It wasn't all peace, love, and drugs that made San Francisco the fulcrum of the burgeoning hippie scene in the mid '60s. According to this sprawling 77-track, four-disc set--the third in Rhino's ongoing Nuggets series--it was the music that nurtured and helped create Haight-Ashbury. This expansive package succeeds in presenting the disparate acts involved in that cultural revolution through a detailed aural exploration. Sure, the usual suspects like the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Janis Joplin are here, but it's the obscurities and oddities--some never previously available and many more extremely difficult to find--that provide intimate glimpses into the crevices, building blocks, and influences of what was later dubbed the "San Francisco Sound." The platters are broken down into rough category/chronological groupings, with disc three focusing on 1967, the Summer of Love whose 40th anniversary this box's release celebrates. Even there, acts such as the Ace of Cups, the Mystery Trend, and the Loading Zone fly way below the radar. There's lots to absorb, even for genre enthusiasts, but compiler Alex Palao's extensive, track-specific liner notes provide concise yet vital contextual background to guide the listener through a wildly diverse landscape that runs from the British Invasion-styled pop of the Beau Brummels and the soft folk of the Youngbloods to the furious garage psychedelia of the Count Five and the eardrum-bursting, proto-metal power rock of Blue Cheer. --Hal Horowitz

Product Description
Rhino's Love Is The Song We Sing: San Francisco Nuggets 1965-1970 4-CD Box Set Celebrates The 40th Anniversary Of "The Summer Of Love" Forty years ago the world turned its ears toward San Francisco as a wave of talented bands gave birth to the American counterculture. On August 27, Rhino remembers that magical confluence of time and place with LOVE IS THE SONG WE SING: SAN FRANCISCO NUGGETS 1965-1970, a 4-CD box set of classics and rarities from the golden age of Golden State rock. SAN FRANCISCO NUGGETS is the last word on one of popular music's defining regional scenes -- though as scenes go, the music it produced is remarkably diverse. The 77 tracks heard here share little beyond an artistic adventurousness long encouraged in the City by the Bay (which was a magnet for free thinkers from the days of the Beats. Seismic Rumbles, as the first CD of SAN FRANCISCO NUGGETS is subtitled, maps the fault lines separating the pop sounds of the early 1960s from more adventurous rock inspired by the arrival of The Beatles and Bob Dylan. By mid-decade, most of the pieces were in place for what would soon be called "The San Francisco Sound," and Disc 1 features the pre-Grateful Dead group The Warlocks, the original line-up of the Jefferson Airplane, a pre-hit Grass Roots, influential existentialists The Charlatans, and Country Joe & The Fish posing that timeless question "And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for?"

From the shape of the picture, do we think this is one of Rhino's book-style boxes (such as the Faces set or ROCKIN' BONES) rather than a large box a la all previous Nuggets releases?

I got the promo sampler last week at 'Rama. It's front-loaded with the more well-known acts: Grateful Dead, JA, Country Joe, etc. I'll be picking this up for the more obscure acts, at least some of of which I haven't heard before.

To be honest, outside of the Airplane and early Santana, this was never my favorite genre/period in the history of pop music. I have a better appreciation for it now.

This whopper was one of the ones involved in my August 28th pre-orders that tried hard to break me as far as my wallet goes. I'm really happy that so many obscure tunes are on this and that the big names have songs that are not what one would ordinarily expect.

This does look tasty - too bad of the release date - can't use the 40% borders that expires @ end of aug.
No doubt the Dark Star wil be the 'single'
I assume the same for the QMS's "Who Do You Love."

Must have.

Is that a typo, or is there really a 40% Borders coupon out there? If there is, can someone please post the link or the coupon image?

Not a typo, just poor memory (sorry Ven)...its 30%...have the print out...pulled from our General topics...just looked again for it, did not see on brief reviewreview...(These should be stickied until expiration)...

my print out is dated 7/22 - and it was out there for a few days....

I got my copy of the new Nuggets box yesterday at 'Rama. Boy, did Rhino do a beautiful job with this. Basically a coffee-table book chronicling the SF 60s scene, with interesting essays, pages and pages of fantastic photos, and detailed commentary about each and every track. The typeface used even mimics the style of classic Rolling Stone magazine. I'm discovering a whole bunch of great music I have never heard before.

I fear these elaborate box sets will go the way of the dinosaurs before long. In today's market, how many can Rhino expect to sell? If you have any interest at all, find enough in your budget to grab a copy.

I saw this in AKA Music in Philly this afternoon, it certainly looked spectacular. I think I'll use a birthday gift certificate at Amazon for it.

Let me second Jimbo's recommendation wholeheartedly! This is a gorgeous set. My initial disappointment that the box wasn't in the same style as the other Nuggets boxes quickly disappeared as soon as I opened the book -- it's a lavish, comprehensively-annotated, wonderfully-designed collection of music. We have to get the word out to Rhino to keep these babies coming, and as our man Jimbo pointed out, the only way to do that is by picking one up! I can't imagine anybody here being disappointed with this latest Rhino crown jewel. (Interesting that in some of the all-too-numerous reports about the death of the CD, some pundits think that sets like this will be the only CDs that DO survive -- in other words, CDs will become expensive niche products for collectors while the masses have their downloads. While I hope that certainly never happens, I wouldn't mind box sets like this staying around for the long haul!!)

Mine should be arriving Monday, I ordered it from Rhino directly and they are providing a free Rhino T-Shirt and a DVD which is a 30 minute doc on the making of the boxset. Both shirt and DVD are Rhino exclusives.

Only gripe, where's Lee Michaels?

And Jimbo, you beat me again, I got to have my indie contacts get me a promo samplier to go along with the box.

Yes. "Remastering: Dan Hersch, Bill Inglot & Dave Schultz at Digiprep."

Now we know what Dave Schultz has been doing since retiring from the Philadelphia Flyers.

Thanks for the coupon...since so many mentioned having the box I thought it had been released when I went to Borders on Monday...
could not go empty-handed...ended up with the long desired "Rockin' Bones" and yesterday my co-worker picked up the SF Nuggets for me (which they had on Monday, but the best they'd do is hold it for me.)

Sweet! Thanks again Stevef

I got my copy of the box in the mail today. The photos in the book left me speechless. They are just marvelous. I would love for the picture inside the front cover to be made into an affordable print of some kind. That thing makes me want to hang it up and proudly display it somewhere in my house. I can't wait to eventually dive in and listen to this baby. Since I used to breath Bay Area air from back in that time, I know it's going to be quite a wonderful journey going through these CDs.

I saw this set during a visit to an ICE friend. It is gorgeous so I've ordered a copy for myself too.

This is a spectacular set. They really did this right. The sound from the tracks I sampled is immaculate.

I have one tiny little carp. I don't love having to scrape the playing side of the disc along the inside cover to get it out.

Schultz has done some excellent work. I am hoping Saleski, Hound Kelly and Kindrachuk have also found jobs.
