Description
One of the most iconic and influential albums ever, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon celebrates its 50th Anniversary.

The album was partly developed during live performances, and the band premiered an early version of the suite at London’s Rainbow Theatre several months before recording began. ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’ is the eighth studio album by Pink Floyd, originally released in March 1973. The new material was recorded in 1972 and 1973 at EMI Studios (now Abbey Road Studios) in London. The iconic sleeve, which depicts a prism spectrum, was designed by Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis and drawn by George Hardie. ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’ has sold over 50 million copies worldwide.

The new deluxe box set includes CD and gatefold vinyl of the newly remastered studio album and Blu-Ray + DVD audio featuring the original 5.1 mix and remastered stereo versions. The set also includes additional new Blu-ray disc of Atmos mix plus CD and LP of ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon - Live At Wembley Empire Pool, London, 1974.'

I am very thankful they're releasing the live album on its own. I will be more than happy to get that for one-twentieth the price of the box. I feel bad for those who will want the Atmos mix.

Terrible, terrible, terrible.

I already have official versions of the COMPLETE Wembley show (split up between The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here immersion sets + the Continuation set in The Early Years box), so I had no interest in that, but it would have been a nice have for Floyd fans if they would have put the COMPLETE show out in a single release, especially a stand-alone vinyl release. But with the title of the live album, and that there is no way the full show would fit onto a single CD, it sure looks like it will just be the DSOTM portion of that show, which makes it a rehash of what was already in the immersion box set.

There is just no meat and potatoes in this set in terms of new music. It's The Dark Side of the Moon studio and The Dark Side of the Moon live. Same things we have been listening to for decades now. IMO the old immersion box was far, far better than this as it had a few random audio odds and ends thrown in there and a video component (and marbles too!!!). Actually, thinking back, that disc in the immersion set that had a early mix of the album + some demo/live stuff was a really good and interesting listen. Just that disc alone beats the crap of what is being offered now, and I distinctly remember getting the immersion box brand new for somewhere around $80, which makes the $300 retail on this new box a joke and puts it firmly into rip-off city.

IMO, the only interesting thing in this set are the 7" singles. How often can you say that? But these singles will likely have the edited versions of Money, Us and Them and Time and that makes these the most interesting thing in this set.

You're right, I forgot the Wembley version is on the Immersion box. I don't need this at all.

This is an enormous joke.

That live show isn’t rare in the least and it’s woefully incomplete.

This is far from my top Floyd albums anyway.

Can’t wait for the 51st anniversary set.

I'm with everyone on here. The deluxe is a HUGE rip-off because there's nothing new music-wise. All hardcore PF fans got the Immersion box anyways. I bought the Experience edition and that has the live show.

My only regret was not getting the Immersion set for the 5.1 Bluray.

I bought The Later Years set for $300+ and most of it was released a couple years later individually. I'm not going there again.

Also, do the powers-that-be understand that not everyone wants vinyl? I haven't done vinyl since 1993 or so. I'm never going back either.

I agree, Most disappointing. After the Immersion box, not that long ago, i was very surprised to read that there was going to be anything for the 50th anniversary. I was very hopeful for some unheard studio stuff. As someone else mentioned though, this concert was already released and they're releasing only half of it here. This rivals the "Beggar's Banquet" 50 anniversary release for the stupidest and most useless anniversary release.

This is why in a few months that Linda will be posting the "75% off" posts. :lmao: No hardcore PF will buy this.

So not only is the Wembley show just a partial show, but there is a rumor floating around that they have edited parts out of songs in the Dark Side of the Moon performance to fit it on one vinyl LP. There is probably truth to that rumor as I just stuck the CD from the immersion set into a player and the running length is 55:11. If so, I can't see why anyone would have any interest in the vinyl either. So it really does come down to paying $300 for a Blu-ray with the Atmos mix.

For those that might be interested in the CD version of the Wembley show, the rumor has it that the songs will not be edited on the CD version, so The Dark Side of the Moon performance will be complete on the CD.

Also a lot of complaining that the old Quad mix is not in the box set...so another thing that was part of the immersion box that is not here.

On the positive, there is a hard cover book in this set that is supposed to be excellent. Not really sure of what the contents are. However, that book will be available separately, so no one will have to shell out $300 to simply get that. Linda or moderators might want to look that one up and not only post it in the books forum, but also put it in the first post of this thread as it seems it's release is tied into the release of this box set.

Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the release of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon, this highly desirable album-sized package features rare and unseen backstage and onstage photography and reveals the visual conception of the original iconic album artwork.

March 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the release of The Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd. Designed by Pentagram to high specifications, this official book commemorating the band and the album will be a covetable package for the legions of Floyd fans out there―new and old. This date will also see the launch of a luxury box set containing a re-release of the album together with numerous related music items.

This luxurious book presents rare and unseen backstage and onstage photography of the band during the album tours of 1972 to 1975. 129 candid black-and-white photographs by Storm Thorgerson, Jill Furmanovsky, Aubrey Powell, Storm Thorgerson, and Peter Christopherson document the soundchecks, the shows, and the after shows. A review of the October 1972 Wembley gig, originally published in Melody Maker, provides insight into one of the Floyd’s most celebrated performances, and there is a complete listing of the tour dates.

This beautiful book also reveals the visual conception of the iconic album artwork.

From the People Are Freaking Idiots file...

I saw on Twitter that Pink Floyd changed their profile picture to promote this release.

Image

The replies were...astounding. Not unexpected, but still. Lots of accusations of them going "woke" and promoting an "agenda", and "I'm never going to listen to this band again", followed of course by people pointing out the original cover.

My favorite reply was something to the effect of, "Man, these people are taking 'we don't need no education' way too seriously."

What else could they possibly wring from that master tape? Between this and the Costello/Bacharach mess, I guess I'm out on boxed sets going forward.

I would love to have the 5.1 DTS surround as a stand alone blu-ray.

CD of the live Wembley performance of Dark Side (and only Dark Side) already came out on the Experience edition, released at the same time as the Immersion edition.
