Might as well ask a quick question while you are on line, Mr. Stern.
John Byrne has consistently credited YOU with making She-Hulk an interesting character. What was it about Jennifer that you most liked and what did you feel needed the most improvement?
There was a story that Dave Kraft wrote toward the end of his run on the first SHE-HULK series -- or maybe it was in an issue of MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE with the Thing -- that made me realize, "Oh, Jen really
likes being the She-Hulk! Nobody can give her any crap when she's big and green."
A month or so later, when Jim Shooter was casting about for "another strong character" to joing the Avengers, I suggested the She-Hulk because of 1) the reasons listed above and 2) one particular obnoxious comics fan. Said fan took umbrage of She-Hulk's very existence, who campaigned loudly and vociferously for her comic's cancellation, and saw said cancellation as a personal moral victory. He was 'way too self-righteous about this, and one of his favorite comics was AVENGERS. (Ain't I a stinker?)
And within just a few months, I wound up writing the AVENGERS, and was able to develop She-Hulk into a real fun-loving California girl...which is what John picked up on.
And now you know...the
rest of the story.
Good day!
