Journey's first new studio album in almost a decade is "starting to take shape," according to a social media post from band cofounder and guitarist Neal Schon.
The band released their last studio album, "Eclipse," in 2011 but Schon took to Instagram on Tuesday (June 17th) to share a video and a included a caption about working on the new record.
He wrote, "Been in studio and JOURNEY album is starting to take shape. Back in later today zzzzz @nealschon @nealandmichaeleschon @merck_mercuriadis @journeymusicofficial @gibsoncustom @chromeheartsofficial #schn #soar".
The band debuted their new lineup last month during a special isolation performance. They replaced former members Ross Valory and Steve Smith with one-time bassist Randy Jackson and Narada Michael Walden, and also added Jason Derlatka.

because you have been an ardent defender of the post-perry journey, have you bought all 4 post-perry journey albums and will you be buying this one?

Yes.
My honest thoughts:
Arrival-Too many ballads and too bloated with songs. It does have two absolute classics in Higher Place and We Will Meet Again that are as good as anything Journey did. Augeri was a very good singer. The album was not good but was exactly the same as Trial By Fire-too many ballads and too long. Grade: C
Red 13-Incredibly experimental and hard rocking. An EP that was quite damn good and a chance for the guys to expand the sound without worrying about commercial sales. Killer stuff. Grade: A-
Generations-Atrocious. All 5 band members sang and the songs are largely horrible. Faith in the Heartland was great but the rest is awful. They gave it to us free when we saw the tour (best Journey show I ever saw aside from 1981). I wanted to give it back. I later gave it away. Grade: F
Revelation-I really like this one and it was their best since Escape. Arnel was a revelation. A consistently enjoyable album start to finish and I still play it once in a while. The tour was fantastic and the new songs (I believe they played 4 or 5) went over well and the album went Platinum. Grade: B+
Eclipse-Great to hear longer songs and some were progressive. Yet, it was not memorable at all and wasn’t a fun listen. It strayed too far from the Journey sound though I applaud not doing the same thing. Definitely a Schon album, but only occasionally good. Grade: C
I will not praise albums just for the sake of it, so these were my honest thoughts. I also thought the last three Perry albums were mediocre.
I’ll get the new one and I hope the classic sound is back along with the odd Fusion jam. But honestly, very few new albums by veteran acts are worth repeated plays these days, so I won’t be excited.

I also really like Revelation. Played the shit out of it on a vacation to Cancun one year so it became a soundtrack. Hearing those songs takes me back. “Wildest Dreams” is a great rocker! “What I Needed” is epic Journey.

Arrival had one of the most killer songs Journey ever did. Listening to it now, you wouldn't know that it was Augeri instead of Perry. Killer guitar work and keys.

if those songs are THAT good, which you guys seem to think, why in god's name don'y they play them live?
it is my bone of contention.
Because 99% of people haven't heard them and just want to hear the hits from their (the band's AND the listeners') heyday? At this point in their career, they aren't trying to convert people to the new stuff.

That is such a great album and it’s hard to believe that was 12 years ago!
“Wildest Dream” is great and other faves include “Never Walk Away”, “The Journey (Revelation)”, “Like a Sunshower” and “Where Did I Lose Your Love.”

Journey fans may be releasing the first song from the new batch of music they have been working on in July, according to cofounder and guitarist Neal Schon.
The band released their last studio album, "Eclipse", in 2011 but Schon shared during an appearance on SiriusXM that fans may be hearing a new single next month.
When he was asked when new music can be expected, Schon responded, "The first song that we recorded, Arnel had just finished vocals on it, I believe, yesterday. And so now we're gonna get it into the mixing stages. Hopefully, I think sometime in July, sooner or later in July."
Neal also shared that the band is currently working five brand new songs. He said, And we are off and running, man. We have, like, five new songs in the making right now, and hopefully a single coming out in July sometime."
The band has not been able to physically record new music together but have been working remotely, according to Neal. He said, "Arnel has been in the Philippines, and there's a whole bunch of hoops that you have to jump through for him to get over here, with quarantine and everything else.
"I've been working in the studio here, 'cause Narada lives close by, and I'm working at his studio and I'm laying down tracks with live drums and guitar, much like I've done with many, many records."
He continued, "Randy is recording his parts in L.A., Jonathan is recording his parts in Florida, Arnel is recording his parts in the Philippines. And it's a virtual record right now. But I am looking forward to getting together in the same room.
"In the meantime, I feel like we should just continue doing what we're doing and creating new music. I feel by the time that we actually get out, we could possibly have two new records done."

Neal Schon says Journey’s new lineup have 13 tracks largely recorded for a new album — and that he expects the result to be a “diverse” work in the vein of 1981 blockbuster Escape.
In a recent interview with Eddie Trunk, the guitarist revealed that plans had been made to release singles ahead of a proposed tour starting at the end of next year. He added that he's hoping to make a documentary to accompany the LP’s arrival.
Schon, keyboardist Jonathan Cain and singer Arnel Pineda started working with bassist Randy Jackson, drummer Narada Michael Walden and keyboardist Jason Derlatka after the dismissal of Ross Valory and Steve Smith, who were accused of trying to take over the band’s name.
“It’s going really, really amazing,” he told Trunk of their sessions, explaining that coronavirus restrictions meant they’d been recording remotely. “We’ve got like 13 new tracks in the can that Arnel is now singing on. But the band is on fire, man. I’m excited about this record. I believe we’ll start releasing things after the new year.”
He continued: “We have new management that has come into play, and they’ve been amazing to work with: Q Prime; we have Peter Mensch and Cliff Burnstein … I thought we were going to release a single a lot earlier and then, you know, this all came down and they wanted to push it back a bit, and it makes sense ... [Hopefully] near the end of ’21, we’ll be back on tour when everything gets up and running again.”
Schon noted that “for being a virtual record, it sounds amazing,” adding that he expected seven or eight of the current tracks would make the final cut, along with additional material yet to be written. “I’m really pushing to go for a diverse record, like we did with Escape, that has a lot of different elements to it,” he said. “We [got] into some heavier R&B-type rock, like a ‘Separate Ways’ kinda vibe. … The rhythm section is just solid. It sounds amazing. ... Before we get going, we’re obviously going to rehearse and put a new show together … We’ll have plenty of time to hang and probably document a lot of the rehearsals so we can have somewhat of a new documentary to put out there with the new record.”
