I saw a blurb in USA Today which heralds the announcement from Amoeba Records a 2-disc CD set of Gram Parsons Live in 1969. These appear to be two separate shows. He opened for The Grateful Dead. The article said the tapes were stored away in GD vaults. Anyway, it will be released in September. No specific date in September was stated in the article.
I recall reporting on this about ayear or so ago and then it got put on the backburner. I'm very happy to see that it has resurfaced. I'm also very happy to see that the title of the discs reads Archive, Volume 1. I'm very much looking to more material from him.

Updated thread title with the new release date. ~ Linda

This is actually a release compiled from three Flying Burrito Bros. shows. I don't know why they are titling it "Gram Parsons," seems a bit dishonest to me and disrespectful to the Flying Burrito Bros. as a band.

Rats!

I went from excited to bumed in about 10 seconds. On to the next letdown.

However the Gram mini box is very cool and nice sounding, so I still have that to fall back on until a real treat comes our way

I thought the idea is this CD is called "The Flying Burritos Brothers Live at the Avalon 1969," but it's the first installment in a series called "Gram Parsons Archives."

When it comes to Parsons, I'll take it in any context.

Here's the press release:

>> Two-CD, High Fidelity Live Set 'Gram Parsons Archives Vol. 1: The Flying Burrito Brothers "Live" At The Avalon 1969' Out October 30th On Amoeba Records

Material From 1969 Found In Grateful Dead Vaults; Features Ten Songs Never Recorded By Parsons And Never Before Available

Amoeba Records will release a major addition to Gram Parsons' discography with ‘Gram Parsons Archives Vol. 1: The Flying Burrito Brothers “Live” at the Avalon 1969’, due October 30th from the newly formed label. The two CD, 27-track set includes a number of never-before-heard -- though long rumored -- rarities.

Gram Parsons, leading the Flying Burrito Brothers, opened for the Grateful Dead April 4, 5 and 6, 1969 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The April 4th show has never been heard in any form. The bonus disc is the April 6th show. For years these tapes were rumored to exist and were finally unearthed in the Grateful Dead vault. The shows were recorded by the legendary sound engineer Bear (Owsley Stanley), and are the highest quality Gram Parsons live material available.

Amoeba Records, started by the owners of the revered independent record store of the same name, is launching with the August 28 release of smoky-voiced singer and songwriter Brandi Shearer’s ‘Close to Dark.’ The album is co-produced by Larry Klein, known for his work with Joni Mitchell and Madeleine Peyroux, among others.

Rarities on ‘Gram Parsons Archives Vol. 1: The Flying Burrito Brothers “Live” at the Avalon 1969’ include Gram’s unique choice of mainly country standards, which are not on any other official Gram Parsons recording:

Undo The Right/Somebody’s Back In Town
She Once Lived Here
Mental Revenge
We’ve Got To Get Ourselves Together
Lucille
You Win Again
Long Black Limousine
Sweet Dream Baby
When Will I Be Loved <<

And here's the album!

At the time of this incredible two-disc set's release in 2007, the Gram Parsons rarities well had been wrung so dry that Amoeba Records co-founder Dave Pinz had to nose around another band's vaults (the notoriously deep archives of the Grateful Dead) for these Flying Burrito Brothers tapes. The material--recorded by Bear Stanley, the Grateful Dead's legendary live engineer--comprises two honky tonk-heavy sets from April 4, 1969 and April 6, 1969, when the Brothers opened for the Dead at San Francisco's Avalon Ballroom.

While the Parsons-era Burritos were never the tightest live band, ARCHIVES VOLUME ONE captures the one short era during which everyone in the band was together, getting along, and feeling great about the music they had discovered. You can hear it in the tracks: Chris Hillman's delicate harmony on "Dark End of the Street," Sneaky Pete Kleinow's pedal steel pyrotechnics on Waylon Jennings's "Sweet Mental Revenge," and Parsons's lovely tenor on a devastating version of "Hot Burrito #1." This is the band's finest hour; it didn't last long, but thankfully for fans, it is thrillingly captured here.

Disc 1 [Live At The Avalon April 4, 1969 (plus bonus tracks)]:
1. Close Up the Honky Tonks
2. Dark End of the Street

10. Mental Revenge
11. Sin City
12. Thousand Dollar Wedding [Demo Recording][#][*]

Just got this beauty the other day. DAMN!! ITS GOOD. Its recordings by Bear Owsley for their APR 1969 Avalon Ballroom engagement. The performances are hot and right on target. the recording is superb w/slight hiss and is HDCD encoded.
