Gonzo Texas musician Jerry Jeff Walker dead at 78
By Charlie Haldeman

The writer of "Mr. Bojangles" and countless other folk and country songs was credited with more than music. He helped bring us some other well-known stars like Jimmy Buffett.

AUSTIN, Texas (KTRK) -- Jerry Jeff Walker, the vagabonding gonzo musician known as one of the founding fathers of modern Texas country music, has died after a years-long fight against throat cancer, according to the Austin American Statesman.

While Walker was familiar to Texans as the purveyor of the Lukenbach sound, he was known wider as the writer of the 1968 song, "Mr. Bojangles," a tune he penned after meeting a homeless street performer while in a New Orleans jail cell for public intoxication.

He was born Ronald Clyde Crosby in Oneonta, New York, on March 16, 1942 and began playing music in the area as a teen. He left home to roam the country in the 1960s and spent time in New York City's Greenwich Village, New Orleans and Key West, Florida, before migrating and settling in the Austin area in 1971, a region he became most widely associated with, as the live music capital began to earn its reputation.

He recorded mainstream country music albums for MCA and Elektra before setting out on his own independent label, Tried & True Music, according to his biography. The label and business enterprise was managed by his wife, Susan.

Always liked his music and am looking forward to the Cherry Red album collection of his Atco/Elektra years next month. RIP JJW

R.I.P.

My first guitar teacher went on to play with Jerry Jeff after he left high school and college.

He could really play at 16 - grew up in England as an Air Force brat and moved back to the states in 1964....

He was on one or two of Jerry Jeff's live albums...

Mr. Bojangles is one of those songs I was surprised someone wrote. It seemed like it had always been there.

RIP

RIP, sir.

Todd Snider was a huge JJW fan, and tells several great stories about the man, especially the one about Santa Fe that starts about 12:30 into this clip.

Now, the man with the big hat is buying
Drink up while the drinking is free
Drink up to the cowboys a-dead or a-dying

Drink to my compadres and me
— "The Man With The Big Hat"

(It doesn't get any better than JJW's version of this on Live at Gruene Hall with Willie Nelson helpin' out)

Tippin' one to you, Jerry Jeff. Thank you for the music.

(and thank you for the Todd Snider!)

The Washington Post closed its obituary of him with the story that Todd Snider told in Alan's clip above. They took it from Snider's book "I Never Met a Story I Didn't Like." I assume it's more or less true.

David Bromberg played with Jerry Jeff Walker and covered "Mr. Bojangles" on this live recording with just him and a bass player. It tells the story of how Jerry Jeff came to write the song (which, I assume, is also more or less true) and includes a beautiful guitar solo to close out the recording. It starts at about 5:50 in the video below.
