It's possible a tornado did it. But if the cars weren't affected I have my doubts. A very strong wind is just as likely a culprit unless people have photos or video of an actual tornado.

Tornadoes don't just occur in the midwest. There's no inherent reason why one CAN'T occur in the NYC area. It just doesn't happen as often in some regions as in others.

I agree. As long as the conditions are right it could occur. It seems odd no one actually witnessed it if a tornado did happen. Unless I missed something.

I'm not very far from Brooklyn as the crow flies, and we get tornados here from time to time. They tend to be very weak, but they're enough to do some minor damage.

From the [latest version of the] web page:
Quote: UPDATE: The National Weather Service confirmed nearly 12 hours later that in fact, it was an EF2 tornado that touched down in Brooklyn, packing estimated winds of 110-135 miles per hour.
I figure if the National Weather Service says it was a tornado, then it was probably a tornado. Note that tornadoes do vary in size and power, and the fact that the cars weren't apparently affected (at least until a tree landed on one) doesn't mean there wasn't a tornado of some sort. Plus trees & branches up off the ground could well have experienced stronger winds than cars & other objects on the ground.

Yeah. Seems to have been a tornado.

I'm still amazed more cars weren't damaged.

A tornado whipped through downtown near where I live back about 15 years or so. Power lines and trees were damaged, a few windows broken, no real damage to vehicles or structures, other than the usual trailer park (every area has one I guess). There are a huge range of strength to tornadoes.
