NEW YORK (Billboard) - Tom Petty's 2006 release "Highway Companion" will be reissued in expanded form June 5.

The American Recordings/Warner Bros. set will feature demos of album tracks "This Old Town" and "Big Weekend," as well as the unreleased cuts "Home" and "Around the Roses." The leatherette board packaging will also include two postcards.

"Highway Companion" debuted at No. 4 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 430,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Petty and his band the Heartbreakers will be the subject of a documentary by Peter Bogdanovich, which is expected to be released before the end of the year.

I guess it didn't sell enough copies the first go-round.

A good album, but not worth buying again in less than a year's time.

Pass on this one.

Boo! Hiss!

I'm getting so tired of this.

If the "bonus" tracks were worth a crap, why not issue them the first time?

If they weren't good enough to be released the first time around, then why expect us to buy something we've already purchased once?

I'll pass.

I'm involved in a discussion on this very topic on the SH forums at the moment...to summarize:

1. Tom Petty, he of the "fight the record companies from raising the price of an album" circa 1981 should speak out about this

2. I don't have a problem with a Deluxe Edition of anything, as long as it's released at the SAME TIME as the regular edition...not a year later.

3. There should be a website set up whereupon owners of the original CD release could "unlock" downloads of the bonus tracks, thereby spliffing the "early adopters", and if the obsessive collectors want the whole package (postcards!) they can still purchase it.

Postcards?! Great! I've been meaning to get a couple of postcards to send to a couple buddies of mine. Will stamps be included?

This is what's showing now as the cover art for the expanded edition, not the image earlier in the thread. Looks like there's a paper band around the package?

I picked this up for a friend with a $10 BB in store only coupon that I've been unable to find anything to use it on. Even with the bonus tracks it's under an hour. WHAT A RIP OFF!
