Bloc Party ditch dance edge

Dec 16, 2007

Bloc Party have admitted that their recent hit single will not be a reflection of what their forthcoming third album is like.

Frontman Kele Okereke clams the track 'Flux', which has given the band a new dance edge, has allowed the four-piece to broaden their horizons.

But he warned that the band will not be going in the same direction for the follow up to 'A Weekend In The City'.

He told BBC 6 Music: "'Flux' isn't an indication at all about the next record. The important thing about this record for me was that it showed we could do anything we wanted, we weren't going to settle for being any other guitar band of 2007. Luckily it was successful."

Drummer Matt Tong added: "I think one crucial thing about that song was it was radically different from anything we attempted before and I think it was important in terms of opening up... broadening our horizons".

Several remixes of track were given away on a covermount CD in the NME last month.

The song charted at Number Eight in the UK singles chart.

Following a long run of summer festivals and sold out tour dates, Bloc Party brings us their newest studio effort. [title]Intimacy[/title] is a fittingly up-close title for an album that is, immediately, in-your-face and in-your-ear. Bloc Party's third album is a thrillingly radical record, bristling with percussive innovation, scorching riffs, orchestral sampledelia, and biting emotional candor.

2. Mercury
3. Halo
4. Biko
5. Trojan Horse

Here's the [lilred]Flux[/lilred] CD single, BTW. Consider this a tweener release that bridges the gap between second and (forthcoming) third albums.

Bloc Party to release new material tomorrow (July 7)?

Jul 6, 2008

Bloc Party have launched a mystery count-down on their website, http://www.blocparty.com, with a time counter set to reach zero at 11am (BST) tomorrow (July 7).

The band have not given any indication of what will occur when the counter reaches zero. However, as they are currently working on their third album, fans have been speculating about the possibility of the Kele Okereke and co. making a new track available online.

As previously reported in NME magazine, the band are working on new material with producers Jacknife Lee and Paul Epworth in Kent.

Content usually available at Blocparty.com beyond the count-down homepage is now unavailable, leading some fans to suggest that the count-down may be pointing to a new website as opposed to new music.

Given the band's recent release history, they'd probably just do a "website remix" rather than create a new one...

Bloc Party irritate fans with 'countdown'

Jul 7, 2008

Bloc Party have angered fans by posting a cryptic countdown on their website, http://www.blocparty.com, which simply revealed a plug for a radio show when the time reached zero at 11am (BST) today.

Fans have e-mailed NME.COM to voice their displeasure at the stunt. It was speculated that Bloc Party may give away new music when the countdown reached zero.

Instead, at 11am the countdown disappeared to reveal a radio plug for Zane Lowe's show on BBC Radio 1, set to air tonight (July 7) at 7:30pm.

"It's a bit pointless," wrote NME.COM user 'Jackie'. "They could have just put up the info about the show on their website and not got our hopes up about the possibility of hearing new music straightaway."

There is no information yet on Zane Lowe's BBC homepage as to what will feature on tonight's show, but many fans who contacted NME.COM are still expecting new material.

Bloc Party unveil surprise new single on radio

Jul 7, 2008

Bloc Party are set to release a brand new single next month and have previewed it on radio this evening.

'Mercury', out August 11, was announced and played for the first time on Zane Lowe's show on Radio 1 at 7.30pm (BST) tonight (July 7).

Speaking to Lowe about 'Mercury', frontman Kele Okereke said: "It's a song we finished a little while ago that we're really proud of so we thought we'd let everyone hear it. I'm still somewhat in awe."

Asked about the state of the band's upcoming third album, produced by Paul Epworth and Jacknife Lee, Okereke said: "I think we're making the record I always wanted us to make. We're kind of just in the middle of it, we're still writing songs and mixing stuff."

He added that the album could be released as early as the end of the year.

Bloc Party fans had this morning been left bemused after a countdown on the band's website led to only an advert for Zane Lowe's radio show.

'Mercury' and its video are available to access on Zane Lowe's page on the Radio 1 site from now.

Their third album might be the most interesting in years for me, although I still feel their first demos of 'she's hearing voices''the marshalls are dead' & 'the answer' are probably the best thing they've done, "silent alarm" is probably my favourite debut album since Oasis' & although "a weekend in the city" is slightly weaker, it probably has better stand out tracks in my opinion (the opening salvo of "song for clay" & "hunting for witches" alone kills me every time).

But I would actually be happy if they went down the route of 'flux' & 'mercury' with the next lp.. I like it when bands experiment & 'grow', rather than stagnate or turn into one trick ponies, constantly playing a medley of their 'greatest hits' from album #1 & #2, it's why radiohead are never not interesting.

So I kind of hope they lied when they said 'flux' was a one off, & that 'mercury' is a sign of that.

Bloc Party to release new album this week

Aug 18, 2008

Bloc Party will release their new album in three days time (August 21).

The band announced the shock release during a webchat with fans on blocparty.com today (August 18).

NME.COM can exclusively reveal that 'Intimacy', the band's third album, is available to pre-order on CD and mp3 from http://blocparty.sandbag.uk.com now.

Fans can choose whether to pay either £5 for a high-quality mp3 bundle (to be delivered on August 21), £8 for a CD (to be delivered on October 27), or £10 for a combined order of both CD and mp3 bundle.

'Intimacy' was recorded in two separate sessions, as the band chose to work with both Paul Epworth and Jacknife Lee on the record.

The CD release of 'Intimacy' will include additional tracks unavailable on the mp3 bundle release.

Bloc Party reveal new non-album single

Sep 9, 2008

Bloc Party have exclusively revealed to NME.COM that their next single will be called 'Talons'.

Released on October 20, the track doesn't feature on the band's recently released download album 'Intimacy'.

Speaking to NME.COM, singer Kele Okereke declared that the band wanted to "keep things fresh".

"'Talons' is one of the last songs we recorded during the 'Intimacy' sessions," he said. "I always had it in mind to be one of the extra tracks we promised for the CD. It turned out so great so we decided to make it the next single, simple as that."

Good for you Invisible Pedestrian, bought this and Kasier Chiefs as well. It was a great week for new releases (including Ryan Adams).

Now when will the new Kasiban be released? Hopefully soon....

Many of these new bands are starting to hit their stride ( 3 albums released as example) and this is what the labels need to do, allow them to grow. Think of our favorite classic records and what release number they were per their respective catalogues.

Rick:
Couldn't agree more! It's so exciting seeing bands like Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs, Keane, Dresden Dolls, Snow Patrol, Coldplay, Air, Kasabian, Daft Punk, Arctic Monkeys, Cold War Kids, Placebo, The Killers, etc. all continuing their careers with albums that keep changing and getting better and better. Some of these bands started in the late 90's, but they've remained very relevant in the 00's, including older acts like Radiohead, Oasis and Beck.
I really love all these acts and it's so cool that ther's so much good music out there-and these bands now hitting their 3rd albums like Kaiser Chiefs, Killers, Kasabian, Keane, Bloc Party (what's with all these great acts starting with the letter K?) are reaching a very interesting point in their careers and are not disappointing!
