Long before they reinvented themselves as the kings of Saturday Night Fever, The Bee Gees were an amazing Australian trio singing songs that were more rooted by lilting folk guitar melodies than dance floor beats. The high, almost falsetto, harmonies were in place even in their hits of the mid- and late-1960s. The melodicism of hits like "Holiday" and "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" had a darker, even eerie, quality compared to the more typically melancholy "To Love Somebody." Comparing the music on Best of the Bee Gees, Volume 1 to the later antics of the Brothers Gibb is the proverbial apples and oranges. It's clear that the boys truly knew how to craft a hit regardless of the genre, but it does beg the question, "Will the real Bee Gees please stand up?" While both periods have their moments, the smart money seems to be on their earlier work.

I'm 99% certain my parent's vinyl copy of Vol. 1 had Spicks And Specks on it - why isn't it on the CD??

I couldn't agree more. After the reissues of the first three international Bee Gees' albums (they did release a couple in my home country of Australia before 1st), I was really looking forward to the continued reissue of the others. But not a bloody word, except some vague hints about a reissue of Odessa, which, from what I've read, has the least number of outtakes of the early albums).

Again an instance of the record companies treating the consumer with no regard (a more refined version of 'like s**t').

There's no shortage of Bee Gees comps available, so I too am puzzled as to why Rhino is futzing around with these instead of giving us more album reissues.

Watch...next will be a boxed set. 5 discs, and meant to supplant the excellent Tales of the Brothers Gibb set.

Not only did Vol. 1 originally include "Spicks and Specks", now replaced by "Tomorrow, Tomorrow", but Vol. 2 originally included "Wouldn't I Be Someone" which has now been dropped...

Am I correct in assuming that you're referring to the LPs? My copies of the Polydor CDs don't have either of the cuts you mentioned, so this change is nothing new to the Rhino reissues.

It's possible that the early CD issues were based on import LPs, which may have had different track lists. Just speculating.
