"underprivildged by birth on new york's lower east side in summer of august 28th 1917 - overprivilidged by 40 years of experience in every facet of comics" - kirby himself, a snippet of a biography he handwrote for the national cartoonists society
jack kirby is my hero. he's everything to me. Sure, he was the greatest creative talent (imo) that the comic book industry has ever produced, his artwork thrills & excites me like NO ONE else to this day, but there's more to it than that... He was a man of the people, a guy from a tough world, & yet by all accounts (& there are many!) he was a truly GREAT person - never the "big i am" & the comics he produced, with joe simon & stan lee & joe sinnot & mike royer (creative people obviously attract creative people! the list could go on & on!) & the art he produced will NEVER be surpassed.
cheers to matt for this thread.. brilliant! & to brian "over the road" too - one thing we'd all agree on is that there's never too much kirby. rest in piece.
i'll add some scans meself tomorow if thas ok..
i have some real cool stuff, but my favourite piece of kirby art EVER is a tie between his pencill portrait of Moses that hung in his own house...
i gotta post some weird stuff - especially the likes of the scobby doo prototypes he did, the ff storyboards, the later stuff... i've a ton of that stuff & some of it has to be seen to be believed... his last EVER commisioned work is the most STUNNING Star wars art you'll ever see.. a fitting link to the new gods i'll scan that tomorow too
