Shout Factory has announced a forthcoming 2-cd 32-track anthology of The Sweet, said to be remastered from the original tapes.

Image

Action: The Sweet Anthology is the first definitive Sweet 2-CD set and contains a whopping 32 tracks, including songs never before available on CD. The collection boasts every U.S. and U.K. charting hit from the 1970s, including "Ballroom Blitz", "Fox On The Run", "Little Willy" and "Love Is Like Oxygen". Sweet combined '70s glam style with guitar-driven tunes that were at the same time irresistibly catchy. They came to prominence with their smash hit "Little Willy" in 1973, and continued to release chart-toppers, properly representing the emerging British glam scene on this side of the pond. They did, however, successfully transition into an album-rock band with the release of Give Us A Wink, which produced the single "Action."

Disc One:
1. Funny Funny
2. You’re Not Wrong For Loving Me
3. Co-Co
4. Alexander Graham Bell
5. Poppa Joe
6. Little Willy
7. Wig-Wam Bam
8. Blockbuster
9. Hell Raiser
10. Ballroom Blitz
11. Teenage Rampage
12. The 6-Teens
13. Rebel Rouser
14. Turn It Down
15. A.C.D.C.
16. Fox On The Run

Disc Two:
1. Action
2. Sweet F.A.
3. The Lies In Your Eyes
4. No You Don’t
5. 4th Of July
6. Lost Angels
7. Funk It Up (David’s Song)
8. Fever Of Love
9. Stairway To The Stars
10. Love Is Like Oxygen (Album Version)
11. Cover Girl
12. California Nights
13. Call Me
14. Big Apple Waltz
15. Give The Lady Some Respect
16. Sixties Man

I think all I ever heard by these guys was "Action" and "Barroom Blitz" but what a pair of hits! Was all their stuff this good?

They had other great hits, including "Fox on The Run" ,"Blockbuster","Love is Like Oxygen" & "Hellraiser" and were the technically most proficient musicians of all the Uk "Glam" acts.

You get 36 tracks on the 2007 import BLOCKBUSTER: THE BEST OF SWEET...which was never expensive as a Music Club release, and is probably cheaper now.

All great songs! I'll add the under-appreciated B-side to "Fox On The Run" - "Burn On The Flame"! It is on that "Blockbuster" 2 CD Music Club import if I remember correctly.

Yeh, it is. Unfortunately "Love Is Like Oxygen" isn't on that comp.

Make that "Ballroom Blitz." :-D

There are a least a zillion Sweet comps on the market, including imports. Beware of those that feature bogus rerecordings. Most of their studio albums have been reissued more than once, with a variety of bonus tracks. As for favorite songs, check out the album track "No You Don't" which rocks hard.

Back in the mid-70s, I bought their first US album, on Bell Records, which was a slapdash comp of UK singles rushed out to capitalize on the success of "Little Willy," but I played it over and over. It was reissued on CD, w/ bonus tracks, by Razor & Tie, and now sells for collectors prices on Amazon.

Thanks for all the info, guys. After reading those titles I remember more of them than I thought. And of course it was Ballroom, not Barroom...

They used Ballroom Blitz on ABC's Life on Mars last night. Hopefully they'll put the full-length version of Oxygen on the new comp.

Steer clear of that disc, which doesn't correctly re-create the original Bell album. The CD uses a live concert version of "Need a Lot of Lovin", because, at the time BMG couldn't find the studio version(a UK B-side). The studio version was subsequently found and is available on several imported CD's.

Here is the info...

TWO-CD SET ACTION: THE SWEET ANTHOLOGY
AVAILABLE ON SHOUT! FACTORY APRIL 28

Definitive Collection Re-mastered From The Original Tapes Features The Hits “Ballroom Blitz,” “Fox On The Run,” “Love Is Like Oxygen,” and Many More!

Sweet Announces New Tour Dates For 2009
Los Angeles, CA – February 17, 2009 - A new two-CD set featuring songs never before available on CD in the U.S., Action: The Sweet Anthology is the definitive Sweet collection. Action features 30 tracks, including every U.S. and UK hit, including the Top 10 U.S. hits “Little Willy (#3),” “Ballroom Blitz (#5),” “Fox On The Run (#5)” and “Love Is Like Oxygen (#8).” This collection was remastered from the original tapes by Bill Inglot.

Sweet is on tour in 2009, having just announced new dates in America and Canada. For more details, go to http://www.thesweetband.com.

Listening to this anthology one is struck by bassist Steve Priest and drummer Mick Tucker’s phenomenal rhythm teamwork, of Andy Scott’s guitar wizardry, and singer Brian Connolly’s passion and vocal power.

“Little Willy” and “Wig-Wam Bam” were among Sweet’s first big hits, with “Little Willy” going Top 10 in the U.S., and marked the inception of what is considered to be the band’s bubblegum period, with memorable hooks, strong melodies and a definitive teen target audience. As the years passed, Sweet’s harmonies, multi-tracked guitar work and layered sound would arguably have an impact on other bands such as Queen, Electric Light Orchestra, and in later decades, Def Leppard.

“Teenage Rampage” continued the band’s winning streak in 1974, a year of transition for Sweet, which found them signing with Capitol Records in the U.S. and moving on from their songwriting team of Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn. Their next album, the gold certified Desolation Boulevard, had monster singles in the million-selling “Fox On The Run,” and “Ballroom Blitz,” both climbing to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Ballroom Blitz” evokes the sights and sounds of its era, affectionately called ‘Glam” – with its requisite sense of fashion, glitter and bombastic anthems. It was a scene ruled by Bowie, Gary Glitter, T-Rex, Slade and Roxy Music, but there was a special place reserved for the Sweet. The single “Fox On The Run” was one of their very best records, and would become one of the biggest Sweet hits, giving the band members the confidence to assume songwriting and production duties permanently.

Sweet’s Give Us A Wink! in 1976 and the following year’s Off The Record were entirely written and produced by the band. One stand out cut from Give Us A Wink, “Action” was a Top 20 hit in the U.S. and U.K., and is a perfect showcase of the group’s musical weaponry. “The Lies In Your Eyes,” “4th Of July,” “Fever Of Love” and “Stairway To The Stars” added lush keyboards and synthesizers to the mix, blending classical flourishes to the heavy rock foundation and creating Sweet’s distinct UK brand of arena rock.

Level Headed (1978) was a largely successful experiment with the kind of power pop prog-rock that ELO, Supertramp and 10cc were known for at the time. It gave them their last worldwide Top 10 single with “Love Is Like Oxygen,” as well as a track that paid homage to their days and nights in the U.S. west coast, “California Nights.”

Connolly departed Sweet after Level Headed. Lead vocals were now delegated to Scott and Priest and keyboardist Gary Moberley was added to the studio sessions. The group released three more albums but went their separate ways in 1982. Later attempts to reunite the original quartet were hampered by Connolly’s health, and the singer passed away in 1997, followed by Mick Tucker’s untimely death just five years later. Steve Priest and Andy Scott have remained active as writers, producers and performers.

If the Sweet name is not as prominent as some of their peers in the rock and pop annals, as their track record suggests it should be, they’ve probably been penalized for the musical twists and turns that makes their story so compelling. With Anthology, we can finally appreciate the richness of the entire Sweet tapestry.

Very good band! Still wear my "Give Us A Wink" tour shirt every now and then.
Wish they could have added "Cockroach" on the comp. This song rocks!
All in all nice set, especially including the "Love is Like Oxygen" album track. I will be getting this.

Since I have all these songs, this comp is about as pointless to me as that band in the current version of Sweet.
Once, someone gave me a CD that had some songs that Brian recorded for Cut About the Rest before his vox were erased and replaced. I'd like to see that get an official release.

Bassist/vocalist Steve Priest's California-based "Sweet" is something that only formed recently. For the 27 years since the disbandment of the 3-piece(Scott/Priest/Tucker) group, it's been guitarist/vocalist Andy Scott's England-based group "Andy Scott's Sweet" that has been the keeper of the "Sweet" flame. Despite the democratically shared 1970's songwriting credits(to split the money equally), Andy Scott was the sole writer of 75% of the group's original songs, including "Fox on The Run". The group's distinctive harmony sound only arrived when he joined the group in 1970(there had been four singles with earlier guitarists Frank Torpey & Mick Stewart, none of them hits)

Seeing this touring version of Sweet would be akin to seeing the current iteration of Badfinger, I expect. Not without its pleasures, but...

The track listing on the CD set looks good, though like Dean, I already have it all.

One of The Sweet's coolest songs "Air On 'A' Tape Loop" is never on these comps. Get Level Headed to hear this great 7:04 minute instrumental.

Although I was first and foremost a Slade fan, Sweet was my first concert experience, back in '76, when they toured "Give us a Wink". I was twelve. Andy Scott's Sweet did release a new CD a few years ago, called "Sweetlife", which got good reviews. I haven't heard it, but I think I own pretty much all of Connolly's Sweet.
