I finally got around to getting this/reading it today.

Although I'd read & seen a lot of the "bonus" stuff in back issues of the THE JACK KIRBY COLLECTOR, I thought Marvel did an absolute bang-up job with it & deserve some serious praise.

& getting Stan Lee & Joe Sinnott involved was an extra masterstroke. STUNNING stuff ohyes:

I enjoyed it a whole lot more than the Millar/Hitch outing!

I liked it, the extras and the reprint of 108 made up for the $4.99 cover price.

Haven't read it yet, but I really like the idea of this project. Great to see some "lost" work from one of the great masters finished and printed. Who knows what great work is long since lost to time? Cool to see some of it was saved.

It was fine, but not a lost great work. I thought it was funny that even though this was supposed to be restored to the original idea, Lee still scripted in the other direction from Kirby's plot. It made the revival more authentic, since he did this to Kirby's plots all the time.

From what I've read, Lee didn't like the plot the first time around and found it somewhat confusing, which is why it wasn't published.

At least, that's what it said in Marvel masterworks vol. 10.

It also said it came out in FF 108, cut up and with different art substituting in some places, which was the same month DC published Kirby's first work. :)

I just got this a couple of days ago. I liked it. Loved the art of Kirby. I love the ordinary clothing they were wearing. Very contemporary for that era (early 70s).

Less generous souls think Lee nixed the story out of spite over Kirby leaving and, as noted, held it back to compete (in altered form) with Kirby's DC debut. It's certainly no worse than many FF stories of the time that Lee had no trouble accepting.

But yet, the last issue of Kirby's was one that came after this, a first of two parter with Magneto and Namor, I think. So why would he accept that one, then, which even had to be finished in a second part?

and what happened between Kirby and Martin Goodman to make him leave? I heard that something specific happened (i guess the final straw) but not what.
