Here are the details for Song Remains the Same....:

Slated for a simultaneous release, Warner Home Video debuts brand-new DVD editions of "The Song Remains The Same", now for the first time with all 14 songs from the original concert. The DVD features newly remixed and remastered sound, 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound, and boasts more than 40 minutes of added bonus material, including never-before-released performance footage of "Over The Hills And Far Away" and "Celebration Day"; plus performances of "Misty Mountain Hop" and "The Ocean"; a rare 1976 BBC interview with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page; vintage TV footage from the Drake Hotel robbery during the New York concert stand; and a Cameron Crowe radio show. The discs will be available as follows:

* Deluxe Edition DVD
* Deluxe Edition HD DVD and Blu-ray
* Limited Collector's Edition – 2-disc set includes collectible vintage T-shirt with original album artwork design, soundtrack CD, lobby cards, reproductions of original premiere invites, tour schedule, and more

"We have revisited 'The Song Remains The Same'," says Jimmy Page, "and can now offer the complete set as played at Madison Square Garden. This differs substantially from the original soundtrack released in 1976, and highlights the technical prowess of Kevin Shirley, who worked with us on 'How The West Was Won'. When it comes to 'The Song Remains The Same', the expansion of the DVD and soundtrack are as good as it gets on the LED ZEPPELIN wish list."

"The Song Remains The Same" track listing:

Disc One:

01. Rock And Roll
02. Celebration Day
03. Black Dog (including Bring It On Home)*
04. Over The Hills*
05. Misty Mountain Hop*
06. Since I've Been Loving You*
07. No Quarter
08. The Song Remains The Same
09. Rain Song
10. The Ocean*

Disc Two:

01. Dazed And Confused
02. Stairway To Heaven
03. Moby Dick
04. Heartbreaker*
05. Whole Lotta Love

* Not on original soundtrack release

OK, I'd appreciate clarification here--what will be on CD and what will be on DVD?

My first post includes the tracklisting of the Mothership 2-CD set. There's going to be a deluxe edition which includes a bonus DVD as well, but it hasn't yet been announced what's going to be on that DVD.

musicdav24's second post has the tracklist for the expanded Song Remain The Same DVD reissue, and he says there will also be a reissue of the audio CD soundtrack of this film.

A Deluxe Edition and a Collector's Edition? Why do they do this to me?

How does the track line-up compare to the Early Years and Later Years comps already on the market?

OK, the way i read the article in today's USA today was that there was going to be a deluxe edition DVD, with bonus material, but the USA article did not mention a CD at all.

but then again, they had no mention of a "collector's edition", which seeems to be the only place a CD can be found.

i'm not real good at keeping track of this sort of thing, because i don't buy best of/greatest hits if they don't have something new or unreleased on them.

will this releases put led zepellin into "doors territory? they have to be close.

Actually, Zeppelin has been comparatively restrained about gouging their fans. While Page's early 90's audio upgrades were originally available only via an expensive boxed set, the collector now has a choice in terms of how they want to collect Zep's studio output--either on two boxed sets totalling 6 CD's, the 10-disc set, or the individual albums on CD. All of these discs are still in print, and none of them have been re-upgraded Doors-style in well over a dozen years.

As for greatest hits packages, it also wasn't until the 1990's that Zeppelin finally put together a "best-of" compilation, the first being the "Remasters" import, and then the two 1999 "Early/Latter Days" packages. (As with both of those packages, "Mothership" appears to contain nothing unreleased--I believe some versions of "Remasters" included a radio promo/interview CD)

As for other unique Zeppelin performances, the "BBC Sessions" and the "How The West Was Won" packages both contained entirely new material unavailable on other Zeppelin releases, the lone exception being "Travelling Riverside Blues" on the BBC package.

The reason I'm asking about the "Song Remains The Same" CD reissue is that it was apparently the only original Zeppelin album not remastered by Page during the early 90's, and I'm wondering if it will also contain the extra live songs that will apparently be on the DVD. The track listing above appears to be for the CD--I don't think "Celebration Day" was included in the film, and "Black Dog was not on the album. If this is the case, this will be the first-ever reissue of an original Zeppelin album with bonus tracks.

I look forward to the CD for The Song Remains The Same, I guess. Any new previously unreleased Zeppelin is good, I suppose. But I wish Jimmy would get busy on his solo career. Do you ever get the impression his dabbling in the past is keeping him from moving forward?

Link over to the story from today's KLIZ website report and the official Rhino announcement says that the DVD portion of Mothership will be taken from Led Zeppelin DVD-the one we all already have.
You know what? I'm going to pick up Mothership just to listen to how, soundwise, the tracks are approached from this time around. I hope it's a harbinger for individual album remasters (with 5.1's-I can pray). I will put in for the Limited Collector's Edition of The Song Remains The Same.
This Zeppelin news took me a little by surprise even though I knew Song Remains The Same was eventually coming. I just hope the early Fillmore West show still eventually comes out on CD. Obviously, Jimmy has been busy lately.

Led Zeppelin Readies Fall Reissue Bonanza

Led Zeppelin

July 27, 2007, 2:25 AM ET

Jonathan Cohen, Akron, Ohio

Led Zeppelin fans will have a lot to celebrate this fall thanks to the release of three new titles in multiple configurations. First up on Nov. 13 via Atlantic/Rhino is a two-disc, 24-track best-of, "Mothership." A deluxe reissue of the soundtrack to the 1976 concert film "The Song Remains the Same" with previously unreleased material and a new DVD edition of that movie will arrive Nov. 20 via Atlantic/Rhino and Warner Home Video, respectively.

"Mothership," tracks for which were chosen by surviving members Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, represents all eight of the band's studio albums. In addition to a two-disc set, the album will also be available in both "deluxe" and "collector's" editions with a DVD featuring varied live content from the previously released "Led Zeppelin DVD." A 4-LP vinyl package will also be sold.

As for the "The Song Remains the Same" soundtrack, it now sports six songs not included on the original album: "Black Dog," "Over the Hills and Far Away," "Misty Mountain Hop," "Since I've Been Loving You," "The Ocean" and "Heartbreaker." The album and film were recorded during a July 1973 stand at New York's Madison Square Garden.

"The Song Remains the Same" DVD includes all 14 songs from the original concert for the first time plus previously unreleased performances of "Over the Hills and Far Away," "Celebration Day," "The Ocean" and "Misty Mountain Hop." Rounding out the bonus items are a 1976 BBC interview with Plant and band manager Peter Grant and contemporary footage from the robbery at New York's Drake Hotel during the MSG run.

Beyond a standard DVD, the film will be sold in both HD DVD and Blu-ray formats, as well as a limited collector's edition that includes the soundtrack, a T-shirt with the original album art and reproductions of memorabilia from the era.

All the catalog activity gives further heft to rumors Plant, Page and Jones will reunite to perform at a proposed Ahmet Ertegun tribute concert this fall in London. Although no details have been announced, the group is also said to be mulling offers to tour under the Led Zeppelin name in 2008 with the late John Bonham's son Jason filling in on drums.

Here is the track list for "Mothership":

Disc One:
"Good Times Bad Times"
"Communication Breakdown"
"Dazed and Confused"
"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You"

This reminds me ... I wonder what happened to that Led Zeppelin IV deluxe edition I read about a few years ago. Was it just rumour?

I read different reports on this. Jimmy was said to be considering it, but another article claimed he wasn't...and when asked about it... Jimmy said there were no unreleased tracks left in the vaults.

The new "Song Remains The Same" DVD is going to the top of my shopping list this fall. And hopefully these releases will be followed by a full-scale remastering of the Zeppelin catalog. :yahoo:

eddie,

if i may ask:

how many times do you want the zepellin catalog to be remastered? they already did one for sure, possibly two (i don't know if the big box set with all the albums was re-remastered after the first box set was remastered,or not)

renny,

The big box set with all the albums is the same mastering as the two box sets. It was released at the same time as Boxed Set II, which included the remainder of the album tracks that the first box set didn't.

Personally, the compilation does nothing for me. I've got both box sets, so why would I need to buy a comp?? None of the Zeppelin comps have had anything new to offer, so I never bothered with them.

Now, the prospect of expanded Song Remains The Same reissues is intriguing. I will still hold on to my original CD and DVD issues, so I can have the originals. I wonder - are these new versions going to replace the standard versions??

so they have only been remastered once since the original
cd's, not twice?

thanks

I'm pretty sure (though not 100 percent) that there's been only one Zeppelin remastering. And I'm definitely sure there are some people out there who would like to see another remastering, if only so that they get the sound "right."

Have I taught you nothing, my padawan? :o

BTW, that publisher's promo 3-CD minibox that I got a few years ago has its own unique mastering job. To me, it sounds "hotter" than the remastered CDs.

Here is my understanding (please, correct me if I am wrong):

1. All ten of the original Zeppelin albums appeared on CD back in the 1980's with the analog-to-digital disclaimer.

2. In 1990, Jimmy Page remastered much of the Zepplin catalog for the 4-CD boxed set. It included three unrelased songs and one previously unavailable B-side. None of the original albums were upgraded at this time

3. In 1992, a set entitled "Led Zeppelin Remasters" was released, apparently "only available through this special TV offer!". It contained 2 discs of remasters from the 4-CD set, and a third "interview" disc that sounded a lot more like more like a recycled radio promo disc.

3. All of the remaining Zeppelin studio recordings that were NOT included on the first 4-CD boxed set were remastered by Page and included on 1993's "Boxed Set Two", which also contained another unreleased song.

4. Both boxed sets were combined in 1993 to create the 10-CD "Complete" box, which also included four of the five bonus tracks from the two boxed sets.

5. The following year, still using the same Page remasters, the albums were released individually, finally upgrading the original mid-80's discs. None of the five bonus tracks, however, were included on any of these 1994 discs.

6. I have yet to find any mention of any remastering done on either the "Early Days" or "Latter Days" compilations, or the forthcoming "Mothership". These early 90's masters by Page are apparently still the default Zeppelin studio masters.

7. Apparently all of the original studio recordings were remastered four or five years ago as part of a Japanese mini-sleeve release. Whether or not these remasters sound better than the early 1990 Page remasters, I have no idea. I'm one of those idiots who steers clear of the Hoffman boards, lest I be publicly branded as an audiotard.

8. The bastard stepchild of Zeppelin releases has always been the soundtrack to "The Song Remains The Same"--back in the early 90's, I even seem to recall it stated that Page did not consider the album to be part of the band's official canon, and thus was not remastered at that time along with the rest of the bands output. It may have been remastered for the above-mentioned Japan reissue, but if so, not by Page.

Remember--Page produced all of these original albums in the studio. If anybody thinks that "they" (meaning Page) didn't get them "right", I'd certainly like to hear their reasoning.
