Description
UMC is delighted to announce the 4-CD, special edition of Cream’s Goodbye Tour Live 1968. Set for release in February 2020, this sumptuous set brings together 36 tracks, including 29 making their first appearance on CD, recorded during Cream’s farewell tour of the U.S. in October 1968 and their final UK date at London’s Royal Albert Hall on 26th November of that same year. There are a total of 19 previously unreleased tracks, and a further 10 tracks from the Royal Albert Hall show, which have only ever been available on DVD. Rolling Stone magazine’s David Fricke supplies insightful liner notes, chronicling the group’s collective musical genius and their legendary final tour.

On its original release in February 1969, Goodbye, which combined live performances from their last tour dates with a handful of studio recordings, rose to the UK no. 1 slot and to no. 2 on the U.S. Billboard chart. This new expanded edition comprises three U.S. concerts; Oakland Coliseum, Los Angeles Forum, San Diego Sports Arena alongside London’s Royal Albert Hall. It captures Cream at their virtuosic best, at the end but also at the height of their career.

With Cream, Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton, set the template for not only the ‘supergroup’ but also the ‘power trio’, with their innate musical talent and brilliance. Only coming together as Cream in July 1966, they shone briefly but blindingly brightly throughout two trailblazing years.

this thread got me thinking:

aside form the grateful dead and any other bands that offer whole concerts on CD, has there ever been anyone who has released as much live material as eric clapton?

cream had 3 studio albums, and 4 official live albums before this one, which has 4 CD's giving them a total of 7 1/2 live CD's and 3 1/2 studio albums. to clarify: half of 'goodbye' was live as was half of 'wheels of fire"

derek and the dominoes had one double album (single CD) and one double live CD.

and clapton solo, well, i have lost count, let's see:

rainbow consert
ec was here
timepieces I & II
just one night
half the 'blues' CD
a 4 disc box set (crossroads II) which had about 6 or 8 studio tracks on it
24 nights
one more car - one more rider
unplugged
eric clapton & steve winwood

did i miss any?

The San Diego show w/J.J. Cale (I think it was SD). And there was another recent show, I believe - yep, Royal Albert Hall.

So you are saying if you eliminate anyone who has released more, then he's released the most?
:)

i truly can't think of any band or artist with more legit live albums.

If you limit it only to live albums that were put out as the "current" release (not years later from the vaults as so many artists do nowadays), Eric Clapton is hard to beat.

and the more i look at it, i think he has released at least 5 or versions of 'further on up the road' live throughout his career.

and his 'crossroads II" box has 'ramblin on my mind' on it 3 different times!

Not getting too far off the subject I think FZ has over 40 live releases - that is not counting releases where the basic material was live with many, many, many studio overdubs (Sheik Yerbouti, Joe's Garage, Tinsel Town Rebellion...also excluding releases where nearly half of the music is live - Uncle Meat, Weasels, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Chunga's. Even if you back out the Guitar releases and adjust Roxy down to 1 release - there are still over 30...and IMO - not nearly enough. Even the releases during his lifetime - I believe are more than Eric.

Excuse me, but for me, we seemed to have veered way off the original topic of this thread. On the off-topic of “number of live current releases” for an artist, let me posit this: I don’t give a shit about the actual “number” of an artist’s live recordings…..what I care about is the “quality” of those recordings, and my personal enjoyment of those recordings!! When I listen to particular live versions of a song, I don’t go to an Excel spreadsheet in my head to determine whether it is the 1st, 3rd, or 20th live version of the song that I’ve heard, I only care about whether I like it or not….PERIOD!! As to this release, it was the heyday of their short performing days, and I’m in!!

easy now, i veered off-topic and i apologize if it upset you. it just kind of happened while i was reading this and making a clapton comp for my car at the same time.

as for on-topic, do you have live cream and live cream II? and were those also made in the "heydey" of the band?

and you points a quite valid about whether you like it or not, but as i stated above, how many times can you release a live version of a song before redundancy begins to set in? i mean 3 versions of 'ramblin' on the same box set? judging from what clapton has done with live recordings there had to be other things he could have put on that box in place of 2 of those versions.

Ask this in a Grateful Dead thread and see how long you survive.
