I guess it was confirmed this weekend that Peter Cullen (the original voice of Optimus Prime) will voice the character in the upcoming movie. Despite the movie Prime's truck form not being COE (cab over engine) like in the original cartoon and comic book, this has definitely earned my ticket. (Trivia I didn't know: the original Takara character was called "Convoy." It was none other than Denny O'Neal who gave him the American version name of "Optimus Prime.")
The video below is an example of what the character might have looked like had they stuck strictly to the character's International Semi configuration...

The fact that Peter Cullen is going to be lending his voice to this pic has insured that I will be there opening weekend. Here's hoping the movie itself doesn't suck the big one.

And admittedly, it's a big strike. But the Cullen casting goes a long way towards earning some goodwill from me (and I'm guessing many others).

Well, I liked "Armageddon." So I'm not discouraged. Though the guy I would have really liked to have seen direct this is still James Cameron.

I'm hoping that they will use the old fashioned "Wakka Wakka" sound effect when they transform.

I've already heard that the movie Bumblebee is a Camaro... which is stupid. Bumblebee was an old fashioned school bus yellow Volkeswagon bug. They could have at least gone with the new VW Beetle... unless VW had some sort of problem with that.

Ihave heard that VW does have a problem. Apparently they don't want to be associated in any way with something that could be deemed violent especially since the Bug is back on the market. I think because it had been out of production for so long when the Transformers originally came out is how they were able to get away with it.

VW does not want itself associated with "war toys" anymore. Maybe because of their past, I don't know. They won't allow it in the movie or future toys from what I heard. This may be due to the Holocaust lawsuit in 2002
Bumblebee in a newer line of toys has already been other cars.
"When the Alternators/Binaltech line of hyper-realistic Transformers was being developed, fan favorite Bumblebee was to be recreated as a New Beetle. Volkswagen refused to license the car, however, supposedly due to the warlike nature of the Transformers." http://www.spencer1984.com/my_models/bumblebee.php
alledgedly a picture of Bumblebee as car, and semi-transformed but i don't know if it is true. looks cool though http://forums.vr-zone.com/showthread.php?p=2103371

They're going to miss out on a lot of free publicity. Can you imagine a VW commercial with one of the new bugs transforming?
Rob, what was this Holocaust lawsuit about?

Quote: Nazi-Era Suit at Car Maker Print Save Published: May 6, 1999 Lawyers who say they are representing Russian and Polish slave laborers during World War II filed a class-action lawsuit today against Volkswagen, seeking reparation for the deaths of up to 400 children.
The lawsuit, filed in Federal court here, said the children, who were put in a nursery while their parents were forced to work at a Volkswagen plant, died from maltreatment.
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9404E5DC103CF935A35756C0A96F958260 Quote: Volkswagen A.G. has reversed itself and agreed to set up a fund to compensate workers forced into slave labor in World War II.
It said that its decision was ''in recognition of the historical and moral obligations'' to those who were forced to work in its factories under the Third Reich. The company has been threatened with a lawsuit over the issue. Company executives had insisted that compensating victims was a Government responsibility.
Volkswagen employed 15,000 slave laborers in the war, a history financed by the company showed.
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9A07E1DB113EF93BA35754C0A96E958260 Quote: During 1998-AUG, a number of other U.S. lawsuits were launched by survivors against a variety of German companies, including Audi, BMW, Daimler-Benz, Siemens, Leica Camera and Volkswagen. The matter came to a head in 1998 when the largest bank in Germany, Deutsche Bank, made a bid of $15 billion U.S. to take over Banker's Trust in New York. New York state authorities threatened to block the takeover unless the slavery compensation issue was satisfactorily resolved.
For years, Chancellor Helmut Kohl had maintained that Germany companies which used slave labor should not have to compensate their victims. This was because the companies were merely following Nazi government orders that they employ slave labor. That argument is similar to one raised at the Nuremberg trials shortly after Word War II: that an officer was is not responsible for mass murder because he was simply following the orders of his superior officers. The court rejected that line of reasoning.

People thought Fagan was crazy when he filed against Volkswagen and Deutsche Bank, argues Anthony J. Sebok, a law professor at Brooklyn Law School. But Fagan's strategy worked ......The Nazi case was brought on behalf of all living survivors of German slave labor. ....The Nazi-Holocaust cases, lawyers note, were legally weak but very damaging to the reputations of German corporations. The result? The companies settled without going to court for more than $8-billion, at the urging of the U.S. government, which helped mediate.

been an inspiration for efforts seeking slavery reparations in this country-if not from the US Government, then from US companies.

Sweet. Ok, I had read on IMDB.com that Bumblebee was going to be a '78 Camaro. I'm not a Camaro man, myself, so was a bit diappointed. But if that pic of the new Camaro that Rob posted is true, then, cool, that really is a nice looking car.
And well, with VW, let them take their toys and go home. Spoil-sports.

The "oh shit" is in the DVD from Rhino. As is Ultra Magnus' muttering "Open, Dammit, open" to the Matrix.

The "open dammit, open" was in the original VHS release too. But I didn't know about the "oh shit, what're we gonna do now" until years later when I bought a Canadian bootleg of the film for a friend... which had been gleened from a laser disc.

My friends and I talked about it alot afte the movie. "Spike said 'Shit'". Ultra Magnus said 'Dammit!'" I think it was the first time that any of us had heard cartoon characters swear. Hearing cartoon characters swear still always jars me. I don't think that I like it.
I wasn't overly oppsed to it, but I didn't think that Dean needed to say 'hell" or the General needed to say "Dammit" in the Iron Giant. There were some complaints on the over those.
