Julian Bream died today at age 87. He played both the guitar and lute and expanded the guitar repertory beyond the Spanish music favored by Segovia to include English and German music. He also brought back the lute and inspired younger performers to play it.

I used to love it whenever he was on the cover of a guitar magazine in the days of hair metal. He was always so dignified and such an accomplished player. This is a huge loss.

I was lucky to see him in the 1990s at the Grand Opera House in Wilmington, Delaware. Despite the name, it is a small, intimate theater. A wonderful sold-out concert (capacity was just over 1,000). His between song talks were great, and the music selection ran from Bach, to Spanish, to modern works. No amplification at all and the sound was perfect.
