Stinky Linky Pinky Dinky.
Quote: Today Wizards of the Coast confirms that the new edition will launch in May 2008 with the release of the D&D Player's Handbook(R). A pop culture icon, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS is the #1 tabletop roleplaying game in the world and is revered by legions of gamers of all ages.
...
The 4th Edition rules emphasize faster game play, offer exciting new character options, and reduce the amount of "prep time" needed to run the game. D&D Insider includes a character creator that lets players design and equip their D&D characters, dungeon- and adventure-building tools for Dungeon Masters, online magazine content, and a digital game table that lets you play 24/7 on the Internet — the perfect option for anyone who can't find time to get together. ...
Wizards of the Coast will release two 4th Edition preview books in December and January — Wizards Presents: Classes and Races(TM) and Wizards Presents: Worlds and Monsters(TM). The first live demos of 4th Edition will happen at the D&D EXPERIENCE(TM) gaming convention in Washington, D.C., in February 2008. The full scope of 4th Edition books, miniatures, and adventures will be available in the spring and summer of 2008.

I stopped at second edition. D&D isn't a game I miss playing all that much.

Basic? Hell, I still have my original three 5.5"x8.5" books and the Greyhawk and Blackmoor supplements. And somewhere I've got a copy of Chainmail.

I'm not saying "let's see how far back we can go," I really do prefer the Basic rules over all else before and since. The original rules were cool but lacked polish, First Edition was quirky and fun but wildly inconsistent and not at all streamlined. Hated Second Edition. Third Edition/d20 I actually like, but combat takes forever.
Nostalgia probably plays a part. I got into D&D shortly before the Basic rules came out, but I played with those red Basic books and blue Experts books probably more than any other set of rules.

Agreed. I think Basic was best.
And I AM saying "let's see how far back we can go"...

I remember when D&D was fun.
These days, it sure is a lot of work. Haven't played in about two years at this point, and not consistently for longer. Doesn't help that I was always expected to be the DM. I haven't been a player in a D&D game since the '80s. And that sucks.

Keeping track of time was always a pain in the rear, like casting time and such. If there was an easier way of doing that, and keeping track of the rules as well, it would be much better.
I like the computer versions, but I'm of the opinion that there is a little too much time spent in front of the computer playing games, especially like this, and not enough hang out time actually spending time with your friends.
Because, you know, that actually takes effort...

Arguably. I don't think I did, though. But maybe I did.
I agree about keeping track of time in games. I hated that. I fudged a lot when it came to that sort of thing. Encumbrance, too. Much easier to play it loose and barely logical rather than calculated down to the ounce. "No, you can't carry two sets of plate mail!" But 40 flasks of oil? Sure!

I liked the ruleset that was used for Baldur's Gate II (probably the greatest computer RPG of all time).

That was a tweaked version of Second Edition, right, including kits and all that? Been a while since I played it.

I think so. I know it wasn't the third edition rules, because they made a big deal about using those for Neverwinter Nights.

I've not been a fan of D&D since the days of, oh, the Fiend Folio. The original Fiend Folio. With the githyanki and that crap. We'd moved on to SPI's Dragonquest by that point and stuck with that until the first edition of Rolemaster -- which lasted all of one campaign before we got sick of all the charts. Then it was back to Dragonquest until Fantasy Hero (1st edition) came out, and we stuck with that for a long while.
When 2nd Ed. AD&D came out, I'd long since acquired my "pick the game system for the milieu" attitude that I retain to this day -- if I want to play swashbuckling fantasy, I'll run 7th Sea, if I want to do epic fantasy, I'll run Pendragon, if I want to play urban street fantasy I'll run one of the current World of Darkness games (haven't picked up Changeling: The Lost yet, but I like what I see), and if I want to play classic gaming fantasy, I'll run... well, I don't know what I'll run, frankly. Probably a modified homebrew of the 7th Sea system, using some of the tropes of 2nd edition Legend of the Five Rings, since it has that cinematic quality that I like. And I've modified the magic system, adapting bits of For Faerie, Queen and Country and Castle Falkenstein which suits my world quite well.
And if I want to play a dungeon crawl, I'll fire up Neverwinter Nights and play it on the computer, because frankly tabletop dungeon crawls do not appeal to me whatsoever anymore.

I played some in high school and a few times after college. I remember it being fun but I never got too into it. I just didn't know any people who were that regular at it. This was before every LCS had a regular weekly game. I still have some of the books though. I think it was AD&D 2nd ed.
