The two most glaring omissions seem to be the STARTLING STORIES: BANNER and all of the Bruce Jones run (considering the list is aimed at fans of the movie).

It's not in print, but I treasure my Hulk Fireside book from the 1970's. Think about the historic significance of these books -- one of the creators (Stan), only 16 years after the Hulk's creation, compiled selections of the stories he felt were the best representative stories, and wrote short essays to introduce them. Classic.

For those who wonder what's in it -- an origin retelling from the original Hulk #3, the Avengers vs. Hulk story (was that Avengers 3, I think?), the FF battle against the Hulk (FF 12? maybe), then a good long run of the inaugural Tales to Astonish arc (about 12 issues, half issues, drawn by Ditko and Kirby -- has there ever been another tight story arc with Ditko followed by Kirby?), and then one Gil Kane Hulk story.

I'm content to see Jones' work left off. His Hulk run was really weak. Never understood what people saw in it.

Apart from Peter David's work, most of the Hulk stuff I like isn't collected. Bill Mantlo's run deserves the Visionaries treatment, as does Roger Stern's.

My first thought is how funny it is they're calling it the "essential" list but Essential Hulk volumes are not on the list. :)

True, but the Omnibus is the same as Essential Hulk 1, plus a couple more stories.

Yes, but the message is "these aren't really all that essential, despite our calling them Essential".

Tempest Fugit is pure awful. Ugh.

The PAD trade where they merge the Hulks should be on the list, just for sheer significance (and the Keown art).

If the Sal Buscema run of Hulk is not on that list, then the list is a sham.

I don't think they've collected that into a trade.

Well, these are collections, and most of the above (such as the Stern and Buscema runs) hasn't really been collected.

That said, Future Imperfect needs to be on this list. It's out of print, though.

Besides, notice how many of these are really, really new? Planet Hulk as a paperback is fairly new, WWHulk and Ult. IM vs Hulk are only a few weeks old, as are the Hulk Omnibus, Visionaries: Byrne and Visionaries: PAD.

This isn't supposed to be a deifntive list-- it's the stuff they're selling right now.

I have that book, Jay! Love it!

My kids are reading the Stern/Mantlo/Sal Hulks. Really they should be collected in color somewhere. Thses are the Hulks that laid the foundation for Byrne and PAD. Fun stuff!

I was a young boy when I got it -- my copy has a mustache drawn on Bruce and the Hulk on the cover, in pen.

Yeah, isn't it? Mantlo's material is underrated -- I imagine at the time it was overshadowed by its contemporaries, since that was the "New Silver Age" period with Byrne on FF, Stern on Avengers, Simonson on Thor, Miller on Daredevil, etc. But Mantlo wrote the best "Hulk Will Smash" Hulk of anyone, I think.

MIne is pretty beat up. Maybe I'll scan it. My kids love it, though.
