I notice that a 4-disc collection of Manfred Mann's EMI recordings, called Down The Road Apiece (Their EMI Recordings 1963 - 1966), is to be released in August.

Has anyone seen the track listing for this collection?

The band was started by Mike Hugg and Manfred. They were jazz musicians. While jazz was fulfilling to play it didn’t fill full the wallet so they decided to form an R’n’B band. They recruited a group of similarly under-employed jazz players and then held auditions for a singer or “shouter” as it was described to Paul Jones who eventually got the job. The line up was completed by Mike Vickers and Tom McGuiness. Jones’s harmonica gave the group their distinct sound and they soon became one of Britain’s leading bands of the 60’s. They hit the top 10 regularly with hits like ‘5-4-3-2-1’, ‘Do Wah Diddy Diddy’, ‘Sha La La’, Come Tomorrow, ‘If You Gotta Go, Go Now’ and ‘Pretty Flamingo’.

• This 4CD career retrospective contains their EMI Recordings from 1963-1966
• Sleevenotes written by Tom McGuiness
• It includes their first session done as a commercial test
• Package contains sessionography and illustrated discography
• The collection has 7 previously unreleased recordings alongside other rarities and their hits.

It is very nearly the complete EMI Recordings of Manfred Mann, except the long version(with keyboard solo) of "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" and the Canada-Only alternate take of "She Needs Company"(interestingly, the only EMI Manfred Mann track for which the multitrack tape exists).
I assisted Manfred Mann official biographer Greg Ruso with some dubs from 7" & 12" singles used on the 1998 Earth Band remasters, and was given access to unreleased material from throughout Mann's career. Most of the unreleased EMI material in my collection will appear n the new box, except "Why Should We Not"(Takes 2 & 3,both breakdown takes),Ron Furmanek's 1990 stereo remix of the Canada-only alternate take of "She Needs Company" & the stereo mix of the long version of "Do Wah Diddy Diddy".
Producer John Burgess was one of those EMI producers that didn't save multitrack tapes, hence 14 further unreleased EMI Manfred Mann tracks(logged as having been recorded) have,in all likelyhood perished, unless mixes are someday found.(not likely). In the years since the 1990's vault searches at EMI,none of those 14 selections have been found. It means that my homemade CD-R "Box" is nearly definitive. The alternate "The One in The Middle" is the only track which I don't already have.Be cautioned that the unreleased song "All Your Love" in the new box set is a very rough demo.In fact,on the tape that I've got, engineer Norman Smith says,"All Your Love,RM1,take one. This is a rough remix for demo purposes only."

My favorite version of the band was the Nightengales & Bombers album, with Mick Rogers on guitar & vocals. I have no idea why he left. Even though the follow up to Nightengales (Roaring Silence) was their biggest seller, I found it to be a huge disapointment. A few years ago I found a Mick Rogers solo cd; it was also unfortunately disapointing. My 2nd fav MM cd is Chance. According to AMG, Rogers was on several MM albums prior to Nightengales. I haven't heard them.

Part of the reason for Mick Rogers' departure from Manfred Mann's Earth Band, was because of Rogers' ill-fated attempt to join Genesis,as replacement for Peter Gabriel.Of the vocalists that Genesis considered,Rogers was the only one who tried recording with the group. But the backing tracks (for the "A Trick of The Tail" album)were already recorded, and the keys weren't right for Rogers,so ultimately Phil Collins did the vocal tracks....and the rest is history.

I knew this box was coming, but I didn't expect it to be the complete recordings from '63 to '66. Great news!

It's slightly frustrating that the box stops 3 selections short of being the complate recordings. The 3 omissions may be at the request of the group. The film soundtrack version of "My Little Red Book"(available of Rykodisc's soundtrack CD of "What's New Pussycat?") is the version where Burt Bacharach commandeers the session and plays the keyboards himself, hence no participation from Manfred. The long version of "Do Wah Diddy Diddy"(available on several UK & U.S.A. compilation CD's) contains the keyboard solo that Manfred felt disrupted the flow of the song. The reason for the omission of the Canada-Only alternate take of "She Needs Company" is a mystery.

Phil -

Was this 1990 remix ever released? If so, on which compilation did it appear? And thanks for sharing your unique insights!

No,the 1990 stereo remix of the alternate "She Needs Company" has not been commercially released. But I've got it in my personal collection. The original mono mix hasn't been on CD either.

Bumping this thread with updated release date info ~ Amazon is now showing this 4-CD set as coming out on August 20th, CD Universe shows it as September 25th. CDU has also dropped the pre-order price to about $25 less than Amazon, so this might be a good time to grab it whether it's coming out this month or next:

Didn't Jack Bruce play bass on that, pre-Cream?

Phil,

I see that "My Little Red Book" is indeed on Disc Three of the forthcoming EMI box; is this an alternate version of the song on which Manfred plays piano, i.e. are there 2 Manfred recordings of the song, one with & one without Burt on piano?

Thanks & best,

Joe

Yes,there ARE two Manfred Mann versions of "My Little Red Book".The one with Burt Bacharach on Piano is on the Rykodisc soundtrack CD for the movie "What's New Pussycat?"

Yes,Jack Bruce was on both versions of "She Needs Company" and all other 1966 EMI Manfred Mann recordings. He's also on two Fontana tracks "Let it Be Me" & "I Wanna to Be Rich".After the first Fontana session,Manfred asked Jack Bruce to give Mike D'abo a ride home.During the ride,Bruce(who believed he had just played as a sessionman on a D'Abo solo session) asked D'abo,"So what's your involvement with Manfred Mann?",and D'Abo said "I'm the new lead singer." to which Bruce said,"Well in that case,I'm off to form a group with Eric Clapton & Ginger Baker!"

Heads up y'all, CD Universe has actually begun shipping this box, so it did come out already:

http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.a ... m=lk_imwan

(CDU's price is still about $25 less than Amazon's, which is a moot point anyway since Amazon doesn't have it in stock yet ...)

If you're willing to wait until next week, Amazon Canada is offering this for only CAN$30.99. With shipping to the US it will come to CAN$40.97, but that's still only about $38.50 US - much less than anywhere else I've seen:

Well,I've now got the EMI/UK 4-CD box set "Manfred Mann-Down The Road Apiece",and, while I'm pleased to report that the set has excellent sound quality,it is not without problems.
By mistake, the compilers use work-in-progress undubbed rough mixes of "Now You're Needing Me" & "Cock-A-Hoop".These mixes lack the background vocals.
While the set presents both the stereo & mono mixes of the instrumental "Mr.Anello"(they are different takes),once again,EMI/Uk omit the guitar intro when presenting the stereo take.(the only place to get the stereo take with the intro intact is on a 1990's EMI U.S.A. "two-fer" Cd of "The Manfred Mann Album"/"Five Faces of Manfred Mann(U.S. version) where it appears amongst the bonus tracks.
While the compilers of the new 4-CD set clearly intended to use stereo versions wherever possible, and present both the stereo & mono mix where the stereo & mono version were different takes,"I Got You Babe","(I Can't Get No)Satisfaction","She Needs Company","What Have I Done Wrong?" & "What Am I Doing Wrong?" are needlessly presented in mono sound, despite the fact that musically identical stereo mixes exist and have been presented on other EMI/UK CD's.Worse yet,a mastering fault lops off the first half second of "(I Can't Get No)Satisfaction)"
The packaging is minimal;a modified double jewel box which hold 4 discs. The set deserved more deluxe packaging that would have permitted more extensive liner notes.
Still, with the exception of the problems noted above, the set presents most of the tracks with the best sound yet.
However, there was adequate room on the discs to have included the Canada-only alternate "She Needs Company",the film soundtrack version of "My Little Red Book",and the extended "Do Wah Diddy Diddy".To stop three tracks short of the complete released EMI recordings is silly & regrettable.
As I previously reported, their producer apparently didn't save multitracks, and so 14 unreleased selections which weren't mixed down no longer exist.(sigh)

Frustrating news, but I don't see another box or extensive reissue campaign happening again in physical CD format. Perhaps that 4 CD EMI originals box and sundry CD's is the way to go?

Yes,the "Four Manfred Mann Originals" box(if you can find it) is highly recommernded. It contains his four Ascot/United Artists album in miniature replica album covers. The albums have been recreated from original UK master tapes, and whenever humanly possible, stereo mixes are used, meaning that there are more stereo tracks than on the original 1960's vinyl. As I recall, all but 3 or 4 tracks are stereo, and those 3 or 4 tracks genuinely don't exist in stereo. Those tracks are presented in pure mono. This "Four Manfred Mann Originals" box is a fine place to get the E.P. tracks in stereo.
