Arguably, the Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees are the most
popular/despised teams in their respective sports. They both have
huge nationwide followings. One calls themselves "America's Team"
and the other doesn't. It just hit me why the Yankees have never called
themselves "America's Team". It's not that they don't try to cultivate
a fanbase outside New York. It's not that they are more modest than
the Cowboys. It's just that the most important thing to the Yankees
aside from winning the World Series is being the #1 team in New York,
because like all true New Yorkers, they believe the rest of the country doesn't exist.

Yankee fans are arrogant. We don't care if we are hated and despised. We know we are better than you. We don't care that we spend the most money-we'll waive it in your faces. We don't want to be America's team, we just want to win. When Kansas CIty complains that they don't have enough money, we say "The problem is you don't have a real city." I used to say, we don't have rivalries with Boston or the Mets, they have envy of us, but we don't care about them.
We draw the most on the road, whether through fans or haters.
As Reggie Jackson said, "They don't boo nobodies."
"We play today, we win today - that's it."
- Mariano Duncan
"Some kids dream of joining the circus, other of becoming a major league baseball player. As a member of the New York Yankees, I've gotten to do both."
-Graig Nettles
"The essence of the Yankees is that they win. From in front or from behind, they win. And that's why the history of the New York Yankees is virtually the history of baseball."
- Dave Anderson
The New York Times
"During the 1920s New York Yankee owner Jacob Ruppert once described his perfect afternoon at Yankee Stadium. 'It's when the Yankees score eight runs in the first inning,' Ruppert said, 'and then slowly pull away.'" - Peter Golenbock in Dynasty: The New York Yankees (1975)
"I imagine rooting for the Yankees is like owning a Yacht." - Jimmy Cannon
"In a tough age which called for tough men in baseball, the Yankees were the toughest. They were managed by a perfectionist, bossed by a president who hated second place, and owned by a man who could say, even with a seventeen-game lead in 1936, "I can't stand the suspense. When are we going to clinch it?" - David Voigt in American Baseball (1970)
"The more self-centered and egotistical a guy is, the better ballplayer he's going to be. You take a team with twenty-five assholes and I'll show you a pennant. I'll show you the New York Yankees." - Pitcher Bill 'Spaceman' Lee
Hating the (New York) Yankees is as American as pizza pie, unwed mothers, and cheating on your income tax”
Mike Royko quotes
“I would rather beat the Yankees regularly than pitch a no hit game.”

They're not "America's Team" because we hate them. The Yankees have no say in the matter.
The Braves are America's Team.

All the kids, the rappers, the movie stars, most of them wear Yankee symbols these days. Still, don't care, it's all about the winning, and the love OR hate we inspire.

Oh, so that's the test of America's team? Okay, then I guess the Diamondbacks were America's Team when they ripped out your heart and stomped on while it was still beating.
And the current America's team is the White Sox?

Love us or hate us, everyone's talking about us. Our stuff sells the most licensing worldwide I believe.
26 World titles, 39 pennants
Plus, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle.
Wearing Yankee shirts in Florida is great-everyone either is a former New Yorker who loves them, or is a native who hates them-and tells you. But I always get a reaction. Wear a Braves shirt up here. No one cares. Though at the game, they might spill beer on you.

There's no question the Yankees are the greatest team in the history of baseball. We just hate you.

It's like people calling the Blue Jay's "Canada's Team".
Actually, it's Toronto's team and the rest of the country doesn't give a rat's ass.

No hate from Red Sox Nation? C'mon, you can't let the Braves be the only ones with the courage to stand up to us. Oh yeah, you can, you're the Sox.

The Red Sox are smugly silent ever since they caused the greatest debacle in the history of the Yankees. The Sox are my AL team.
I predict the Yankees will never again win the World Series. They will continue to have one of the best rosters in all of baseball, but will continue to have no heart, to play in a way that allows us to teach our kids how not to be.
If the Yankees were a character in a movie, they would be the Cobra Kai dojo in Karate Kid.

They'll win-pennants and Championshiops.
I love the mocking from a Braves fan-what was it 14 first place finishes in a row, one championship????? That is kind of sad.
The Red Sox got their win-and 85 year old men dropped dead across the country. But just like the Dogers got one win, but we clobbered them in all the others, the Red Sox continue to tbe clobbered team. They'll continue to chant Yankees Suck at parades for the Patriots when they win Super Bowls. Auch a sad twisted creature they are. Maybe this will be the therapy they need.

All the kids, the rappers, the movie stars, most of them wear Yankee symbols these days. Still, don't care, it's all about the winning, and the love OR hate we inspire. Part of Atlanta's problem is that they have been a victim of their own success---their fans have become very spoiled. Look at the attendance of the Yankees from 1947 to 1964, when they failed to win the American League pennant only THREE times, and you find attendance steadily declining. The same thing is happening with the Braves. The main part of the problem is that in Atlanta, as in much of the South, football and not baseball is king. (Should I mention that when the Washington Senators moved to Dallas/Fort Worth to become the Texas Rangers, they became the first MLB team ever to draw FEWER fans in their inaugural season than they did in their funeral season the year before?) The South does not need more baseball teams. Looking at Linda's home state, you could probably take away both the Marlins and Devil Rays and not much people will notice. That being said, 14 straight years of winning the NL East is remarkable. I don't think the Yankees' current streak will last that long before it is snapped. Eddie Cunningham

The same thing is happening with the Braves. That is true, but then you had 3 ball teams, and even after the other two moved, their remained deep divisions between national league fans and american league fans at that time. Today, people seem to want a winner more. So attendance keeps satying strong or going up

I don't even watch baseball and I hate them too. While I'm at it; screw the Ravens too.
