THE ROCK LOOKING TO STEP INTO FEATURE FILM ADAPTATION OF CLASSIC DC COMICS SUPERHERO by Mike Johnson @ 9:55:00 AM on 5/10/2007
Can you smell what Shazam is cooking?
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is considering playing the role of DC Comics superhero Captain Marvel in the feature film adaption of "Shazam!" which is currently being developed.
Comic book website SuperHero Hype quoted Johnson as saying he's discussed the possibility with Peter Segal, who's been tapped to produce the film, commenting, "Listen, John August is writing the script and he's a tremendous writer, and I'll just wait for the script to come in. But I'd love to work with Pete again, and certainly would want to work with John August. So there's a strong possibility."
I can see it; he's turning into a decent actor, and paired with the right kid as Billy, it could be a very cool movie.
I'm against this on general principle (don't like wrestlers as actors), but I can kind of see it. I still thing Brendan Fraser would be a better choice, though.
Again, I don't know (or care) much about the character, but what about Jerry O'Connell? He certainly did good voice work for Cap in JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED, and he's something of a bodybuilder.
Or hell, make Dylan McDermott gain 30 pounds of muscle and let him do it.
Captain Marvel isn't enough of a "name" for something like SHAZAM!, Matt. The word is better known, among the general public, as a Gomer Pyle exclamation than the magic word for Billy Batson.
The short-lived live-action TV show and the cartoon that shall forever live in infamy as THE KIDS SUPER POWER HOUR WITH SHAZAM didn't have a lot of impact on pop culture, it seems to me.
Worst miscasting ever. They find the personification of Black Adam and cast him as Captain Marvel?
Beyond stupid.
I disagree. He plays light humour very well, and I don't think he's that great a choice for Black Adam. He couldn't do EVIL very well. Arrogance, yeah, but not evil.
S'why I think he'd be a better Namor than Cap......
If the rock gets attached it might happen. But I'll believe it when I see it, as DC has no track record in getting superheroes out other than Superdude and Batstud.

That's what I mean, though. I don't think you can cast an unknown or lesser known actor in SHAZAM and get a big enough audience. It's a movie that you need a name actor for, to put bodies in the seats.
The only thing I think could work, otherwise, is if they did it as a Shrek-style animated movie, which probably would be better. Then you have a decent shot at having a huge family film.
