I assume this is the same as last year's Sony UK release.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000EOUSJU/?tag=imwan-20

Assuming this label (that I've never heard of) doesn't f up the mastering, I would highly recommend it. I own & recommend the Sony UK edition. I've always felt that other then Luther Grosvenor's LAME cartoonish guitar playing, this album is every bit as good as Dudes & Mott.

One of my Rock & Roll fantasies would be to hear this album with either Mick Ralphs or Mick Ronson on guitar.

Iconoclassic Records is a new reissue label that debuted earlier this year with two expaned Laura Nyro reissues, and has since released two Isley Brothers reissues. "The Hoople" is the label's fifth release. Please visit http://www.iconoclassicrecords.com to learn more about the label and our approach to reissues.

The Iconoclassic release of "The Hoople" features the same 7 bonus tracks and mastering as the UK remaster from last year. The main body of the album is mastered by Ray Staff and the bonus tracks are mastered by Vic Anesini. Artwise, Iconoclassic has commissioned a new 12 page full color booklet, reproducing all elements from the original U.S. LP which had a slightly different sleeve and insert than the UK LP, as well as liner notes and memorabilia images. Mott/Hunter authority Campbell Devine has been involved in this reissue.

An album page for "The Hoople" including soundclips and images of the full packaging will be added to our website in due course.

The original 45 version of "Roll Away the Stone" features Mick Ralphs. Mott replaced Mick with "Ariel Bender" for the album track. Give it a listen someday and see if you can tell the difference. I wish they would have included this 45 as a bonus track! I already have the UK version, and it's a keeper.

I believe that version is on the CBS/Sony greatest hits. I do prefer the Ralphs & can definitely tell them apart. The girl's voice is also different..

BTW, love your avatar & signature!

Yeah, I seem to like the 45 version much more now. I think the mix is less "oppressive" - there's breathing room to hear the instuments separately and clearly. I like Mick's fuller tone compared to Ariel's "squeal". I even like the girl's lower pitched voice on 45. You can hear the saxes much more clearly at the end too. I'm glad that I have the old "Greatest Hits", but I wish it was sonically equal to the remastered "Hoople"! Including the 45 seems like such a given - why do they always neglect the obvious?

Are you aware that they did a remaster of GH with the other CBS issues last year? I'd have to physically go through my collection, but I'm pretty sure I've also got the original MR version on either the box or one of the 2 cd comps.

Hi! I worked on the reissue and also love the single version of "Roll..." . However, in order to secure the US release we could not alter the track listing. The version you refer to is indeed already available in the "Greatest Hits" package.

In addition some would argue that the "RATS" single version should appear on the "Mott" reissue for optimum historical accuracy.

I once asked Ian if he would consider having Ralphs redo all of Grosvenor's guitar parts & remix/reissue "The Hoople". Not surprisingly, he said no.

TH is one of the few classic albums I would LOVE to see redone like that, though.

I think it would be really a waste of time for Mick to redo "Ariel's" guitar parts. What they needed was to have Mick on board during the album writing and have him WRITE the guitar parts (and play them too).

I love MTH but I think that this is their weakest album, all down to "Ariel", not so much his playing (what little there actually is), but because he couldn't write a guitar lick/solo worth a damn, and because of the absence of any decent guitar ideas by "Ariel", they amped up the keyboards and horns to cover the guitar deficiencies and made this (IMO) dreadful mess of an album - Ian (or someone else in the group?) talks about this either in the MOTT book or the new album liner notes (I forget where I read it) and says something to that effect.

I agree regarding AB sucks (the word that's always come to mind for me in describing his guitar playing is cartoonish), but imo the song writing is on par with Dudes & Mott.

I just hate the overall feel of the album, the overblown horns, keyboards, background singers etc, that I can't get into the songs, as much as I've tried. I distinctly remember when the album came out and was first listening to it I was like "what is this shit??" and "how can this be the same band that released the brilliant ATYD and MOTT????", it just never worked for me.

For years I wondered why they went in such a non-guitar direction on that album (regardless of who the guitar player was) then like 30 years later I read the quotes about Ariel and his guitar writing deficiencies and I finally understood why the album is the way it is (and why I hate it so much).

A shame Mick left when he did because I think THE HOOPLE could've been a great album if he was still around to contribute to it, although I love Bad Co. too & if he didn't leave Mott then I guess I wouldn't have the great early Bad Co. albums to enjoy. So maybe it all evens out in the end - Mott goes into the crapper but I get Bad Co. + Ian Hunter's solo career.

All that being said I know some people love THE HOOPLE and more power to any of you. It's a MTH album I love to hate though.

Funny you say that, I almost mentioned the Ronson connection but stopped because I felt I rambled on too much. Ronson seemed like the perfect fit for that band, guitar playing, writing, arranging. Sucks that whatever the circumstances were that they got Ariel instead of him, and that the band fell apart after they finally DID get Ronson, and didn't have much of a chance to do anything with him (isn't on maybe one single though?). The MOTT book goes into things but I don't recall the details.
