That's probably not the accepted term, but hopefully you know what I mean.

Sometimes when I run I like to listen to these songs. I have a few on my running playlist now: Die MF Die/Dope; Crazy Bitch/Buckcherry; Indestructible/Disturbed. I would like to build an hour long or so playlist of similar songs.

Any suggestions on where to start?

You should be listening to age-appropriate music...like Barry Manilow.

I can't help it. It's a reflex action.

I guess there's no truth the rumor then that Barry Manilow's next album is going to be titled Manilow Does Metallica.

I thought Smiff thought Manilow was just an interloping whippersnapper, and that he yearned for the days of Scott Joplin.

Anyway, I like Dethklok - Hatredcopter, Birthday Dethday, Awaken, Thunderhorse, Bloodrocuted and Face Fisted from the first album are uptempo. I Ejaculate Fire and Crush The Industry from the third album come to mind.

Mastodon has the heavy, but not always the tempo. Meshuggah is a bit mathmetal, so I don't know if that would work for you. I like Nightmare from Avenged Sevenfold, and Crying Like A Bitch from Godsmack. Some Rob Zombie might be good, too - Thunderkiss '65, Educated Horses (more upper midtempo).

If you like Dave Grohl, you should check out his metal project Probot.

Buckcherry has a song called Lit or Lit Up that's pretty decent. Korn also has some fast-paced hard stuff, like Right Now, Blind and Falling Away From Me. A couple of fast-paced Wolfmother songs I like are Woman, Sundial, Joker & the Thief, and 10,000 Feet. Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave both have awesome stuff... from Rage, get Calm Like a Bomb, Wake Up, and Bulls on Parade. Audioslave, get Revelations, Cochise and Original Fire.

Uh... what else?

Smashing Pumpkins have some fast-paced stuff like Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Quiet, and Everlasting Gaze. Soundgarden has some awesome stuff, try Spoonman, Superunknown and My Wave. Alice in Chains, try We Die Young, Would?, and Again.

And obviously, there's Metallica. Based on the songs you listed, it seems like you're into harder alternative than true metal... if you want something more poppy, go with I Disappear, Fuel and Wherever I May Roam. If you're looking for real metal, go with Master of Puppets, Seek and Destroy, and For Whom the Bell Tolls.

BYOB and Chop Suey! by System of a Down
Bat Country and Beast and the Harlot by Avenged Sevenfold
Psychosocial by Sipknot
Die, All Right! and Hate to Say I Told You So by The Hives
Dead! by My Chemical Romance
The Kill by 30 Seconds to Mars
Megalomaniac by Incubus

True but I'm not nutty enough to say The Hives are metal...

To piggyback some of Steve's bands, get Anna Molly and Pardon Me from Incubus and I'm Not Okay and This is How I Dissappear from My Chemical Romance.

Thanks for all of these tips everyone.

James, how do you separate heavy alt from metal? Which of these bands would you consider heavy alt? Thanks again.

My collection is probably about 75% metal but I really don't listen to much of what you describe as contempory. But this is something that may appeal to you:

I have been singing the praises of Phoenix on here for years-but they're a French Alt Rock/Pop band not Metal!

A French band that does Death Metal pretty good is Gojira who are popular and have a cool name.

I despise most modern Metal.

Smiff:
I would check out this new Hard Rock band...

Rival Sons (oh boy are these guys great if you dig Zep and early 70s Hard Rock and their new album is great). Singer is amazing.

Here's one that's new but sounds like Iron Maiden or something:
