Description
Twenty years after its original proposed release, David Bowie's 2001 album Toy, which was never officially released, will be made available on Jan. 7.

After his performance at the 2000 Glastonbury Festival, Bowie returned to the studio with his band to record reworked versions of songs he first recorded between 1964-71. At the time, the idea was to record the tracks live, choose the best takes and release a "surprise" album as quickly as possible — a promotional concept that, like many things Bowie did, was several years ahead of its time.

After some disputes between Bowie and his label, the album, Toy, was subsequently shelved, though bootleg copies leaked online in 2011.

In addition to the full Toy album, the set also includes a second CD of alternate mixes and versions, including proposed B-sides, later mixes by Tony Visconti and more. A third CD features Unplugged & Somewhat Slightly Electric mixes of 13 Toy tracks.

That cover is truly disturbing! :-) When I play it, I'll have to keep it face down!!

Although some of these songs were eventually released, this is a scrapped album. Not sure how many more of these are really going to come, as I don't think he has a vault like Prince.

I suspect we're going to see every note DB recorded released soon. The estate seems to like money. There is still at least some Hunky Dory era (Arnold Corns) & Ziggy era (BBC sessions) unreleased. I would like to see official releases of both. And the copyright is running out soon on the early 70's unreleased Glastonbury show. And there's got to be stuff we don't know about. I do feel like the upcoming 90's box is mostly a cash grab.

I'm very glad a lossless Toy is coming out, but 3 cd's??!! That seems like a bit of overkill in the name of $'s.

That is a really unnerving cover. Yikes.

I don't love the cover, but I am excited for the box. Worth noting that the 2011 MP3 leak of Toy turns out not to have been the final album, missing "Karma Man" and "Can't Help Thinking About Me" (which have never circulated) and adding early versions of 2 songs ultimately destined for Heathen.

I predict slash hope the Heathen alternates will appear on the next box in that context.

I'd hope for that too, but in general these boxes haven't featured alternate mixes/outtakes unless (1) they were released at the time the album was released (remixes, or the demos from Hours, for example) or (2) they are part of the central "box bait", like The Gouster or the expanded Stage or Toy. So, it's possible, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Since they finally did higher than cd res (lol) for BA, I am looking forward to this. Other than any unreleased pro recorded RCA era material I'm not aware of & some sort of a Tin Machine set with unreleased material, I feel like my collection is pretty complete after Toy.

Is all of this material found on the Brilliant Adventures box that was released this week, or were they good strategists and left some exclusive so completists have to buy both? I suspect the latter. It's very hard to sort through all the music from listings as you never know if the version/mix is titled correctly. I am not always sure the labels even know what they are releasing.

No, there are only 12 Toy tracks on BA (CD one on BA). + Marl Platti did new acoustic remixes on top of the alternates they already had (CD 3).

Even the mp3 boot had 14 tracks; + 2 more not on BA were released as cd single b sides for Heathen and/or Reality (I'm too tired to remember which!).

The version of Toy in the BA box doesn't include "Liza Jane" or "In the Heat of the Morning" in the tracklist (but still clocks in at 50 minutes). The Toy box also adds a slew of alternative mixes - likely including all of the b-side mixes from the early 2000s, plus others - as well as the semi-acoustic take on (most) of the LP tracks on CD3.

Quick question about these tracks:

I recently received the the single-disc version of "Toy" as found on the "Brilliant Adventure" box, which is reportedly identical to Disc One of the forthcoming standalone release.

Of the twelve songs on the single disc, many have apparently been previously released. According to Wikipedia, "Between 2002 and 2003, tracks from Toy, including 'Conversation Piece', 'Shadow Man', "'You've Got a Habit of Leaving' and 'Baby Loves that Way', appeared as various B-sides and bonus tracks....'Let Me Sleep Beside You' and 'Your Turn to Drive' later saw official release on the three-disc edition of the 2014 compilation Nothing Has Changed."

This is a good starting point, I suppose. What I'm trying to determine is (a) exactly which songs of these songs were, in fact, previously released, (b) where did they appear (i.e., the title of the album or single), and (c) when did they appear (as in an approximate month and year of initial release).

Although these Bowie boxes have generally provided reasonably decent discography information, they are difficult to read, and the liner notes for the mini-sleeve version of "Toy," if not illegible, consist of tiny white print (some of it in a handwritten font) against a light grey background. However, my attempts to enlarge the print using a cellphone camera seem to indicate that the release information I'm seeking is not included.

Could somebody PLEASE provide some sort of quick overview of the release history of these twelve songs?

There's a pretty good breakdown on the Toy Wikipedia page.

Sure... to the best of my knowledge:

1. "I Dig Everything" - previously unreleased, but leaked in 2011 - not sure if the mix is identical or not

2. "You've Got a Habit of Leaving" - released in a different mix as a b-side on the "Slow Burn" and some versions of the "Everything Says 'Hi'" CD singles in 2002 - details at http://www.illustrated-db-discography.nl/cdsingle/cdsingle5.htm

3. "The London Boys" - previously unreleased, but two excerpts were streamed on BowieNet back in 2002 as part of a promotion, and the full track was leaked in 2011 (again, not sure if the mix was the same)

4. "Karma Man" - previously unreleased, never leaked

5. "Conversation Piece" - released on the 2CD version of Heathen in 2002, and I believe in the same mix

6. "Shadow Man" - released in a different mix (with strings!) as a b-side on the "Slow Burn" and some versions of the "Everything Says 'Hi'" CD singles in 2002 - details at http://www.illustrated-db-discography.nl/cdsingle/cdsingle5.htm

7. "Let Me Sleep Beside You" - released on the Nothing Has Changed compilation in 2014

8. "Hole in the Ground" - previously unreleased, but leaked in 2011 - not sure if the mix is identical or not

9. "Baby Loves That Way" - released as a b-side on some versions of the "Slow Burn" and "Everything Says 'Hi'" CD singles in 2002 - details at http://www.illustrated-db-discography.nl/cdsingle/cdsingle5.htm

10. "Can't Help Thinking About Me" - previously unreleased, never leaked

11. "Silly Boy Blue" - previously unreleased, but leaked in 2011. I think the mix of the leaked version is the "Alternate Ending" mix, not the one heard on Toy in Brilliant Adventures, but not positive. Either way, they're very close.

12. "Toy (Your Turn to Drive)" - released on the Nothing Has Changed compilation in 2014 in a longer mix. (Also available as a download for people who bought Reality at HMV in 2003, I think!)

The Toy:Box will give us two more leaked-but-never-released tracks with "Liza Jane" and "In the Heat of the Morning", plus a slew of alternate mixes - hopefully including all of the alternates I mentioned above.

Wow! Thank you! (I knew I came to the right place.)

Also--thank you for the link to that illustrated Bowie discography site. For whatever reason, it had never popped out at me via Google search. There goes my weekend...
