The Leader is cast, along with some details about the film.

Quote:
And Marvel’s The Incredible Hulk adds another cast member, this time, Tim Blake Nelson (Syriana), who will be playing The Leader, the Hulk’s super-intelligent, gamma-irradiated foe, this according to The Hollywood Reporter.

From the trade:

Nelson will play a scientist named Samuel Sterns. In Hulk lore, Sterns, aka "The Leader," is one of the Hulk's major antagonists, a menial worker in a chemical research plant who is bombarded with gamma radiation. He emerges from his accident not only green-skinned but also superintelligent, with an oversized brain.

Nelson joins a cast which already includes Edward Norton (Banner), Liv Tyler (Betty Ross), Tim Roth (Emil Blonsky/the Abomination) and William Hurt (General Ross).

The film is directed by Louis Leterrier from a script by Zak Penn. The film is slated to open domestically June 13, 2008.

Are they going to call him "Leader" or avoid using his name because it's silly? :) This movie has a lot of work ahead to pull itself out of the shadow of the mostly crap previous film...but it also has to have as awesome Hulk in action scenes as the previous film! Way too early to judge.

Norton, Roth, and Hurt give the film a lot of credibility. And I don't mind if they don't use names. Venom is never called that in Spider-Man 3 and it didn't bother me.

I kind of liked Sam Elliott as Ross in the first movie, even though he's much thinner than the character as drawn. Not sure how I feel about Hurt.

Nelson seems like a safe bet for Stearns. He's a quirky little dude. I wonder if he'll get the classic elongated Leader head, or the veiny McFarlane Leader head? (Or neither...)

This sounds promising to me. I take it this is a reboot, or hasn't that been confirmed?

I believe they've said it's pretty much just a recast sequel. So, no new origin or anything like that. The story starts with Banner on the run and goes from there.

Cool. Thanks, Monk.

That actually sounds really good. Although the 'origin story' is a beloved comic book convention, I don't think it works so well in movies. You can do an origin in brief during the credits, or explain via flashback, or just mention it in passing. I think the first FF movie could have done without the lengthy explanation of their beginnings - they could've referred to 'the accident in space' or whatever.

This type of thing was done at the start of Spider-Man 2 - They used Alex Ross' paintings to recap the events of the first movie, and it worked beautifully, I thought. I think if they'd tried something similar with the first FF film, the audience would've 'got it' and there would have been room for more of an actual storyline,

I'd love to see more superhero films just jump right into the action and either get the origin out of the way during the credits or do a quick flashback. Ghost Rider took about half an hour or more before we saw the character. His origin? Made a deal with the devil and got screwed. It's that simple. Audiences don't need every single detail spelled out.

They should just scrap the whole first movie and do his real origin in flashbacks.

I think if they refrain from mentioning the events of the first movie in too much detail, that could only be a good thing. :)

Unless the film is retro, I don't see how a gamma bomb test gone wrong with a random teenager wandering on to ground zero, and the head scientist getting caught in the blast would work. The lab accident works, as long as they don't mention the genetic engineering bit from the first film.

Really? 'Cause I could make it work, even in the here-and-now.

The US hasn't done above-ground testing of bombs in decades. Something that was pretty common in the 60s when the character was introduced would be something very uncommon and unfamiliar today.

Yeah, the exploding frog, the nanotechnology, the gamma dogs...all these things are best forgotten. He's been in an accident, he's the Hulk, and that's it.

I can't help but think, since the Leader and the Abomination are involved, that the whole can of gamma-enhanced worms may be opened up again. Clearly, there's going to be another lab accident involving the same nanites/gamma radiation/things-that-make-frogs-explode type of stuff that created the Hulk to begin with.

They could sidestep that and have an accident involving a blood or tissue sample taken from Banner or the Hulk (since he was imprisoned during the first film, and they were running tests on him), being injected into people as part of some experiment or whatever. That might work...even though they may have to risk mentioning the gamma-poodle *shudder*.

I hope that Sterns stays Sterns rather than becoming the Leader and giving the Hulk two villains to square off again. Hopefully they're just seeding for the next one.

Some do. and even then they don't get it ;)

Depends if the origin is interesting. Spider-Man's is. Hulk's gamma blast to me is, great visual and the sacrifice is important, but not as done in the first movie. The FF's origin is less interesting. Sometimes I think they speed through origins too quickly and the audience doesn't get the full impact.

Other times take too long

The lab accident the way presented took all the power out of the origin. and took away a great visual.

I hope he does fight both the Leader and the Abomination. Hell, I hope the Bi-Beast does a cameo.

I'm actually excited about this. After the disappointment I felt over the last one, this new Hulk movie does sound like an improvement.

I usually dislike multiple villains in superhero movies, but.... the Leader and Abomination would be great.

They gaffed the first movie pretty much entirely, but let's not go back. Move forward. The origin (lacklustre as it was) is done.
