i recently won a used copy of nicolette larson's "live at the roxy" CD on rhino handmade.

the CD was a typical rhino handmade limited edition, and numbered.

mine however, does not have a number, and the bar code is blackened with a sharpie making me think it was a promo copy.

my question:

are rhino handmade promo's worth more because they are un-numbered?

or worth less because they are un-numbered?

thanks,

renny

That's always in the eye of the beholder Renny. Frankly, I can't imagine that most people even pay attention to the number, but that may just be me. I have to believe that all number does anyway is incrementally increase the cost of the package, which in turn just gets passed on to us.

I have several promo copies of Rhino Handmade CDs, and they are not numbered. I doubt it would make a difference to most collectors (especially for the real high-priced items), unless someone specifically wanted #1, say.

Personally, if I buy a limited edition, I like it to be clearly numbered.

Interesting question, renny. I suppose if you had #1 in the limited edition run, that would be something. But if you had #1764, what difference would there be between that and #1279? The key with the Rhino Handmades to me is just being one of those who was actually able to get one of the 5000. However, to me, Collector's Choice Music has cheapened Rhino Hand Made by reissuing their titles so soon after they come out.

I personally don't care if an item has markings or not. I have learned the hard way in 10 years of selling cd's on the internet that many real hardcore collectors seem to feel that ANY promo (or other) marking reduces the value of most cd's (of course unless it's a promo only item)

Ironically, in the days of vinyl, "white label" promos were valued higher by collectors....... Though part of that was because they usually were some of the first copies pressed, before the stamper began to wear.

Does that include CDs where the "promotional" marking was actually printed on the disc as part of the "label?" For instance, some of the Capitol CDs have what looks to be a haphazardly placed "for promotional use only" sticker that's in reality not a sticker, but part of the actual printing of the CD artwork.

:ohyes: Because lately limited edition means limited to what we can sell. For example the Travelling Wilbury's deluxe edition getting reissued agai.

What a ******* joke!!
