I like a lot of these, and I would be hard pressed to pick just one.

Shawshank was my initial thought but I also liked some of the older ones.

Definitely some great films there, but to me Shawshank isn't just the best prison break movie, it's in my top 10 all time for any movie.

Yep. Shawshank is one of those movies that i do not own on DVD (or maybe I do, I forget), but I will stop and watch it
almost every time I see it being played on TV. Doesn't matter where the movie is at or if I can watch it all. Just seeing
moments of it is good enough, like your memory getting a 15-minute booster shot.

Because of this thread I put it on for background while I work today. :)

No "The Big House?" No "20,000 Years in Sing Sing?" No "Each Dawn I Die?" How could a list of prison movies not have ANYTHING from 1930s Hollywood?

Is "We're No Angels" a prison picture? Or more of a "prisoner" movie? I've always enjoyed that one.

We're No Angles is fun and cute and hilarious, but I'd hardly call it a prison movie. None of it really takes place in prison. Just 3 convicts who escaped prison, gain enlightenment, and go back.

Then again, maybe Con Air isn't really a prison movie, either, unless I've forgotten any prison scenes. Prison transport and escape, etc. but no actual prison scene. Or were there?

What an incredible list of films.

Except for the few that are garbage and don't belong.

I put "Great Escape," although the movie is no substitute for the book of that title which tells the actual story. My brother had it when we were kids, and I started reading it and got pulled right into it. I've never understood why so many movies feel they have to "improve" on a true story that already outdoes any fiction.
