I recieved the second batch of UFO remasters (Obsession , SITN , Lights Out ) from Amazon this morning . I gave all of them a listen , not in their entirety though , they sound great , the bonus tracks are excellent and great booklets too. It does sound like there is an improvement on SITN compared to the 1999 version . I honestly feel that this (all 6 Ufo cd's) is the best remastering I ever heard . The only bad thing is that now I have to wait another 6 months for batch # 3 . If you're a UFO fan all 6 of these are must haves . Many thanks to EMI for something that is long overdue .

Don,

I got Obsession and Light's Out. Listening to "Just another suicide" on my new equipment at home was stunning...

How was the booklet for SITN? I passed since I have the "Expanded Edition" from a few years back and there were no new tracks added from that.

So do you think it will be a set of 4 (instead of 3) next go around, to complete the official era of UFO?

1. No Place to Run
2. Wild Willing and the Innocent (my fav)
3. Mechannix
4. Making Contact

Hopefully this Fall! (hell, next week!)

Guys, I've been meaning to ask about the UFO remasters....

Using Deep Discount as my reference, there seems to have been several batches in recent years (my definition of batches: think Elvis Costello's remasters on Rhino, now Hippo). Which label's remasters should I be going for, and are they domestic releases? Thanks, Dan

EMI, 2008 releases.

Just make sure the description mentions bonus tracks. There were remasters from 5 years ago or so that had no new material from the original LP's

The booklet for SITN is just like the booklets in Lights Out and Obsession , they are all very nice. True there are no new tracks on it but I swear that there is a big improvement in the sound .
Don't forget Misdeamenour , that was a Chrysalis release too . Although theres no Schenker or Chapman , it is a decent cd .
Hopefully there are released soon.

All the new remasters have at least 3 or 4 bonus tracks and sound much better than the others . The first batch consited of Phenomenon , No Heavy Petting and Force It , the 2nd batch consits of Lights Out , Obsession and Strangers In The Night . I found Amazon to be the cheapest (Amazon Direct not a seller) and the have free shipping when ordering over $25.00 and they deliver much faster than Tower , Deep Discount . The next cheapest was CD Uninverse , no free shipping though and they do deliver fast .

Don:
Are you sure about "Strangers" being better? I heard it was the same remastering as '99 and that one sounded awesome-if it's different, damn, I have to spend more money.
I just ordered the other two. "Lights Out", "Obsession" and "Strangers" make up one of the best stretches by a band in rock history-"Obsession" is a masterpiece and to hear these remastered might make we weep! This is when Ron Nevison was a good producer-not doing that hideous crap in the 80s he had so much success with (Ozzy hated him so much, he basically disowns "The Ultimate Sin").
The next batch ends with "No Place To Run" (an absolute gem produced by George Martin!), "The Wild, The Willing, The Innocent", "Mechanix" and "Making Contact".
"Misdemeanor" will not be part of these-it's pretty much crap pop Metal that anyone could have done with tons of keys and generic late 80s sounding drums-Phil Mogg basically reformed the band in name only although Paul Raymond was still there too (he would soon quit, then there was the abominable EP "Ain't Misbehavin' " in 1988 which was an absolute travesty and led Mogg to shut 'er down). I do like a couple of songs but it's just not UFO. I wouldn't want anyone to think this is what UFO was like.
This final batch is due for release in October.

I honestly think that the new SITN sounds better than the 1999 version . I will play them side by side and if the old one is just as good I will let you know . No need to waste money but I do think its better . I will go see in a little while.

The same track list between the two. I confirmed it this afternoon at the Best Buy.

I.P.,

Do you have a source as to knowing they will be released in Oct.?...Just curious. Would love to know what bonus tracks will be added... hopefully their are some B-Sides this go around. With so much live UFO stuff out there, I prefer the b-sides much more...

Thanks for this thread, I plan on picking these up too, even though I have the all of Schenker era Japanese remasters from '99 which sound phenomenom, er phenomenal. I bought the previous 3 new ones mostly for the bonus tracks and compared the sound quality to the jap ones and didn't notice much (if any) difference but I don't have golden ears.

I was going to pass on STRANGERS though since I have the Chrysalis expanded edition and there are no extra tracks on the new one afaik as compared to that one. Also I don't think mastering/remastering should make that much difference on a live album as it can on a studio one. Maybe I need to rethink that though. If it was under $10 I wouldn't think twice but spending $13-15 for an album yet again (like 4 or 5 times now) it kind of bugs me.

The Strangers reissue that just came out is definitely better sounding imho[the old one was mastered too loudly compared to the new one].
