Got a realllly early (bare bones) promo copy of the Useless Trinkets comp at 'Rama today. Quite generous at 50 tracks, plus a DVD. A number of interesting covers and even a couple of (previously released) Christmas songs. Cheap enough that I might even buy it again in January, just for the proper packaging.

I absolutely love E's two solo albums (coincidentally, I was just listening to them yesterday). I bought the Eels' first album, Beautiful Freak, but never got into it as much -- it veered a little too much toward heavier alt-rock for my tastes. How have the follow-ups been? Are they more like the old E, or do they continue along the harder-edged path?

C'mon, folks -- no one can give me an "E vs. Eels" comparison?

I can give you an E vs. Eels comparison. E's solo albums always sounded to me more like classic singer-songwriter records. You're right about "Beautiful Freak" coming off as a little more heavy alternative. But the next two albums "Electro-Shock Blues" and "Daisies of the Galaxy" are both remarkable from both a songwriting and sonic perspective. "Souljacker" brings back some of the punk edge, and "Shootenanny!" comes off as slacker classic rock. "Blinking Lights" was a two disc concept record that returned to the delicacy of "Daisies", but comes off as a little precious.

At any rate, if you ever get a chance to see Eels play live, you should not pass it up. I saw them in 2003 touring "Shootenanny!" and they kicked my butt in about a thousand different ways that night.

Thanks, Paul! I'll give one of these two a listen next.

EELS MAN TO PLAY SPECIAL CHURCH SHOW

Eels frontman Mark Everett is to launch his new book 'Things The Grandchildren Should Know' - with a one-off special solo appearance in London next Monday (January 17).

Taking place at the intimate St James' Church in London's Piccadilly, Everett will also be giving the first 200 fans to arrive a free signed copy of the book.

Everett's appearance and book launch comes a week before Eels celebrate their ten year anniversary with the release of two new collections, 'Meet The Eels: Essential Eels Vol 1, 1996-2006' and 'Eels Useless Trinkets: B-Sides, Rarities and Unreleased 1996-2006'.

Tickets for the London church show are available now from
http://www.eelstheband.com/stjames_tickets.htm

Everett will also be playing a series of shows with the Eels from next month. They are set to play:

London, Royal Festival Hall (February 25)
Birmingham, Town Hall (26)
Manchester, Bridgewater Hall (27)
Glasgow, Royal Concert Hall (28)
Gateshead, Sage (March 1)
Brighton, Dome (2)

How does one young man survive the deaths of his entire family and manage to make something worthwhile of his life? In Things The Grandchildren Should Know Mark Oliver Everett tells the story of what it's like to grow up the insecure son of a genius in a wacky Virginia Ice Storm-like family. Left to run wild with his sister, his father off in some parallel universe of his own invention, Everett's upbringing was 'ridiculous, sometimes tragic and always unsteady'. But somehow he manages to not only survive his crazy upbringing and ensuing tragedies; he makes something of his life, striking out on a journey to find himself by channelling his experiences into his, eventually, critically acclaimed music with the Eels. But it's not an easy path. Told with surprising candour, Things The Grandchildren Should Know is an inspiring and remarkable story, full of hope, humour and wry wisdom.

Eels plan to gatecrash Super Bowl

Jan 17, 2008

Eels are aiming to crash this year’s Super Bowl with the shortest advert ever.

The band hope to bag some air during the highlight of the American Football season to plug their new rariities compilation 'Useless Trinkets'.

However with adverts during the broadcast of the match costing around $100,000 per second, the band have told NME.COM they do not expect to clog the airwaves.

At the moment, they are hoping they can afford a single second, which will feature frontman E saying the letter “U”, the first letter of the new album title.

A full version of the ad - with all the letters - will appear online after the game.

Eels and The Who team up for tiny London gig

Jan 18, 2008

The Who’s Pete Townshend made a surprise appearance at Eels’ gig at London’s St James’ Church last night (January 17).

The gig was a one-off solo show by Mark ‘E’ Everett, to mark the release of his new book: ‘Things The Grandchildren Should Know’ and the band's first 'best of' compilation, 'Essential Eels'.

Everett played songs spanning his musical career, including ‘Ugly Love’, ‘Bus Stop Boxer’, ‘I Like Birds’, ‘Flyswatter’ and ‘Grace Kelly Blues’ on either guitar or piano, and invited fans to read from his book between segments of the show.

For the last book reading, Everett invited “Pete” up from the audience, after which The Who’s Pete Townshend climbed on stage to give the reading.

Earlier in the show, Everett had sent a fan back down to the pews after he realised he was highly intoxicated. “How many beers have you had?” Everett asked the fan, named Ryan, to which he replied “Six”. “Get out of here,” Everett said, sending Ryan to his seat.

Everett signed copies of his book after the show for the first 200 fans who had entered the gig to gain special wristbands.

I got a copy of Meet The Eels-Essential Eels CD/DVD when I had lunch today with Bill Levenson. He gave me a copy for Jimbo too though he probably has this already. :)

Even concerts you and Jimbo attend with him? Damm, I am so jealous. Can you imagine the stories he can tell? Hell, imagine, you may have heard many between you and Jimbo peppering him with questions and curios.

He has worked and compiled some of the best comps out on CD!
He use to work at IBM as I did before retirement. When he added the bonus tracks to Emerson, Lake and Powell USA release and put together the "Manticore " boxset I was most appreciated.

You tell him many are in Thanks for work he has done with Polydor and Universal I believe. He and Bill Ignot (Rhino) were responsible for some of the best CD reissues that populate all of our personal collections.

Next time you see him tell him Thanks for the Great work he has done. I have many compilations in my collection done under his supervision. (As many of us do).

Invite him to the board, I am sure he can share some wonderful insights.

Ricik A.

Your Majesty,

My name is Mark Oliver Everett. My friends call me "E". I am the singer in an American rock band called Eels. We will be playing a show at your Royal Festival Hall on the evening of February 25th and I would like to extend an invitation for you to attend our performance. We have played the Festival Hall several times and I've noticed that your royal box is usually empty. I'd like to change that. We have also played your Queen Elizabeth and Royal Albert Halls. I don't think you were at those shows either.

I recently saw the movie ‘The Queen’ and while I know that wasn't actually you in the film, it made me think that I would like you as a person. I'd like you to be one of the people who call me “E”. If you're free February 25th, please come down to the show. It's sold out, but I would be happy to put you on the guest list. I also have a new book, ‘Things The Grandchildren Should Know’, and two new compact disc and DVD collections, ‘Meet The Eels’ and ‘Useless Trinkets’. I think you'd enjoy them and I'd be happy to give you complimentary copies of each, which I will even sign for you after the show.

If you're busy, I understand. But if you can free up your calendar, we'd love to see you there. Thank you for your time, Your Majesty.

Sincerely,

Mark Oliver Everett
aka E
