Can't mention everything, so I'll only mention Metro stuff.
Pens trade Olli Maatta to the Blackhawks for Dominik Kahun. It's good for a little Cap relief, and at a distance, Kahun could be a decent bottom 6 who got most of his points at even strength.
It's probably going to be a bad summer for the Pens otherwise. After the Kessel trade (which I hated) fell through, it looks like they'll have the same team still being up against the Cap and having some RFAs to sign - Marcus Pettersson, at least, being important. Justin Schultz might have to go to shake things up/free up more $$$$.
Pens are going to be haunted by the Capitals resigning Hagelin for 4 years at a cheap price. Plus they get Radko Gudas.......Tom Wilson + Gudas = scumbag trash team.
Rangers get Jacob Trouba for nothing.....rumored for signing Artemi Panarin after 7/1 as well.
Islanders keep Jordan Eberle at a reasonable price.
Flyers are spending, but at least overpaying. But they're better than the Pens at this point.
---------------
Biggest signing is Erik Karlsson staying with the Sharks for 8 years $11.5 AAV.
Could be a bad summer for the Maple Leafs.......especially now with what Mitch Marner can potentially get based on the Jeff Skinner and Kevin Hayes contracts.
Golden Knights are already paying 19 players a combined total over next year's projected Cap.

Quote: https://www.nhl.com/news/hockey-hall-of ... -308054180Carbonneau, Wickenheiser lead Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2019 Canadiens center, Canada women's forward selected along with Zubov, Nedomansky, Rutherford, YorkGuy Carbonneau, who won the Stanley Cup three times in a 19-season NHL career, and Hayley Wickenheiser, a four-time Olympic gold medalist with Canada, are among the four players and two Builders elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame's Class of 2019. Also selected for entry into the Hall of Fame are Sergei Zubov, who played 16 seasons in the NHL, and Vaclav Nedomansky, who played six NHL seasons and was a mainstay for the Czechoslovakia national team. Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford and longtime Boston College coach Jerry York were elected as Builders. The six will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Nov. 18. Carbonneau had 663 points (260 goals, 403 assists) in 1,318 NHL games with the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues and Dallas Stars, and was recognized as an outstanding defensive forward, winning the Selke Trophy in 1988, 1989 and 1992. The former Canadiens center and captain won the Cup twice with Montreal (1986, 1993) and once with the Dallas Stars (1999). He had 93 points (38 goals, 55 assists) in 231 Stanley Cup Playoff games. "I was lucky enough with all the coaches I had, I knew I was always on the good side of the offense," Carbonneau told TSN. "I think the NHL was a different level; fortunately for me when [Canadiens coach] Jacques Lemaire came in, I think he saw the potential of [my] becoming one of those players, "I think Jacques was playing the same way even if he was playing with Guy Lafleur and Steve Shutt, he was able to put points on the ice, but he was always able to play well defensively. That's what he wanted me to do, it's just something I thrived on. I had the chance to play with some great players like Bob Gainey, somebody who was pretty close to Frank Selke, so I had a good teacher there." Wickenheiser is a five-time Olympic medalist, including four golds (2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014), and was the most valuable player of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics and 2006 Torino Olympics. The former center won the IIHF World Championship seven times and is the Canada women's team's all-time leader in goals (168), assists (211) and points (377) in 276 games. "I think when you win seven world championships as one of the key players and captain and win four Olympic gold medals and have a storied career both on the women's side and play on the men's side in Finland, that should tell you in itself where she was looked upon and revered by the rest of the hockey world," Hockey Hall of Fame chairman Lanny McDonald said of Wickenheiser, who was not available to speak because she was taking an exam for medical school. "And it is richly deserved that she is one of the newest members of the Hockey Hall of Fame." Zubov won the Stanley Cup twice, with the New York Rangers in 1994 and the Stars in 1999. He also won a gold medal at the 1992 Albertville Olympics with the Unified Team of former Soviet states. The former defenseman had 771 points (152 goals, 619 assists) in 1,068 games with the Rangers, Stars and Pittsburgh Penguins, and 117 points (24 goals, 93 assists) in 164 NHL playoff games. Zubov never won a major individual NHL award. "I was 18 years old when I traveled with the national team, we had a tournament up in Canada and I had a chance to walk in the Hall of Fame," Zubov said. "Back then I couldn't even think of or dream that one day I would have a chance to be part of it." Nedomansky was the first athlete from an Eastern European communist country to defect to North America to pursue a career in professional hockey. He had 277 points (121 goals, 156 assists) in 420 NHL games over six seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, Blues and Rangers, and eight points (three goals, five assists) in seven playoff games. Prior to playing in the NHL in 1978, the forward was a longtime member of the Czechoslovakia national team and played in the 1968 Grenoble Olympics and the 1972 Sapporo Olympics, as well as four seasons in the World Hockey Association from 1974-78. "As you know, I'm not really new coming to North America," Nedomansky said. "I've been coming here since 1962 and admiring your players and your league, and when I made that decision in 1974 to follow my dream, I jumped right into it and I'm so happy I did that. I would thank all my teams and all my players… thanks to them, I'm where I am today." Rutherford is the only GM in the NHL expansion era (since 1967-68) to win the Stanley Cup with multiple teams; he led the Carolina Hurricanes to the Cup in 2006 before winning with the Penguins in 2016 and 2017. He was named the NHL General Manager of the Year in 2016. "I started my career in Beeton [Ontario], 50 miles north of the Hall of Fame, never dreaming that I would once be in it," Rutherford said. "I've traveled lots of miles in hockey and met so many great people along the way." York has coached at the collegiate level for 47 years, 25 of them at Boston College, following seven years at Clarkson and 15 years at Bowling Green; he is college hockey's all-time winningest coach with 1,067 wins. He is one of three coaches in NCAA history to lead two different schools to national titles; he coached Bowling Green to the championship in 1984 before leading Boston College to titles in 2001, 2008, 2010 and 2012. "My very first recruit when I started in the early '70s was Dave Taylor," York said. "But Bowling Green, George McPhee, Rob Blake. At B.C., we've had Brian Gionta, Brooks Orpik, Marty Reasoner, Johnny Gaudreau. So a host of them. They certainly make you a better coach when you have those players." On May 28, it was announced that Frank Brown, a longtime hockey writer and NHL communications executive, will receive the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award for excellence in hockey journalism from the Hockey Hall of Fame, selected by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association; and Jim Hughson, best known for play-by-play work with the Vancouver Canucks and "Hockey Night in Canada," will receive the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award, selected by the NHL Broadcasters' Association for outstanding contributions as a hockey broadcaster.

Phil Kessel is gone....................to Arizona for Alex Galchenyuk (swap of minor D-men and AZ getting a 4th)
The Pens are weaker, but under the circumstance, this is somewhat better than the vetoed Wild trade a few weeks ago.
At least they get a little more cap space for Monday or later.......and Galchenyuk wants to do well in a UFA year where the Pens will even have more flexibility next year.
Kessel should be great being reunited with Tocchet.....and Arizona is probably now a playoff team at minimum.
There have been rumors swirling around from unnamed Pens about Kessel's personality causing problems.......one rumor mentioning it has led to Jake Guentzel getting a swelled head.
I'm still predicting that at this moment, the Pens are not a playoff team.

Not a fan of this deal at all. I’m a big Kessel fan, and he’s one of the players I’ve enjoyed watching the most over the last few years. The rumors that this deal was coming were too strong to ignore, and they were a big part of why I got rid of my season tickets this season (still planning on a six-game plan, or whatever the mini thing is). The blanding of this team continues - any player with a personality has been jettisoned the last couple of years. Fleury. Cole. Reaves. Kessell. Last season was the least I’ve enjoyed hockey in years - not just the Penguins, to be sure, but I didn’t enjoy Penguin games much at all, and I skipped watching more Pens games than I have in years. I kind of expect that to continue this year.
As for the Phil rumors, let’s just say I’m in the camp that finds the timing of these comments somewhat curious. I’m not fully in the conspiracy camp, but it’s funny that his habits didn’t seem to be a problem for three years, and suddenly they are. Even odder is that the snippets I saw weren’t that bad - they said Kessel was a regular at the casino here, and on the days before a game day, he was gone right after dinner. Still put up over a point a game on a team that struggled to score goals at times.
But hey, at least I get to hear how great Dominic Simon’s Corsi numbers are.
ETA: Charles has probably been waiting for me to blow up over this! And they’re talking about an extension for Murray - oh joy!

............and Sebastian Aho - 5 years, $42 mil ($21 mil paid next year) - Carolina from matching Montreal offer sheet.
Alot of the Pens' writers like Tanev and what he will bring to the team. Alot of Pens fans (reading comments sections) are furious......especially with the length of the deal.
I'm not happy Kessel is gone.......though I understand blowing up the nucleus after 2 uninspiring seasons. It had to be him, Malkin, or Letang.......and skeptical reports or not, he fit the bill. When Malkin trade rumors were mentioned last month, fans were up in arms (comments section again). I think most would've wanted to see Letang moved based on the Islanders series and winning their last Cup without him.........but (similar to Kessel) subtracting him on the blue line would take away numbers that couldn't be replaced by the return.......and the D will be problematic enough with the Johnson/Gudbranson pairing. I still think the Johnson contract will be the death of the team.
As for personalities.........most of who left was Sullivan not wanting to use them. The Cole/Reaves-Brassard trade was the other death of the team.
I guess we'll see what happens. The writers like that they are starting to get younger. This is pretty much next years team.......aside from whoever they'll have to salary dump (Rust?) to sign the RFAs and stay under the cap.
Right now, if the season started tomorrow, I see the Metro as...............
1. Capitals 2. Rangers 3. Islanders 4. Flyers 5. Hurricanes 6. Devils 7. Penguins 8. Blue Jackets
Capitals and Rangers significantly better than the rest.

Seattle has officially named Ron Francis as its first general manager.
The hiring of Francis had previously been reported, but now we have confirmation by the franchise. Francis played in 1,731 NHL games and was the general manager of the Carolina Hurricanes for roughly four years before being relieved of his duties in March 2018.
His first major task will be handling the expansion draft and all potential deals that come with it. Much of Vegas' initial success can be traced back to the expansion draft and Seattle will enjoy the same rules for theirs.

Hockey of course is rarely discussed on NY sports talk shows despite having 3 teams in the NY Metro area but their was some talk of the Islanders plight. Since Brooklyn is now a failed experiment and a new building on the border of Queens/ Nassau is years away (no ground has been touched), the team seems to play best in their old stomping grounds as seen by this years playoffs.
And it was that schizophrenic scenario that may have doomed them in the playoffs.

And it was that schizophrenic scenario that may have doomed them in the playoffs. There's no room for 3 teams in the NY/NJ area anymore. The Devils and Isles have hideous attendance numbers. One of them needs to relocate. Rumored cities have been Kansas City, Oklahoma City, Hamilton, Cleveland and San Antonio. But I expect the NHL to insist on 3 teams in NY/NJ whether it makes sense or not.

But I expect the NHL to insist on 3 teams in NY/NJ whether it makes sense or not. I live 10 miles away from Newark, so I'm for them staying. It's my easiest/cheapest option for going to games. I'll stop going there to see the Penguins, though.

Andrei Vasilevskiy - 8 years, $9.5M AAV extension - Lightning
This is going to kill the Penguins in Matt Murray negotiations.

This is going to kill the Penguins in Matt Murray negotiations. Yep - Penguins are going to end up overpaying for a guy who's looking more and more like a mediocre to slightly above average goaltender. Thought it was the wrong decision then, still think so today. On another note, made my 10-game ticket plan picks today (dropped the half-season package). Got the three games I really wanted - Kessel's return, Maatta's return, and the Vegas game. Also got another Connor McDavid game (so smooth to watch), and my son got his TB and Colorado choices.

Quote: Paul Fenton's rocky 14-month run as general manager of the Wild has abruptly ended. Fenton was fired Tuesday by owner Craig Leipold, according to two sources with knowledge of the transaction. Hired away from the Nashville organization on May 22, 2018, Fenton was charged with improving the team's postseason performance. The Wild made the NHL playoffs six consecutive seasons, but advanced to the second round only twice, under previous GM Chuck Fletcher. The Wild are turning into a dumpster fire.

It's being reported that NBC is removing Pierre McGuire from their top broadcasting team and replacing him with Brian Boucher (not the waterboy, the former goalie).

The Flyers start the season in Prague against Chicago on Friday.
Any chance they can leave the team there and just put a bunch of Grittys on the ice?
Can't do much worse than the team.
