This is a touch choice, I like both artists for different reasons and both are about as good as it gets on Superman (I'd also include Schaffenberger). Curt Swan, but in the 70s and 80s, not so much earlier, where he was much more restricted and his art suffered from a certain stiffness because of it.

I like Schaffenberger as well, but wanted this to be between just two guys.

I have to vote Byrne here. He took me, a dyed-in-the-wool Marvel Zombie, and made me not just a Superman fan with his run, but a DC fan.

I can appreciate Swan as one of the greats, but you have to dance with the one that brung ya.

I've come to appreciate Swan's work - heck, I liked it as a kid before I know who creators were - but Byrne was the one who made me really sit up and take notice of Superman. His Superman art of the 1980s had a ton of energy and, like DAC, made me interested in the DC universe in a way I never had been before.

So, Byrne.

I can't make this choice because I love both equally for different reasons.

Oh I know, wasn't suggesting he should have been in the poll, I just wanted to give him a shout-out because he was great. :)

As much as I like Curt Swan's work, I have to say Byrne.

A few years ago, I'd have voted Byrne, yet these days it's Curt Swan for me. While I enjoy Byrne's Superman, I have to give it to Swan for being consistent throughout his career, for drawing as many as 3-4 quality pages a day and defining the character for more than thirty years.

The work of Neal Adams and Jerry Ordway on Superman are worthy of note, as well.

I'm also looking forward to Gary Frank's Christopher Reeve-styled Superman set to debut in October, I believe...

I went with Byrne on this one, but only because I wasn't given the option of either Dan Jurgens, or Jerry Ordway.

Luckily McGuinness wasn't on here...

Byrne. His was the definitive Superman for me, since my reading of anything DC was sporadic at best until about a decade ago.

I wouldn't have read alot of Superman if it wasn't for Byrne, before that I would occassionally page through an issue.
