Being an avid Star Trek observer and also a submarine veteran, I thought I'd pose this match up. Of course, I'm going to go with my boys in the submarine force... but some of you may have other thoughts on this one.

Doesn't Starfleet have a marine corps which we've never seen?

How would this work? Would they send a starship of marines into space to do naval operations on another planet?

Of course we saw them. They were a big part of going & battling the Xindi in the 3rd(?) season of Enterprise. In the grey camo?

Those soldiers were called MACOs, short for Military Assault Command Operations. They were not normally part of the Terran Starfleet chain of command, but the unit onboard Enterprise was assigned to Archer and followed his orders. If there are any "Starfleet marines," then they're probably more like the soldiers seen in a few DS9 episodes during the war against the Dominion.

I figure Starfleet personnel can't hold their liquor like a submarine crew. Starfleet uses synthohol, after all.

Then there's that goofy Starfleet fighting style with all those energy-wasting roundhouse kicks and two-handed punches up against the real fighting moves taught by our military.

Starfleet always has their weapons set to "stun." Navy weapons are permanently set to "penetrate."

The only advantage I can see for Starfleet is all the hot chics they have. That would distract the all-male submarine crew something fierce.

Transporters and transporter buffers. Submariners wouldn't even be in a fight.

Sulu made several references to seamen.

Oh wait... nevermind.

I was an airdale. Not a submariner. I tend to think fleet personnel get it.

Rather than create a different thread, I thought I'd post some pics of the new 774-class attack submarine here... particularly since this boat reminds me so much of the NX-01...

That's due in large part to the heavy use of COTS (consumer off the shelf) technology for this class. Older ones like the one I served on used clunky contract-technology.
