Today, I have a craving for Australian R and Roll. Personal favorites include AC/DC/ The HooDoo Gurus, Mental As Anything, and the great Jimmy Barnes. Does anyone care to share their picks?

First two Men at Work albums. Fun 80s new wave-pop.

The Aussies had a great beat and garage rock scene in the sixties. My fave's include the Easybeats,
the Missing Links, the Purple Hearts, the Elois, the Atlantics, Masters Apprentice and the La De Da's.
Plus the Bee Gee's Australian only albums (before they moved to England) are pretty cool.

Favorite bands from the late 70's/early 80's include the Saints, Radio Birdman, the Scientists, the Stems,
the Lime Spiders and the Celebate Rifles.

New fave's include the Pink Fits, the Shimmys, the Dolly Rocker Movement, Johnny Casino's
Easy Action, the Crusaders, Stonage Hearts and the Shindiggers.

I forgot Midnight Oil. I can't understand all the fuss over Cold Chisel. And Willy, very impressive list. I've only heard of two of those groups.

Flash and the Pan rose from the remains of the Easybeats. Their debut album is a synth-pop/new wave classic.

The wonderful two-disc Aussie-garage rock DO THE POP! collection was recently augmented by two 2-disc follow-ups, none of which repeat tracks from the original. Actually, DO THE POP! REDUX, PART ONE is already out; PART TWO will be released in June.

If you like Barnsie and Cold Chisel and aren't already aware of it, Living Loud has some interesting moments.A pseudo-heavy metal "supergroup," it has JB handling vocals, joined by Lee Kerslake and Bob Daisley from Uriah Heep, and Steve Morse of the Dixie Dregs. It came out in 2004, I think.
More in the LRB vein, check out the three albums by Southern Sons.
For some '80s fun beyond Men at Work and INXS, you could pick up the first Pseudo Echo disc, along with good hits collections by Icehouse, the Divinyls and the Models.
And from Melbourne, Boom Crash Opera's 1989 "These Here Are Crazy Times" is worth owning for the song "Onion Skin" alone.

IMHO - the greatest band from down under was (is - since they recently got back together) - DADDY COOL.

Only toured the States a couple of times...bombed and never returned. They are worth checking out - GREAT Rock N' Roll.

So much great music down under!

AC/DC
Midnight Oil
Icehouse
Angel City (or The Angels as they are known down under-did anybody mention them? They're legendary-kick-ass hard rock with a bit of metal and other forms of music in there)
The Church
Men At Work-one of my favorite bands, and thus...
Colin Hay-brilliant songwriter now getting his due
The Choirboys
Dragon-awesome band-started as punk, like The Stranglers moved on to different styles-their only US hit "Rain" from 1984 is one of my favorite songs ever
INXS
Divinyls
Cold Chisel
Rick Springfield
Mondo Rock
Buffalo
Mental As Anything
Ghostwriters
Wolfmother
Sneaky Sound Sysytem
Missy Higgins
Rose Tattoo-another legendary band-niker metal at it's finest, with the infamous Angry Anderson as singer-Guns n' Roses loved these guys as they've covered them and had them open up for them

The Angels (or Angel City in the States): I agree with you, IP, they kicked ass! At one point, they were more popular in Australia than even AC/DC, with whom they were often compared (both were on Albert Records early, and they both had a somewhat heavy sound, but The Angels generally had more, ahem, sophisticated lyrics, if you know what I mean).

Radio Birdman
AC/DC
Hoodoo Gurus
Flash & The Pan
The Church
Midnight Oil
INXS
Peter Allen
Crowded House (although Neil Finn was from New Zealand)
Hunters & Collectors
Frente!

and one my favorites no one has mentioned yet ... Died Pretty

There is a wealth of Australian music out there! I consider AC/DC to be "Australian" because that is where they formed and built their reputation, although Angus, Malcolm and Bon were all born in Scotland and emigrated to Australia when they were growing up. Likewise, all the members of the Easybeats originated from Europe, Deniz Tek of Radio Birdman was born in Michigan, etc., etc.

Wow! Good to see others remember the Choirboys, Rose Tattoo, and the Angels (or Angel City). If you're into the hard rock end of things, Kings of the Sun is a great band. I can remember they had a video for a song called "Drop The Gun".

The very first CD I ever ordered from Amazon was Goanna's Spirit of Place. "Solid Rock" is one of my favorite lost hits of the 80s (well it got a lot of airplay on MTV and DRE, anyway).
