Fatboy Slim is no more

May 14, 2008

Fatboy Slim, aka DJ Norman Cook, has decided to retire his famous moniker.

The DJ was cagey about explaining why he had made the decision, or what his new stage name will be. However, NME.COM has learned that he is working on a new album under the name Brighton Port Authority.

Cook told The Sun: "Yes, I am ditching the Fatboy Slim name, but I can’t tell you the new one. I’m going to take the Fifth Amendment on that question and not say because I'll get myself into trouble.”

Despite refusing to confirm his new title the DJ did, however, joke that he was changing his name to "Madonna".

Fatboy Slim is still billed to play Glastonbury and headline the O2 Wireless Festival on July 5 in London, suggesting the DJ may use the shows to say goodbye to his old stage name.

The legendary forgotten sessions of The Brighton Port Authority were recently uncovered much to the surprise of The Chairman of The BPA, Norman Cook and his long standing studio partner Simon Thornton.

The tapes had been sitting in a disused warehouse space and discovered as the building was to be knocked down. This is genre bending music that was ahead of it's time and features collaborations with Iggy Pop, David Byrne, Jamie T, Martha Wainwright and Dizzee Rascal, amongst many others creating nothing short of a historic masterpiece.

Fatboy Slim project featuring David Byrne, Iggy Pop announce US album release

Nov 10, 2008

Fatboy Slim's Norman Cook, Talking Heads' David Byrne, Iggy Pop and Dizzee Rascal have collaborated on a project dubbed the Brighton Port Authority (BPA), and will release a debut album in the US this winter.

BPA's debut is titled ‘I Think We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat’, and is due out in the US on February 3, 2009.

Also collaborating on the project are Martha Wainwright, Jamie T, Jack Penate and Emmy The Great, among others.

The first single, 'Big Toe', featuring Dizzee Rascal, was released earlier this year, as previously reported.

Strange. "Big Toe" was the original name for the track, but was renamed "Toe Jam" for release. A release which happened months before this article came out, and was all over the web. The NME didn't know the name of one of the biggest viral videos of the summer?

Bump: pre-order details have been posted at Amazon (see first post), and the album is showing as an Amazon Exclusive with a release date one month sooner than what had been previously announced. Whether this means the early release is what's exclusive to Amazon, or if it means they're the only outlet which will be carrying this album at all in the USA, I don't yet know.

The answer is the former -- Amazon will be the exclusive stockist of the BPA album in America for the entire month of January. It will go into general release at the beginning of February.
