Why does Marvel produce toys like this? Isn't Doom's face one of those things best left to a kid's imagination?

It's so unneccessary - and it removes the possibility that it's just a scratch.

Does Spidey's mask come off, or is it the feature only on the toys where it spoils the surprise?

I had a few articulated 'action figures' when I was a Kid: Captain Action, GI-Joe, Matt Mason, Batman, Superman.

I remember thinking how cool it was that things would 'come off' the action figures: grenades, helmets, boots, guns, belts, masks, etc.

I actually played with my action figures and created adventures around them, sometimes in imitation of stories I'd read in comics. For example, I would re-enact World Finest tales where Batman and Superman switched costumes.

Later when I got older and just collected action figures, I noted what a shame it was that Batman could no longer be turned into Bruce Wayne because the mask was the head.

All that being said, I think -- as a kid -- I would have appreciated a Dr. Doom with a removable mask. Doom and I would have been the 'only guys to know'. And this face is no scarier then Vincent Price's in house of wax which I'd seen by the time I was six.

This reminds me of the disappointment of seeing Snake-Eyes' face in the G.I.Joe comic.

That is the second worst case of sleep creases I have ever seen.

My kid has that Doom toy. He's not at all traumatized by it. Kids like gross villians.

I just checked the Doom figure I've got - its face just has the scratch (I've never actually taken the face plate off before, so I didn't know what it looked like)

All in all, I think I prefer the version I've got.

Which leads me to another Doom question (and no it isn't the one about 'if he dropped outta university, how can he call himself 'Doctor'):

If he is always firing energy blasts from his gauntlets and stuff, why does he carry a gun around? Anybody ever actually see him pull out this gun and use it?

I just pulled it out of the figure, and it is this cool little broomhandle (a luger or a Mauser, I forget which). But I can never recall Doom actually brandishing it...

I remember Doom firing his gun a few times in the course of the Kirby/Lee run. I don't recall whether this was before or after his gloves became energy weapons.

The gun seems more of a Kirby militaristic design element. Kinda like Darkseid's thigh boots.

At any rate, Dr. Doom must have one of the worst cases of bad peripeheral vision in comic book history: he has to deal with seeing through a thick mask AND a hood.

Byrne had the right take on his face, showing in the flashback that the explosion in scholl left him with one scar, not that bad at all as this was an idea Kirby had long ago. To Doom's ego and vanity, he was at that point a hideous freak. He then went to Tibet and had the monks make him his armor and then he made them put the still-glowing-red-hot metal mask on his face and sealed the deal and you get pretty much what the toy shows. But Linda's right, the toy SHOULDN'T being showing anything of the kind. It's just one symptom of what's VERY wrong with the industry today.
Myself, I do get the Legends figures of the characters I like and I'll tell you what I did here. I got the Doom figure with the mask off. I then took the mask and super-glued the sonuvva bitch to his face! done and done.

Kirby said it was just a scratch. I guess the creator got it wrong again.

It made sense for it to have been just a scar right after his accident, but I don't think his face would have remained undamaged after Doom insisted that the monks place the mask on him before it cooled. And that was first depicted in a story that Kirby drew!! However, I doubt it would have been that horrible mess depicted on the toy.

Never read JB's FF run, what did he do?

He finished up online at University of Phoenix. He heard that Larry Fitzgerald was doing the same while watching a football game. Victor's a big Dallas Cowboys fan.

Wolverine was much more interesting to me when his past was left sketchy and vague.

They needed to kill him off before they gave too much away. That trick worked for Darth Maul and Boba Fett.

Darth Maul was the only cool thing in Phantom. HE should have been cloned for the "Clone Wars."
