Nutshell version of this post -- FF is getting good under Millar/Hitch, and you should start now (with Issue 559 at the latest).

I did a search and did not see a regular thread for this -- just some from way back when the news came out.

I've been reading since the start of their run -- seems like about six issues or so. And it has ranged from decent to good. I like Hitchy's style and Millar's writing, so there were no personal preferences to overcome. But something about it was just kind okay, like we were waiting for something to really start happening.

But this latest story -- man. It seems like we're on the verge of something good.

This mini-arc (though building on the Nu-Earth story that started at the beginning of Millar/Hitch) is Part 2 of the story called "The Death of the Invisible Woman." In the first part, Doctor Doom got but-whooped and captured by a mysterious group, and now Johnny is in their sights. Meanwhile, it seems Nu-Earth is not what it was billed as (hint: it's more evil than we thought).

What follows are major, major MONGO SPOILERS, so do not read if I have convinced you to at least PICK UP ISSUE 559.

Spoiler: show
This bad guy group calling itself the Defenders has Doom and Johnny captured, one of them looks like a genius Hulk -- Johnny looks at him and says "Hulk?" -- and the "Hulk" genius says "This machine we're building needs real power for the job that lies ahead. You guys are GOOD, but our main battery can be found down there right beneath your feet." They look down, and it's Galactus sprawled out on his back inside some giant Death Star thing. I don't know if it's Nu-Earth or what.

Jump on board. Strap in. Post here each month.

I've been enjoying it. I'll reread the issues and post some thoughts.

Have you read 559 yet? Was it just me, or was that a succession of "whoa" moments?

(Hint, the correct answer is that it was not just me)

It was not just you. The last page reveal caught me completely off-guard and was definitely a "whoa" moment.

Without delving again into my spoiler text above, is the character I referred to as "genius" version himself somebody I should recognize? Does most of the audience (besides me) probably know what he signifies? Who he is?

I think it ties into Millar's 1985 and current Wolverine run, but I'm not sure exactly how.

It used to never be good though. I mean, they had that hack Lee writing it for awhile, but really, until Millar started writing it, it's been just dross.

I tried it, but didn't hold my interest. I don't like the F4 at all, and Millar isn't a writer good enough to keep me reading despite that.

Love the FF and Hitch's art is great but the likenesses put me off. BUT, since Jay recommended Thor and it is good, I will give FF a second look. Also, my LCS probalby has most of the back issues still on the stands.

What happens in 559?

Does Batman appear?

If he doesn't, I find it unlikely I'll read it anytime soon. :p

For many years, I didn't like the F4 at all. Then I started reading the Byrne issues. For some reason, they resonated with me to the point that I eventually learned to appreciate the team. It went for nearly 100 issues of bad stuff though between Kirby's last issue and the first issue Byrne wrote and drew.

I can consider it worth a gander, though I think I will do like Kurt. I will wait for the trade.

No, but the Hooded Man is in it.

I had the opposite reaction. I didn't like the F4, then I read some of Byrne's issues and now I hated them. Waid brought me back to just not liking them.

I don't think FF was all bad between Kirby and Byrne.

I loved the early Buscema FF. Reading those issues in "Marvel's Greatest Comics" got me hooked on FF before JB came along.

I'm a huge fan of the concept of the FF, but the execution usually does nothing for me. I love the Lee/Kirby issues, the Simonson run, and the Waid/Wieringo run, but that's about it. Even Byrne's, when I finally started reading through it, couldn't hold my attention.

Oh gawd, I hope not. Really?

I would like this FF run to sit alone.
