Jaden Smith To Star In "Karate Kid" Remake

Variety reports:

Columbia Pictures is back in the dojo with a new version of the 1984 hit "The Karate Kid," which has been refashioned as a star vehicle for Jaden Smith.

The film will be produced by Jerry Weintraub (who launched the original franchise) and Overbrook Entertainment's James Lassiter, Will Smith and Ken Stovitz. Will Smith, who is the 10-year-old actor's father, co-starred alongside Jaden in his feature debut, "The Pursuit of Happyness," which Overbrook and Escape Artists produced for Columbia.

The script is being written by Chris Murphy, and the film will shoot next year in Beijing and other cities. While the new film will be set in that exotic locale, it will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.

China Film Group Corp. will co-produce in China.

The younger Smith, who next stars in "The Day the Earth Stood Still," is a martial arts practitioner.

Smith has three children: son Trey for a first marriage and daughter Willow and Jaden with wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

Jaden, who turned 10 in July, wore his sunglasses at night this summer at premiere for "Kit Kittredge" and at "Hancock."

With sister Willow at "Hancock":

I pronounce this movie henceforth cannot be mentioned on this forum

I just read that Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are in the planning stages to remake OLDBOY.If you've seen the original you know there is no way Spielberg and Smith would keep the twist ending.

Will Will Smith really eat a live octopus, in the name of art?

When did Karate Kid become a sacred cow?

It's a B movie that's been watered down with bad sequels.

It's not like they're remaking Red Dawn.

My first thought on seeing the subject line was "Isn't Will Smith way too old for that by now?"

I think Lucy Liu should portray Ms. Miyagi - they're going to revamp the story for the MILF audience. ;)

Also, the whole "wax on, wax off" thing would take on a new meaning. :)

I just saw the Karate Kid yesterday, actually. Both 1 and 2. I liked 2 better. I think it's an ok series, but I think it would be a mistake to remake it. :o

Why not just come up with a new story about a young karate teenager and write a whole new script? Make it fun , intense and interesting. Remakes often don't work and aren't as good as the originals... it seems like a mistake to me to redo these movies. :ohno:

My wife likes 2 better also

3 isn't great, it kinda stinks, but it has some decent moments.

Macchio gettinga little old though

The Next Karate kid-no good. It has a girl in it though. You may like it for that.

Your wife has good taste in movies, Rob. :ohyes: :D

I think seeing the first 2 is enough for me. As for the remake, I'll look at the previews and wait and see if people think it's any good. If it is, I'll watch it online. :ohyes:
