Let's face it, wrestling figures were always garbage. Whether it was those lame bendy figures or other half-hearted attempts to bring your favorite wrestlers to life, the 1980s stunk for wrestling toys. Masters of the Universe figures were not garbage. They were actually kind of cool (but don't tell my little brother that, 'cause they were his, therefore I am too old for them). These guys were guilt like real wrestlers! So I used them as wrestling figures. But more important than that is that Masters of the Universe had some great potential. I mean, what WAS its deal? It was a sort of fantasy world with science fiction elements and a dude with a skull face built like Hulk Hogan and some REALLY REALLY AWESOME BAD GUYS and a DUDE WITH A GIANT SWORD WHO DRIVES A BIG ASS FIGHTING TIGER CAT THING CREATURE. Awesome. I don't know why the cartoon was so lame, because the toys were kewl. My brother had Castle Grayskull AND Skull Mountain or whatever it was called. They were so rad. And there were some neat vehicles and the different characters got crazy before they got bad. The three-face guy was cool. Man-At-Arms had tons of cool weapons and there was a bad guy with a giant suction cup face and HORDAK who was like Skeletor only he'd kill your goddamn family if he had to and the dude with the giant claw hand that you could put other weapons on but the BEST was TRICLOPS. YES!! TRICLOPS. Anyway, Masters of the Universe could have been really cool, but it wasn't. I'd like to see Alan Moore write a MotU graphic novel.

Never heard of them. And I don't watch wrestling, cause that's a guy thing. I do however like kitty cats. *** Meow ***

He-Man started out as a Conan action figure until the toy company actually watched the Milius movie.

Panthor was an awesome villain for Battle Cat, but the purple felt rubbed completely off the longer you played with it.
Trap Jaw was the awesomest. Replaceable cybernetic weapons limb, zip line for the helmet, a trap freakin' jaw....that figure had it all.
Man-E-Faces was a better character than a toy.
Fisto....simpler times.

I had most of those figs. I liked them a lot. Not very articulated, but great muscle detail.

IIRC the toy was designed and produced before the idea for the cartoon came out. If you read the small booklet that came with your He-Man action figure, you would have some background on him that was not in harmony with the cartoon.

He never used the shield or the axe in the cartoon. There wasn't a Sorceress until the cartoon came along, either. And then there's Orko. Friggin' Orko.

My favorites as a kid were GI Joes' because they had many joints allowing me to make the figures do waht I wanted, which were wrestling moves from TV. Also, they fit better in my hands.

The original plot to He-Man was that he lived in a post-apocolyptic nuclear war of an advanced planet, reducing the world to its primitive state with some of the technology still being around.

The original plot-- Quote: All of the original action figures came with minicomics that told stories involving the characters. In the earliest comics, He-Man is a wandering barbarian on Eternia, a world dealing with the aftermath of a Great War that has devastated the civilizations that once reigned, but has left behind fantastical machinery and weapons. The events of the Great War opened a rift between dimensions, which allows the evil warlord Skeletor to travel to Eternia, and he has now set his sights on the ancient Castle Grayskull, the 'fortress of mystery and power'. Whoever attains control of Grayskull will gain the power to become Master of the Universe. To prevent Skeletor from achieving his goal, He-Man has been given special powers and weapons by The Sorceress (referred to as 'The Goddess' in early stories, except in her debut appearance in whiich she is shown, the one and only time, to have green skin) and sets out to defend the castle from Skeletor. He-Man is supported by several heroic allies, such as Man-At-Arms, the Eternian master of weapons, and Teela, the adopted daughter of Man-At-Arms. Skeletor manages to find one half of the Power Sword, a great weapon which is itself the key to Castle Grayskull. He-Man has been given the other half by The Sorceress, and must prevent Skeletor from linking the two halves to gain access to the castle. To distinguish them from the TV cartoon-influenced minicomics that were released to tie-in with the TV series, this first version of Eternia has been dubbed 'Mini-eternia' or Mineternia. And Conan-- Quote: There is an enduring urban legend about the so-called "Conan toy line". The story is that the Mattel Toy Company originally intended to base an action figure line on Conan the Barbarian, the pulp fantasy character created by Robert E. Howard which at the time was the lead in several popular series produced by Marvel Comics and due to be the subject of a major movie. However, after viewing the film, the Mattel executives despaired at the thought of promoting a children's toy with ties to a film featuring such graphic sex and violence. Thus they gave their doll blonde hair and re-dubbed him "He-Man". The legend is unverified but persistent, and most likely false since the first He-Man action figures were produced in 1981, a year before the first Conan film. Roger Sweet, the originator of He-Man, asserts that the He-Man/Masters Of The Universe concept definitely was not an outgrowth of Conan. The He-Man concept, later renamed the Masters Of The Universe, was originated and developed by Roger Sweet in late 1980. Later, that initial concept was followed by the original comics by Donald F. Glut. The Conan license had been dropped by Mattel months before the He-Man concept was begun. At that time, the barbarian fantasy theme, later applied to the He-Man/Masters concept and line, was broadly visible notably in Frank Frazetta and Boris Vallejo barbarian fantasy art - not specifically from Conan.

I think the original tv commercial for the toy went something like this:
"Who's the man with the power in his hands? It's he-man; the most powerful man in the universe"

While I knew the toys existed, I knew He-Man and company entirely from the cartoons. That awful Filmation animation! I don't see how Hanna-Barbera can catch so much criticism for the quality of their cartoons when Filmation was out there. Even when I was a child (well before He-Man came out) I remember noticing the inferior quality of the Filmation cartoons. Watch any two or three episodes of a typical Filmation series and you will have seen almost all of the types of movement and heard all of the sound effects and music cues for not only that series but any other series that Filmation made around that time.
