...is being officially announced as of 5:30 PM, January 3rd. It's also indicated that Tennant will regenerate in his final special on New Years 2010, coming a week after the 2009 Xmas special.

I'm on board. I will miss Tennant, but, hey, it will be nice to see what someone else brings to the role.

Hoping desperately for Chiwetel Ejiofor...but really, I'd be OK with anyone except Alan Davies, Jennifer Saunders or James Nesbitt.

That would be interesting!

I obviously don't suffer from Tate Hate.

I'd still love to see Hugh Laurie in the role. That being said, we'll see if that one dude truly is the one as the rumors say (name escapes me).

A few weeks ago Patterson Joseph was the front-runner.

I'm wondering what familiar faces we'll see when it comes time for him to regenerate? My guess would be either Martha, Jack, Sarah or maybe, just maybe Mickey. Possible Jenny, I think that was the Doctor's daughter's name.

26-year-old actor Matt Smith has been cast as the Eleventh Doctor, as revealed in today's special broadcast of Doctor Who Confidential on BBC One. Smith will succeed David Tennant in the role for the fifth series, which begins filming this summer and will air in 2010.

Smith has appeared in various television productions, including alongside Billie Piper in the BBC's adaptations of the Philip Pullman novels The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North. He co-starred in the drama series Party Animals, and on stage was in Alan Bennett's acclaimed play The History Boys.

Smith was born and bred in Northampton, England, and later attended the University of East Anglia in Norwich. He is the youngest actor ever to have been cast as the Doctor in the TV series.

Never heard of him.

Kind of disappointed as I expected someone in his 40's. This kind of really goes against things Moffatt has said in the past....

Oh, I hope they are not going for the 'tween market. That would be awful!

In Moffat I trust. Plus, I'd never heard of Tennant prior to his taking over, and I couldn't stand him for the first few episodes, so I'll withhold judgment.

No, I trust Moffatt too. And over the years, I'd never heard of any of the actors picked for Doctor Who before at the time. I think my biggest reservation is the age. It's a different era but I can't help but remember Davisons' casting and many folks, including Davison himself thinking he was too young for the role at the time.

Ah, Tennant would have been able to pass for 26 himself for that matter and he did brilliantly. But god help us all....Rich Johnston...was wrong.....oh there be no sense to anything anymore...

anyway, it's like a new haircut. give it 3 days and I'll be used to Matt.

Never heard of him. Saw a picture, and he seems like a kid to me.
But then, I'm just turning into an old fart.

There are three more specials, plus the 2009 XMas special with Tennant, then it's going back to the regular series with Smith.

Sounded like they were going to begin shooting the series this summer with Smith.

They're doing a series of specials with Tennant, then the series returns in 2010.

He's got a long neck. He looks more like Ralph Dibny.

I will be glad to see a return to a series.
