The Criterion Collection rescues the greatest road film ever made from video oblivion on Dec. 11, when 1971's "Two Lane Blacktop" returns to DVD in a special 2-disc set (check out the cool new cover!). Praised by film buffs for years and the only motion picture ever for both James Taylor and Dennis Wilson, it's great to see a deluxe traetment being done. One of the dumbest things I ever did was give my original Anchor Bay special edition tin box version of this movie to a friend as a gift thinking I could replace it easily. Both versions went out of print immediately thereafter and now command a grip in the marketplace. Criterion does a lovely job with all of their releases, so this will be a Christmas gift to myself.

Rock'n'Roll Elitist, I like your avatar! I'm getting this crucial film on DVD, because I've only got it on VHS. Even if it didn't star Dennis Wilson and James Taylor, it would still be a remarkable film. But casting those two guys was a stroke of genius, they are so completely natural in their roles.

Agree GoogaMooga! I have the tin box version but will spring for the new release.

Picked up the new Criterion 2 DVD package of "Two Lane Blacktop".
I have the original DVD by Anchor Bay but this is the one to have. It includes 111 page script (in paperback) and the second disc is so insightful with all its features.

Major finds on disc 2 include an interview with James Taylor who admits after 35 years he has yet to see the movie. Seems he hates to see himself or even hear his own voice as Kris Kristofferson notes in a separate interview. Great interview with James by the way, what a cool guy!

Also of interest, screen tests recently discovered by director Hellman that include Laurie Bird (what a cutie) and James Taylor including one where he just plays and sings alone. Too bad they didn't have anything on Dennis for the screen tests.

Many bonus's on disc 2 from director Monte Hellman where in one he leads a film crew on where scenes were shot (then & now) with insightful rememberances and as for the transfer of the movie on disc one is the best yet.

You guys (and gals) need to add to your list!
