Tim Sale's Twitter account has revealed that the artist passed away today.

This is devastating. He was my favorite Batman artist. Seemed like a super decent guy as well.

Yeah, in every picture of the two of them back in the 90s and 00s, he looked like he was about 15-20 years younger than Jeph Loeb.

Besides being devastated by his passing, I'm pretty stunned to learn that Sale was actually the older one, by 2 years.

That excerpt is from his art book, Tim Sale: Black & White. A look at some of his early art is pretty cool -- clearly, he loved the likes of Bernie Wrightson, Frank Frazetta, etc. Sword and sorcery was relevant back then... alas...

And here's some pencil samples he did in the early 80s for Marvel in an attempt to break in. You can really see his style is already maturing, especially his faces.

It's an interview book, so there's actually a ton of pages. He doesn't really say much else about Buscema or Romita though.

He does say that Rubinstein gave him a critique that he didn't really appreciate and didn't feel was helpful.
