Product Description
The Definitive Career-Spanning Collection in a Deluxe 4-CD Set.

The new 4-CD set Walking On A Wire: 1968-2009 covers every phase of Richard Thompson's career, beginning with the trail-blazing folk-rock group Fairport Convention, to his duo albums with then-wife Linda Thompson, as well as his 20-plus years as a critically acclaimed solo artist. The songs chosen for this selection of his box set were carefully assembled and cover a wide range of styles -- rock 'n' roll with folk, jazz, rockabilly and the odd waltz and soundtrack theme thrown in -- the scope of his songwriting, and the sheer virtuosity of his playing. Compiled by Richard Thompson himself, Walking On A Wire includes material from every album he has released. Named one of the Top 20 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone, the British folk-rock legend is one of the world's most critically acclaimed and prolific songwriters. Thompson's songs have been covered by R.E.M., Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Los Lobos, and many others.

It is supposed to come out late this year, and would be more of a traditional career spanning box set. The most recent Thompson box, which came out on the Free Reed label, was called "RT", and was more of a preaching to the choir type of selection.

Just an update on the box...

4-CD BOX SET CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF RICHARD THOMPSON’S MUSIC
TO BE RELEASED BY SHOUT! FACTORY

WALKING ON A WIRE: RICHARD THOMPSON (1968–2009)
IN STORES JUNE 30

[His] “official catalogue … is a long trail of genius” Rolling Stone

Los Angeles, CA – On June 30 Shout! Factory will pay tribute to the legendary Richard Thompson with a career-spanning 4-CD box set, Walking On A Wire: Richard Thompson (1968-2009). Thompson has had an illustrious career that stretches back over 40 years. Songs from every Richard Thompson album are represented on Walking On A Wire, beginning with the trail-blazing folk-rock group Fairport Convention, of which he was a founding member as a teenager, to his duo albums with then-wife Linda Thompson, as well as his 20 plus years as a critically acclaimed solo artist. Thompson will tour the US and UK this spring and summer.

The songs chosen for this selection of his work were carefully assembled and aim to provide a real sense of Richard Thompson, as well as to celebrate the diversity of his music - rock ’n’ roll with folk, jazz, rockabilly and the odd waltz thrown in - the scope of his songwriting, and the sheer virtuosity of his playing. Walking On A Wire impressively includes 71 tracks from albums released by 15 different labels, and includes a 60 page booklet with new notes by Patrick Humphries.

Early on in his career Thompson was singled out as a songwriter of distinction; as a guitarist, he was being compared by critics to more established “guitar heroes” such as Pete Townshend, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. He reached a new level of critical and commercial success in the 80’s and 90’s during his Capitol Records period, during which he recorded what is perhaps his signature song, “1952 Vincent Black Lightning.”

Declared by Rolling Stone as one of the Top 20 Guitarists of all time, the iconic British folk-rock legend is one of the world's most critically acclaimed and prolific songwriters. Thompson’s songs, of which he’s written more than 400, have been covered by R.E.M., Elvis Costello, the Pointer Sisters, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Los Lobos, and many more. Thompson has been received by rock royalty, such as Bruce Springsteen, and Elvis Costello, as well as by real royalty, Queen Elizabeth II. Thompson is also the recipient of an Ivor Novello Award for Songwriting, the Orville Gibson Award for guitarists, and the 2006 BBC Lifetime Achievement Award.

Richard Thompson has carefully chosen his projects over the years, including the score for Werner Herzog’s film Grizzly Man, 2003’s stripped-down The Old Kit Bag, which included the sombre “Gethsemane” and the atmospheric “A Love You Can’t Survive,” and 2007’s Sweet Warrior (Shout! Factory), from which the final three tracks of this collection are taken, and which featured the provocative reflection of the Iraq War “Dad’s Gonna Kill Me,” the ballad “She Sang the Angels to Rest,” and “Needle and Thread,” which recalls prime Fairport. Walking On A Wire: Richard Thompson (1968-2009) finally provides fans a comprehensive collection of Thompson’s work.

At first glance, this seems like a reasonable update of Ryko's Watching The Dark 3-disc set...

Watching The Dark had a wealth of unreleased material. This new set is all previously released stuff. Any RT fan would already have most of this.

I always sort of wonder who the market is for collections like this. It's a decent set, no doubt about that - not precisely the songs I'd have chosen, but while there are always going to be glaring absences, there aren't many songs there whose inclusion I'd vigorously argue against - but as you say, anyone keen enough on RT to spend $60 on a boxset is likely to already have a reasonable majority of this material, and anyone who's yet to be convinced that he's worth that sort of outlay would be better-served by a one- or two-CD "introduction to..." collection, of which there are a couple already out there.

I was happy to buy 'Watching The Dark', even though I already owned a fair bit of the material on there, because there was also lots of stuff which I didn't have already, and which wasn't readily-available elsewhere. I won't be bothering with this new set.

Nothing from Front Parlour Ballads? Who the hell assembled this set?

'Solitary Life', in particular, is very much one of those "glaring absences", for me.

Agree 100% - a box set like this from RT makes no sense. His diehard fans already have this, most are completists.

Yep. And all they had to do was include a dozen or so unreleased songs and us diehards would be drooling.

I know there is a lot of discussion about this box, but I think an artist of RT's caliber deserves this kind of career retrospective.Watching The Dark was a great set, but Richard has made lot of great music since it's release. The Richard fanatics will buy this anyway, because they want everything . A box like this, with so many amazing songs, may just get Richard the recognition he deserves. I bet it was really cheap to put this together, and it might put a few bucks in Richard's pocket. If you are looking for rare and unreleased Richard Thompson I would like to reccomend the RT box on Free Reed. Five discs of unreleased (mostly live) material. My only quibble with the RT box is it leans a little heavier on the acoustic side of Richard's music. It is worth getting just for the amazing electric version of For Shame of Doing Wrong.

But why was Front Parlour Ballads totally ignored when other more obscure albums weren't?

I wish he would do some more copies of the Flypaper CD's for his website.. The prices for the ones I don't have are astounding. One seller on Amazon has the double Two letter Words set for $245.

Unless it's SACD I can't see spending $'s on this. I already have Watching The Dark & most of the catalog, & I really prefer his earlier period.

"The Richard fanatics will buy this anyway, because they want everything "

Why? I already have everything on the set. A disc or so worth of previously unissued material might tempt me.

I think Richard Thompson is one of the most significant recording artists of the last 40 years. But I'm not sure I see the market for this. Too much for the casual buyer but nothing to tempt the hard-core fans who already own it.

I love RT but I have all the songs on this boxset except for 3 songs. I'd rather put my money towards the Beatles remasters! If they were smart this could have been Watching The Dark Part 2. 4 discs. Half previously relelased and half unreleased!.

I just picked this up even though I have all the early Fairport, most of Richard and Linda, and several of his solo albums, plus the previous box. I have to say, it's nicely done. Sure, there are some songs that come to mind immediately that I'd put on there, but if you want it all, you buy everything -- you don't depend on a box set to replace individual albums. I'll listen to it when I want to hear some RT but I'm not sure which album. The art direction is beautiful, and it's nice to see a set this size with full-size jewel cases for a change.
