When I first bought this, I thought it was one of the best sounding live albums I'd ever heard. The fact that it was redone in the studio never entered my mind. Until I read Sammy's book. Oh well...I guess if it sounds good, it's okay they fudged it....

According to Sammy's new book the VH brothers took the tapes and rerecorded much of their performance in the studio without consulting him. As a result, Sammy's vocals were either out of synch or not in tune. Sammy was called in to re-record just about all of his vocals in order to match everything up. The book makes it sounds as though a significant portion (if not all) of Right Here Right Now was performed/re-cut in the studio. You'd think with all that re-recording they would have realized they should have left Judgement Day, Man On a Mission, In N Out, Pleasure Dome and Spanked off the set. That run of songs absolutely killed the album for me.
I heard a great quote on the radio where the reviewer said Steven Tyler's new book makes Hagar read like F.Scott Fitzgerald.

Well, there goes another "live" album out the window.

Another tip off should have been that Andy Johns was brought in to finish the album up and given a co-producer credit. If the band just did it on tour and it was truly live, then technically, it's self-produced.

That run of songs absolutely killed the album for me. Unfortunately, since this is from the For Unlawful... tour, you get more of the relatively weak material from that album. It wasn't like, say, just a "greatest hits" live type of release. (That would be the Roth tour, if anything ever gets released from that era.) At least there's a little bit of relief in the sequencing with the insertion of better songs between the For Unlawful... tracks. rrbbkk wrote: I always thought this album sounded awful Yeah, it was never really all that exciting to me either. To be honest, I don't know if I still even have a copy. Live Without A Net seemed like a lot more fun.

It was. I have a bootleg from that tour. Only thing that mars it is that it's slightly sped up.
The F.U.C.K. tour was my least favorite from the Van Hagar era.
Ironically, they were really good on the RHRN tour -- and a diaper-clad Wolfie ran out onstage during Eddie's solo.

Live Without a Net was damn great when it came out...new singer...great new album...it was like fresh VH. 5150 was an incredible album and I would love to see an official live full show release from that tour.

VH is real stingy when it comes to their vault. No official live releases with Roth on album or video, no box set of rarities during the long hibernation last decade. And 13 years between studio albums.

This live album has always been lousy to me and I didn't care for Live Without A Net either-way too much of 5150 and Sammy solo. I saw that tour and it was a good show but the set list was weak and also had lame covers. To be honest, I thought the 88-89 tour was the best of the Sammy years and the VH III tour of 1998 had the best setlist and playing by Eddie of any of the post-Roth tours.

I gave VH3 a listen but was not crazy about the album. I saw the set lists for that era and they did look great, but I never heard a bootleg from that tour.

I only went to see the Cherone tour because I knew they were doing the old Roth tunes and who knew if Dave would ever return.
Van Halen III still stands as the worst album in their catalog.

I am not surprised that this live album was extensively overdubbed. Eddie VH was dead set against VH ever releasing a live album. He's said in numerous interviews over the years that he couldn't possibly understand why any musician would ever release one. A live show is a live show - you are either at it, or you aren't. Live albums to him are stupid, dumb and utterly pointless. He has also claimed that there isn't a live album in the history of rock music that is truly live....he even has it on good authority that Cream's live version of "Crossroads" is totally overdubbed. Given all this, I am not surprised that he remade RHRN into essentially a studio album with crowd noise on top of it.
Of course I don't agree with Ed's feelings regarding live albums, but that is his take on it.
BTW = it is to my understanding that the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge album was way overcut for - that there were at least 7 or 8 extra songs that were recorded, mixed and finished during the sessions. I seem to recall some of the titles as being "Out Of The Ether," "The Wish" and "You'll Never Know." Some of them are keyboard tunes. They've yet to find their way on to any bootlegs (one of the benefits of owning your own studio is that stuff leaks out less often). Some of them must be good because Ed said in a Guitar Player interview that he was against "Top of The World" being put on the album - he felt that the leftover tracks were better.

Saw Van Halen kick off their 1998 tour in Houston at The Cynthia Mitchell Woods Pavilion and Eddie was on fire. Just hearing songs Sammy refused to do was awesome and Cherone was serviceable on vocals. "Mean Streets" was worth the price of admission alone. Kenny Wayne Shepherd had opened off of his second album, which is a very good album, but he sounded like an amateur compared to Eddie that night. Much different than when I saw them on their 1984 tour and they were pedestrian, Eddie was bored and the solos were unbearable.

Kenny Wayne Shepard opened the Boston show and it was ehh for me. But hearing the old tunes was good.
