To make sure there's no misunderstanding, the sarcasm in my previous post was directed towards George W Bush, & Not towards Canadians.

I like Canadians. Wish I could say that about Bush.........................

I just ordered this DVD; cheaper on-line than what the stores up here will want for it.

fyp933,
When I was fortunate enough to be able to talk to Mike Timmins before a show earlier this year, I told him that I hoped that The Trinity Session (and hence the RCA/BMG section of their catalog) would get the Mobile Fidelity treatment. He didn't know if any of that would pass because of all of the legal stuff involved. They were able to get Whites Off Earth Now done because they own that album outright. I'd love for it to happen, but it'll be a higher hurdle to clear if and when it comes to possibly being able to doing it.

Bannings: If you're not nice
This is going into general release on February 26th:

The recording of The Trinity Session was a momentous occasion in, not only, our bands life, but also, our individual lives. The day that the album was recorded, we walked out of the church feeling that we had just participated in something that was much greater than the sum of its parts. The subsequent release of the album and the way that it captured the hearts, minds and souls of so many people in so many different ways, and in so many different parts of the world seemed to indicate that something special did happen in the church that day and, lucky for us, we had a tape deck locked in record. The day after the recording our mother happened to be visiting us while we listened to the playback. After listening for a while she turned to us and said, “your lives will never be the same”…and she was right.

In order to celebrate the 20th anniversary of that very special day we decided to take the risky move of going back to the Church of the Holy Trinity and seeing what twenty years of experience would bring to those same set of songs. Our goal was not to re-do The Trinity Session, but to re-interpret it. In order to give the project an edge we asked along some artists whose own work and lives were in some way affected by Trinity and whose work has also had an affect on our lives and music. Much like the first time around, we kept rehearsal to a minimum. The idea was to cobble together a loose band sound and to let the church and music take over while the tape was running. Ryan Adams, Vic Chesnutt and Natalie Merchant all showed up keen to participate in our little experiment and once again, the church took over.

We couldn’t have dreamed of a better end result for this project. We were all a little astounded at how good things sounded and how easily it was for the eight of us to meld together as a group. The Lamoureux brothers, Pierre and Francois, did an astounding job at capturing the performance on the fly. The DVD looks and sounds beautiful.

[title]Trinity Revisted[/title] is a special document celebrating a special day in our lives. Sometimes its unwise to revisit past glories, but sometimes, that’s just what those glories require….enjoy.

Trinity Revisted is a two disc set. One disc is a CD which plays stereo audio like any other CD. The other disc is a DVD which will work in any DVD player or computer. The performance was shot in High Definition Video and recorded at 96K for the highest audio and visual experience. The audio on the DVD was mixed in stereo as well as 5.1 surround sound.

There is also a bonus documentary included on the DVD which features the band along with Jeff Bird and Peter Moore sitting around, getting drunk and talking about the good ol’ days.

With the 96/24 master, I wish they would do a hybrid SACD. Contrary to RIAA marketing hype, cd's have a limit of 44/16. A STANDARD CD CAN NOT REPRODUCE 96/24, NO MATTER WHAT THE PACKAGING STATES. 96/24 mastering MUST be down sampled for cd. There is likely still a benefit from using the latest equipment (especially current a/d conversion) as compared to 20 year old digital gear, but on cd it's not 96/24.

Of course the dvd can do 96/24, although in my experience, most dvd's choose inferior compressed Dolby sound over true 96/24 LPCM to save room on the disc. I would GUESS that this release will use the 96/24 LPCM on the dvd.

Anyone know the answer to this one-- if ordered online, will this release ship earlier than the general release date of 2/26/08? The site isn't clear about that.

Greg, what's your opinion? Is it worth picking up?

Short answer: Yes, I like it.

Long answer: I'm a big fan of the Cowboy Junkies, so I wouldn't miss a project like this. I think they're one of the most consistent acts around -- they've never released a bad record, and several of them are superb. I'd probably pay to hear Margo Timmins sing nursery rhymes. However, I was a little disappointed with this recording. Everything is beautifully recorded and shot, but the performances don't improve on the originals in any way. What bothers me most, though, is the inclusion of the guest artists, Natalie Merchant, Ryan Adams, and Vic Chesnutt (Jeff Bird has been an auxilliary member of the band for several years). Merchant actually seems to fit pretty well, but when Adams and Chesnutt do lead vocals, it just didn't work for me. I would have preferred to see just the band reinterpreting the songs. I think the guests were added to spice things up a bit, and make it more "special" but I wasn't impressed. All that said, the recording is very good, the performances are very good, the DVD is beautiful and fun to watch, the mood is great, everything is typically very tasteful, and I'm glad I have it. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who isn't a big Junkies fan. I will say, though, that my wife, who was only a mild fan of the band, loved watching the DVD and is now much more interested in the band.

Greg,
It's nice to hear that your wife has been converted. The next thing you've got to do is take her to a show. And then to make it extra special, make sure that you and your wife go and meet Margo after the show is over. She usually hangs out after their shows are done and talks to fans. My admiration for Cowboy Junkies runs deep on many levels. I have a huge amount of respect for them as musicians and as people.

Steve,
Funny you should say that. They're coming here in March, to a small theater. I've never seen them live. We have yet to get a babysitter for our 2 year old, but it's time. I agree with you about the band. They just have so much integrity. They're all about the music; nothing about them is artificial or the least bit commercial. That's why I like to buy from their website, by the way. Not only do I get new releases faster, but I figure I'm supporting the band better by buying directly from them. These are people who we need to keep doing exactly what they're doing.

I just hope Ryan Adams and Vic Chesnutt aren't with them.

Hi Again Greg,
When you buy from their website, the band gets a little bigger cut than they do from standard retail sales. I always order their releases through them. All I can say is "Go to the show"! You won't be disappointed.

I get the Maple Music email newsletter. I didn't know the band was also selling direct.

Geff,
I think their website sales are handled through Maple Music. At least, that's how I bought my stuff. Not sure exactly what the relationship is.

Discorama sold me a Canadian copy of the CD+DVD package a couple weeks ago, but I haven't had a chance to listen to (or watch) it yet.

:ohyes: Their sales and many other Canadian artists are handled by Maple Music. They are a great outfit with very fast shipping.
