Apparently Lulu's ATCO recordings are being released on a 2-CD set from Rhinohandmade in the UK. Release date is September 10, 2007. Here is a link, but there is not yet a track listing or artwork.

Updated thread title with the new UK release date. ~ Linda

The back story to "The Atco Sessions" involves a diverse cast. Lulu recorded her first album "New Routes" during the autumn of 1969 in Muscle Shoals, Alabama with the legendary house band in attendance: Duane Allman, Eddie Hinton, Jimmy Johnson and Cornell Dupree on guitars, Barry Beckett on keyboards, David Hood on bass and Roger Hawkins on drums. Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees, who was married to Lulu at the time is in referenced on "Marley Purt Drive", and her version is a cracking cover of one of the Gibbs brothers' best songs. The evergreen "Mr. Bojangles" gets a major re-working with Allman's bluesy guitar licks complimenting Lulu perfectly. Other album highlights include "Feelin' Allright" and "Dirty Old Man". Re-convening with Atlantic honchos/producers Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, and Arif Mardin at Criteria Studios in Miami in the spring of 1970, she was matched with another top-notch backing band; the Dixie Flyers with vocalists the Sweet Inspirations, and the Memphis Horns. These sessions became her 1970 album "Melody Fair" and included compositions by Gary Bonds, Leiber & Stoller, Randy Newman, and Bacharach/David. Also included on this Collector's Edition are non-album single sides, funky, previously unreleased tracks from the Miami sessions and an Italian-only single "Povera Me". Housed in a deluxe "Collector's" package featuring rarely-seen photos and contemporary sleeves and memorabilia, the liner notes feature commentaries by Lulu herself.

I wonder if this is a limited edition like the reissues by Rhinohandmade in the US.

I ordered this set and The Strawbs NY 75 from Amazon UK today. The total came to around $46.00, including shipping.
Ordering these from Amazon US would have been around $92.
Wow, what a difference!. These will ship next week.

BUMP with an update ~ the American sites are now showing this with a release date of tomorrow, November 13th. Amazon USA's price is still ridiculous, Amazon UK's price has risen by 2 pounds but is still the best, and CD Universe (if you're more comfortable ordering from a domestic source) has dropped their price to $31.55 which is fairly close to Amazon UK's price.

I have had this on order repeatedly from the UK since September, I think, and it keeps getting delayed... The item on Amazon UK now says it ships in "7-10 days", while Virgin Mega online states it is usually despatched in "2 to 4 weeks", leading me to believe the release date has changed once again... Does anyone know if there really is such a thing as Rhino Handmade in the UK, or is this going to be an American Rhino Handmade release that will be imported to the UK? Anyway, just curious as to whether there have been any other releases by Rhino Handmade UK...

Amazon UK's latest dispatch tells me to expect delivery 11-19 to 11-21.
This is the 3rd change since I ordered it. I couldn't find any info on any Rhino Handmade UK.

I received a notification that my copy shipped yesterday. I'll report back if & when it arrives! Looks like a great set, like much of Rhino UK's product.

Mine just shipped from Amazon UK today.

Y'all ever seen this? It pre-dates Lulu's Atco era, but it's never been commercially released in any audio format AFAIK ~ it's a cover of The Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There" (with the gender changed of course), and the instrumentation sounds very much like an unreleased Decca session with her group the Luvvers rather than a generic "television orchestra":

Great find, Linda!

My copy of the Lulu Atco set arrived today, and it's as terrific as expected. It's the first Rhino UK set I've seen packaged in a slipcase a la Universal's Deluxe Editions or Sony's Legacy Editions, and is a double digipak. There's a booklet with tons of label art and a detailed essay, and the whole shebang has been produced with expectedly great sound by Bill Inglot. I've only listened to a bit of the first disc yet, but this definitely is a treat for Lulu fans!! Lots of Bee Gees material (due to Lulu's marriage to Maurice Gibb at the time of the recording) plus Bacharach, Lennon/McCartney, Randy Newman, etc. Good stuff!

Just got mine too.
Awesome unissued tracks on the second disc. Why there wasn't a 3rd ATCO is a real mystery as these tracks are all great! Good version of Leslie Duncans "Love Song".
Really too bad Inglot's gone from Rhino and not around to see the release of this . He must have been finishing this up just as he was being escorted out of the building!

One of the best releases of 2007! Long overdue and very well done. Excellent collection of non-US picture sleeves.

Mine got here yesterday, and I will add my raves to the others already posted. The second disc is especially impressive. Makes you fall in love with Lulu all over again (not that anyone could fall OUT of love with Lulu, of course).

A heads-up for those of you who feel uncomfortable ordering from overseas ~ Amazon USA has now dropped the price on this collection by $20, which more or less brings it in line with the other outlets:

(There are also several third party dealers at Amazon USA with even lower prices.)

I will concur with all the good things said about this release with one difference-I absolutely hate the version of "Marley Purt Drive". I think it's way too busy with too many horns all over the place. That aside, I love the record. Lulu does a particularly good job on the slower
numbers. She remains one of my favorites.

I am also thrilled with this reissue! It has definitely been worth the wait! The tracks on the second disc are amazing, especially her version of Elton John's "Come Down In Time". NEW ROUTES still sounds as good as I remembered it from ALL those years ago! I don't know any other version of "Marley Purt Drive", so I really like Lulu's version. It's funny, my album had a skip in it during "Where's Eddie" and I am so brainwashed by it, I was expecting it to start so I would have to gently press on the tonearm to get it to "unskip"! An incredible job by Rhino/Warner UK. It's a shame that none of these incredible albums by Cher, Dusty Springfield, Jackie DeShannon, or Lulu did very well in their time -- because they sure sound amazing all these decades later!
