Capitol Expands First Three Radiohead Albums

January 14, 2009 04:12 PM ET
Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Capitol is continuing its repackaging of Radiohead's back catalog with expanded CD/DVD editions of the band's first three albums. "Pablo Honey," "The Bends" and "OK Computer" will be available March 24 as two-CD sets or two-CD/one-DVD versions.

In addition, 12 Radiohead EPs, beginning with 1992's "Drill" EP and concluding with the "2+2=5" single, will come out on vinyl April 21.

"Pablo Honey" is expanded with the aforementioned "Drill" EP, the "Creep" single, and a four-song BBC session from June 1992, among other rarities. The DVD includes four videos, a "Top of the Pops" appearance and nine songs taped in May 1994 at London's Astoria.

"The Bends" is augmented with the classic "My Iron Lung" single, a 1994 BBC session and additional songs from the Astoria concert. "OK Computer" includes a four-song BBC session from 1997 and the singles for "Paranoid Android," "Karma Police" and "No Surprises."

Radiohead left Capitol parent EMI in 2007 after a 15-year relationship, and promptly offered its new album, "In Rainbows," as a name-your-own-price download. The physical version was released by TBD/ATO in early 2008.

Capitol has since repackaged the band's studio albums on vinyl and as a boxed set and released a "Best Of" collection.

Radiohead returns to live duty in March for a short swing of South American shows, with support from Kraftwerk.

Sign me up for all these! It will be nice to finally have the Drill EP on CD without having to sell a major organ.

Yeah, although I was never huge into these guys and I'm sure they'll come out and slam these remasters because they're pretentious boobs, I'd be on board for buying these. The only album I have is "In Rainbows" and I think it's great. Aside from that, only "OK Computer" (which I still feel is way overrated) and "The Bends" were albums I even thought about buying before. But this will give me a chance to go through the whole catalogue and see what I missed. I still like enough material to know I won't be wasting my money-that is, whenever I get money!

And those are the two to get from the early catalogue... Pablo Honey is such a step below that it's sometimes hard to believe it came from the same band.

Wow-here's the content for these-pretty damn jaw-dropping actually. Pretty much everything that should be here visually and audiowise is here. They definitely could've included the full "MTV Live From The 10 Spot" show from New York from 1997 which was somewhere around 90 minutes or so for the "OK Computer" DVD portion-that one is too skimpy, but really, these look excellent all the way. These will be amazing. I'd assume diehard fans are happy, but maybe they're miserable I don't know. Where am I gonna get the money for all these???

If you own the CD singles there is not much new here on the CDs, there are things missing, particularly The Bends era remixes.

Okay, so aside from a few obscure single-country releases with exclusive live tracks, here's what you'd need to supplement the remasters with the relevant tracks highlighted:

Just UK CD1
01. Just
02. [lilred]Planet Telex (Karma Sunra mix)[/lilred]
03. [lilred]Killer Cars (Mogadon version)[/lilred]

Just UK CD2
01. Just
02. [lilred]Bones (live)[/lilred]
03. [lilred]Planet Telex (live)[/lilred]
04. [lilred]Anyone Can Play Guitar (live)[/lilred]

Fake Plastic Trees UK CD2
01. Fake Plastic Trees
02. [lilred]Fake Plastic Trees (acoustic)[/lilred]
03. [lilred]Bullet Proof ..I Wish I Was (acoustic)[/lilred]
04. [lilred]Street Spirit (Fade Out) (acoustic)[/lilred]

UK High And Dry / Planet Telex CD1
01. High And Dry
02. Planet Telex
03. Maquilarora
04. [lilred]Planet Telex (Hexidecimal mix)[/lilred]

UK High And Dry / Planet Telex CD2
01. Planet Telex
02. High And Dry
03. Killer Cars
04. [lilred]Planet Telex (l.f.o. jd mix)[/lilred]

And it looks like the following remixes will remain available only on vinyl:

[lilred]Planet Telex (Hexidecimal dub)
Planet Telex (Osborn mix)
Planet Telex (Mo-wax mix)[/lilred]

But for those who did not bother with CD singles (and there's plenty of people who didn't), and could care less about remixes this is literally everything you would need and then some.

It just feels like a missed opportunity, all we seem to be getting above what has already been previously released are some radio sessions and I’d personally rather have a radio sessions album than have them as bonus tracks when there could be unreleased demos, alt takes or outtakes in their place.

Spin seems to have different listing for The Bends bonus disc implying that the acoustic versions are included:

1. The Trickster
2. Punchdrunk Lovesick Singalong
3. Lozenge Of Love
4. Lewis (Mistreated)
5. Permanent Daylight
6. You Never Wash Up After Yourself (Live)
7. Maquiladora
8. Killer Cars
9. India Rubber
10. How Can You Be Sure
11. Fake Plastic Trees (Acoustic Version)
12. Bullet Proof ... I Wish I Was (Acoustic)
13. Street Spirit (Fade Out) (Acoustic)
14. Talk Show Host
15. Bishop's Robes
16. Banana Co
17. Molasses
18. Just (BBC Radio 1 Evening Session)
19. Maquiladora (BBC Radio 1 Evening Session)
20. Street Spirit (Fade Out) (BBC Radio 1 Evening Session)
21. Bones (BBC Radio 1 Evening Session)

There is also the vinyl only Planet Telex (trashed mix) and several tracks from complations:

Stupid Cars (Tinitus mix)
The Bends (demo)
Nice Dream (demo)
Planet Telex (Depthcharge mix)
Talk Show Host (Black Dog mix)
Talk SHow Host (Nelle Hooper mix)
etc

I'm still on the fence as to Radiohead's "genius", but these releases might help. I do like quite a bit of their stuff, then there's those releases I didn't quite understand like "Kid A". As for the Pixies, that's one band I've never liked despite repeated efforts. But I know there's many who dig them-just not me.

KID A has actually become my favorite Radiohead album. It's a grower, and not as ambitious as "OK Computer" or immediately likable as "The Bends," but it's very, very engaging and varied.

As with many bands, the key to falling in love with Radiohead is seeing them live, I think. I've seen them three times and each time it's been incredible.

I'm really looking forward to these reissues, especially of "The Bends"

If this was on CD and similar to the Massive Attack boxset in that they collected all the stray b-sides together for that single on one CD single (up to 7 tracks) then I would be very interested.

Even the Massive Attack box - cool as it was - failed to collect everything. There were a few tracks from the original vinyl singles that didn't make it onto the CDs.

Came across a couple of Pablo Honey-era stragglers while doing some inventory tonight:

"Creep" (live) - Recorded 03/14/1993 at the Town & Country Club; taken from the "Pop Is Dead" single and also found on the 17-track Japanese CD version of Pablo Honey

"You" (live) - Recorded 06/30/1993 at Metro, Chicago; taken from the "Creep" US Live EP (a UK 12" release) and also found on the Japanese Itch compilation CD

Aside from the bonus material - Bends seemingly the most interesting on that front - how is the remastering of the albums themselves? Anyone A-B?

Bannings: Banned??? Moi???
At J&R this week, I saw only a couple of titles (The Bends and OK Computer, I think), and both were just the 2-CD sets, no DVDs.

I suspect that 'Rama will get them all sooner or later.

For the Pablo Honey reissue, not much. The four promo videos were included on the Best of Radiohead compilation, and the Astoria tracks are all taken from Astoria London Live (in fact, they simply dropped all the Bends songs from the previous DVD). I think the TOTP version of "Creep" is the only new-to-DVD track here.

The Bends follows a similar pattern with the promo videos and the Astoria live tracks. The 2 Meter sessions are a mixed bag - "My Iron Lung", "High And Dry", and "Fake Plastic Trees" are new, but there are no signs of "Anyone Can Play Guitar" or "Bones" from the same recordings (these last two tracks previously appeared with a 2 Meter session "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" on a 1996 European CD single). I think this is the first release of "High And Dry" from the Later taping, but "The Bends" was previously included on one of the Later compilations. Again, the TOTP versions are all likely new to DVD.

Finally, it's OK Computer with the most paltry offering. Again, the promos are previously released, and "Paranoid Android" appeared on a Later compilation DVD. As IP previously mentioned, they could (should?) have easily included at least some of the 10 Spot performances to round out this disc.

Thanks calijawn for the info....from what you say, and given that I don't like non-jewel case sized packaging, I might just stick to the 2-CD versions....
