Today marks the first wave of Prince catalog titles to be released through an exclusive agreement struck in June between The Prince Estate and Sony Music Entertainment focusing on 1995-2010, a crucial epoch in Prince history. 23 highly-collectible Prince catalog titles (many of them hard-to-find or out-of-print) and Prince Anthology: 1995-2010 (a newly-curated anthology of 37 essential tracks from the era) are now available across all major streaming services and digital service providers.
Many of these albums, long sought-after by fans and collectors, are available for the first time for streaming and download, adding more than 300 essential Prince songs to the artist's online in-print catalog.
Prince catalog titles newly available digitally via SME/Legacy are:
Linda, even with 16 bit cd, I'm running out of storage space. The hardest part of my move was packing & unpacking cd's & dvd's & setting up racks. There is NOTHING wrong with digital files as long as they are cd quality of better. Yes, I like the booklets. Their is no reason they can't start packaging dl's with full pdf booklets (which with my 60 yo eyes are easier to read anyway!

If you're not nice
A series of Prince CDs would have been something else entirely. This is worthless.
I have nothing against non-physical listening choices, including streaming. I check out music on YouTube all the time. But I've been considering restricting the forum to physical releases only -- that is what we're actually here for, after all.

I always find it funny that download announcements are in the Collector's Corner of ICE, since (for me) collecting something that isn't a physical object seems downright impossible!

It's the music that matters, not the "package" (be it digital: CD, DVD, Blu, SACD, Download; or Analog: Record, Tape). The only place the package truly matters to me is in quality: decent (i.e. Japanese or German) vinyl; Reel to reel 15 ips tapes or top end cassette, lossless & hi res digital, etc.
My very conservative father predicted 30 years ago that music would end up stored on transistors (& with Smart cards & Flash drives, he ended up being correct).

Yes, but that doesn't mean you can "collect" something that's intangible. I didn't say downloads weren't music, just that they aren't collectible.

I can see your point.
The other side is some hi-res downloads have gone out of print & are highly sought after. A bit of a quandary. And Amazon sells a Beatles 24/44 Flac Flash Drive with Beatles graphics on it. How would we classify that?

Since you can copy those hi-res downloads, and still get the exact same music with no differences, would anyone actually pay for those out of print files? I'm sure many are floating around the web somewhere.

Well, of course the Flash Drive is a physical object and can be collected. You can copy the files to another device, and still enjoy the music (as you do, I'm sure!) but a collector is going to want the actual Beatles flash drive. Thanks for discussing this, Geff. I appreciate seeing the issue from different points of view.

Very difficult issue. I suspect no matter how I feel, we're going mostly streaming soon (& I'm not at all into streaming!).
I always appreciate your pov also, Jason.

I would think for sure that we will see vinyl for most of these titles. CDs...much bigger question. I'm still hoping that if CDs aren't released in the US, that they will be released in Japan.
If CDs are issued, I will 100% for sure be purchasing: -One Nite Alone...Live! -One Nite Alone...The Aftershow: It's Ain't Over! -The Chocolate Invasion -The Slaughterhouse
Will also strongly consider (and would probably end up buying sooner or later): -Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic (although the original album is horrible) -One Nite Alone... -Xpectation -N.E.W.S. -C-Note -Indigo Nights

Linda,
Maybe you should start a digital-only forum. I agree that this site is a physical media site, but this would allow those who want to check that out access to that kind of info.

No, hon. There are plenty of other sites for that. The ICE boards were, are and will be about compact discs, for as long as there's interest and as long as they're made. We do have DVDs, Blu-rays, music-related books, we have vinyl peppering the audio release threads ... but it's all physical media. My interest is only towards enhancing that focus, not diffusing it further.

Weren't all of these, with the exception of c-note, xpectation, slaughterhouse, chocolate invasion, available already on cd?
Wouldn't a collector be looking to collect those?
I'm a bit confused by this discussion
I believe that's correct. Although the following should be noted. One Nite Alone... was only available on CD through Prince's NPG Club, and was a gift included when buying One Nite Alone...Live! One Nite Alone... was never commercially available on CD as a stand-alone and I don't think a physical release has ever been offered for sale outside of his club. The CD is quite rare, median sale price on discogs exceeds $300. Indigo Nights was only available on CD as a bonus in a book. I don't think the CD was ever issued as a stand-alone. 2010 was included in various European publications. I don't think CD copies were ever sold individually, although the market was flooded with copies and scoring a used one is cheap and not difficult.
N.E.W.S. was not a big seller and has become somewhat pricey on the used markets. Looks to be worth about $50 by the data available on discogs.

I'm not aware of any large hi-res boards other than Hoffman? The only one I've found is quite small.

I got all excited before I read the thread.
Same thing with the new George Clinton/Parliament "album" Medicaid Fraud Dogg - so far just streaming and digital, which, to me, means it doesn't exist.

N.E.W.S. is just 4 15 minute sound checks isn't it? Other than the novelty of having an original press of it I can't imagine why anyone would want it.
I have it, and it is a nice melodic funk/jazz instrumental album. Nothing ground breaking, but very enjoyable. Some very good solos. I play it more than the more traditional Prince albums from that period.
