I was very disappointed in their performance the last time I saw them at MSG. Could be the inclusion of the awful Endless Wire didn't help either. But waht really got me was how bad Daltrey sounded that night.

Excellent suggestion, Linda!! Bring in Paul Rodgers, record a studio album of "re-interpreted" old Who songs, and then release it through Walmart as USB only! There's no way they could miss!!

I find it very difficult to listen to Roger sing these days, and frankly I would guess that it was all of these reunion shows that blew out his voice--I would have to look up one of those Who concert databases, but I would wager that Roger has probably performed more concerts from 1996-2006 than he did from 1976-1996.

You're forgetting about the Quadrophenia Farewell Tour, and the rants from Pete that every tour since 1982 will be their last tour. I'm tired of it. Either retire or don't. Just don't go out every few years on the road and say it's our last tour.

The Quadrophenia tour was never billed as a farewell tour, nor have any of the others since then. Pete may occasionaly mouth off about such, though I don't recall him ever saying that this tour or that tour was a farewell. In any case, none of the tours since 1982 has ever been officially labelled as a "farewell tour".

This is correct. The '96 tour (which oddly did not do well-I saw the first show in Philly but the second one was cancelled and some dates drew only 1/2 capacity-my guess is it was due to "Quadrophenia" only), was not a farewell tour at all and was never billed as such, nor were any other tours.
In fact, Pete didn't even want it billed as The Who, though it was. They toured again in 1997 claiming it to be a "greatest hits" type show, but it was still "Quadrophenia", but an even worse one without Billy Idol and the Old Pervert Scumbag (no name needed).
There were the awesome 1999 gigs (5 in the US and a few overseas) that kicked ass and led to the great tours of 2000 and 2002 (of course, Entwhistle only played the overseas gigs in 2002 which was a shame-the shows were still good but it was here where I thought The Who should've stopped).
They also toured in 2004, 2006 and 2007 (and also played The Concert For New York in 2001 which was a stellar performance) and Live 8 in 2005 which was so-so with a fill-in rhythm section.
To me, it wasn't until 2006 that I noticed Roger struggling, but the "Endless Wire" album was so abysmal that even though the show I saw was pretty good, the new material coupled with Roger's voice left me a bit sad.
It's probably still a good show now, but not enough of a good show for me to plunk down money I don't have-I'll probably be satisfied with seeing them 7 times and enjoy those memories.

It's time for the Who to go by by (actually it was time when Entwhistle passed away; maybe even when Moon passed away. ).

These two recordings will be out sometime this Fall, according to The Who's website.

Larry,
I'm keeping my fingers crossed. That's been the plan all along. But with Pete, you never can be too sure nowadays.

I'm just disappointed that we still haven't gotten that disc of "Endless Wire" demos that Pete promised--and has he ever mentioned anything further about the studio album of blues covers or whatever it was?

Jack Bruce To Pay Tribute To John Entwistle
by Paul Cashmere - July 25 2008

Cream`s Jack Bruce will perform a tribute concert for The Who`s John Entwistle on the closing night of the Benefit Concert for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Cream lead singer and bass player will close the event in Cary, North Carolina on September 20.

Bruce will join members of Entwistle`s band and perform the music of The Who as the encore tribute to the late John. The all-star group will include Deep Purple/ Rainbow`s Joe Lynn Turner, Grand Funk Railroad`s Mark Farner and Blue Oyster Cult`s Buck Dharma.

"We are so pleased that Jack Bruce, whose concert appearances have been quite rare over the years, has agreed to play the final set of this extraordinary two-day benefit concert," said Benefit Concert Chairman and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame National Trustee, Rick French in a statement.

Other acts scheduled to appear at the two-day festival are Jefferson Starship, Styx`s Dennis DeYoung and Dave Mason.

Man...I would love to be at that show. It's great that Entwistle is being remembered in this way. His contribution to the Who as a band - and to electric bass guitar as an instrument - are often overlooked.

THE WHO HELP LONDON AREA TO TOP ROCK N ROLL BIRTHPLACE CHART

The Who's Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwhistle have helped secure Shepherd's Bush in London, as the UK's rock and roll hotspot, beating off competition from Liverpool and Manchester in a new poll.

The chart compiled by guitarrockstar also found that other successful rockstars to hail from West London include The Clash's Mick Jones and Paul Simonon, Sex Pistols' Glen Matlock, Paul Cook and Steve Jones and The Animals' John Weider.

Shepherd’s Bush's avearge of 1/1,222 rock stars per head of the population puts it above anywhere else in the UK, based on a poll of 500 musicians.

The W12 postcode area is also home to musicians who have moved there from other areas, including Pete Doherty and Bush's Gavin Rossdale.

However, despite the high count in West London, in terms of top UK cities, Manchester came out top. Birthplace of Oasis, The Smiths, Stone Roses and Joy Division – Manchester's ratio is one rock star to every 17,850 of the population, followed by Oxford (1/ 24,170) and Liverpool (1 / 29,073).

The research was conducted to launch an online competition searching for for the UK’s Guitar RockStar Idol.

The Who to receive John F Kennedy award

The Who are set to receive a Kennedy Center Honour on December 7 in Washington for their contribution to American culture.

Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey will receive the award from Caroline Kennedy - the daughter of former US President John F Kennedy.

This winter's award, distributed by The Kennedy Center, will be the first of its kind given to a band.

Elton John is the only previous British musician to receive the honour, being awarded his in 2004.

Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Chuck Berry and Steven Spielberg are among those who have won it in the past.

Pete Doherty's Babyshambles to perform with Who's Roger Daltrey

Babyshambles are set to be joined by The Who's Roger Daltrey for a one-off gig next January.

The band will team up with the singer at the Bristol Academy on January 12.

Daltrey originally met Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty in July at the funeral of Daniel Squires, a 16-year-old cancer sufferer who had struck up a friendship with the former Libertine. Doherty performed a song at Squires' wake, and Daltrey was so impressed with his voice that he insisted that they team up for the gig.

Proceeds for the gig will go towards Moonfest - the festival which Babyshambles were banned from playing at earlier this year. Organisers hope to put on the bash in 2009.

Tickets for the gig are on sale now.

The Who's Keith Moon to be honoured with 'blue plaque'

The Who's late drummer Keith Moon is to be honoured with a "blue plaque" at one of the former sites of London's Marquee Club, the legendary venue that played host to a number of his famous kit-trashing performances.

The plaque will be unveiled by Moon's former bandmates Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend at a ceremony in March.

The tribute follows a campaign by Moon's fans, who disagreed with English Heritage's refusal to acknowledge his place in music history, according to The Independent.

English Heritage had apparently refused to sanction a plaque due to Moon's legendary hell-raising.

However, the Heritage Foundation has brokered a deal with Westminster City Council to do the job instead.

"Keith has been overlooked but was such a character – you don't get characters like him anymore. We were delighted to organise a plaque for Keith, and the Marquee is the perfect place because it was at the centre of the rock gigs in London," David Graham, a trustee of the charity, told the newspaper.

A spokesperson for English Heritage told the newspaper that "only the most outstanding historical figures" came through the shortlisting process for plaques.

The Who’s Roger Daltrey has scheduled a solo tour of North America, scheduled to kick off October 10 in Vancouver.

The outing is Daltrey’s first solo jaunt since 1985 and features more intimate venues than The Who usually frequent.

“I thought it’d be nice to play smaller, more intimate venues,” Daltrey said in a statement. “I look forward to getting back to that. I want to give people a good night out. The economic situation being what it is these days, I think that’s what they want: to go out and feel they’ve had a good jolly-up.”

Daltrey will be joined onstage by a longtime collaborator, guitarist/backup singer Simon Townshend, guitarist/musical director Frank Simes, keyboardist Loren Gold, bassist Jon Button and drummer Scott Devours.

He plans to perform “his version” of Who songs, some covers, plus solo material, some of which he has never before performed live.

I love "The Ox". Wow, what a lineup! I go see this without reservation if they were to come to Florida. I hope someone records this.
