It's a new(ish) virtual world, still in its infancy. Designed by Linden Labs (the Second Life crowd) it's intended to be a more sophisticated VR environment. It's compatible with VR Goggles (apparently), and although it runs slowly on my machine, it should look awesome on a really good one. At the moment, it's sparsely populated and most people there are tech-oriented types - not cavemen like me who just want to explore the various locations people have built. Even so, it's Linden Labs' attempt, I think, to break away from the weird cul-de-sac of Second Life and make VR a more mainstream thing. They seem to be emphasising the educational and creative aspects of Sansar, as well as the potential for corporations and various institutions to create a 3D presence online. It's coded differently than SL, and still looks comparatively primitive in comparison, but it's not layer upon layer of fixes dating back fifteen years as SL currently is. It seems as if they've spent a fortune on it and seem to be working on a 'Field of Dreams' type of philosophy. They've set up the environment, and they want people to come and create stuff in it. Instead of constantly-running servers supporting imaginary 'land' 24/7, Sansar seems to be based on the idea that each location will only be made operational when someone actually logs into it. This means it takes a bit longer to load, but it also makes it cheaper for them to run. They've also monetised it differently - rather than making money from renting virtual 'land', LL are taking a cut of the profits when creators sell something they've made (objects, avatars, etc). Like a form of sales tax, I suppose. Linden Labs had their thunder stolen despite their early start in the whole 'online social space' area - platforms like Facebook totally drank their milkshake. Maybe Sansar will be the VR platform Gotham needs but doesn't deserve...or something? https://atlas.sansar.com/

Here are some screenshots of me in Sansar, which contains a fair number of geek-related areas already (as you'd expect).

It looks amazing, but the controls are annoying, and since they've started from scratch with completely new code there isn't the comfy functionality that SL has - the viewer 'feels' clunky to use. They're going from the ground up, not building layer upon layer over an existing framework, so it's not as user-friendly. Yet.
I'm sure it'll imrove. It will have to if they intend for it to be a competitor to WordPress (the stated aim of Linden Labs' CEO). They're investing heavily in Sansar, so failure isn't an option. It's early days, and more younger people have grown up with coding now so unlike SL's debut fifteen years ago, there should be more people who are already conversant in this concept ('digital natives' I guess) who will gravitate to it. I hope so, anyway.

I'm deeply troubled by the decay of social trust in Western Civilization, with the decline of institutions, and our natural tendency to look for that sense of community online. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, and connecting across great distances is a time-honored practice. But I sense we are swinging way out of balance -- "coming apart" as a recent book described it -- in ways that are affecting different strata of people differently. I am convinced more than ever that we are a social organism, a type of hybrid "hive-mind" that cannot function properly without the forces of balance that are imposed by social bonds at each level of life.

Whenever something new happens and it's massively different than anything that came before it, people are understandably wary. There were questions asked when novels became popular, when radio became popular, TV, rock 'n roll, etc. You get what I'm saying.
There's no way of knowing whether or not the online environment is good or bad as it's too soon to tell - but I'd never have spoken with anyone reading this if it didn't exist. That in itself makes me inclined to look at it favourably.
Also, like anything else, a thing itself is only as good or bad as the purposes people put it to.

Li'l Jay wrote: To paraphrase Simon: All new developments are positive developments. I'm not saying that all new ideas are universally good ones by virtue of the fact that they're new. I'm saying that all new ideas are going to be questioned, and that this is perfectly understandable. It's also unavoidable and completely justified. If society isn't ready, or is unwary to a certain degree, then there will be a public outcry and legislators (whose jobs depend on being elected) will respond to that outcry. My other point is that it's too early to tell whether or not the online world is a positive development or a negative one in a broader social sense. Only time will tell. In my opinion, the fact that we can have this discussion is proof that online communications are a good thing. That's an opinion, obviously, and not objective fact. And I wasn't saying that Li'l Jay was being anachronistic or anything, just that there have been previous examples of ideas which were looked upon with doubt and suspicion which didn't turn out to be as drastically terrible as some people predicted. I think it's inevitable that bold new ideas will cause concerns and that this is perfectly normal. We'd be idiots not to question things. We're not idiots, though, and I think Sansar is just a branch of the online family tree that will appeal to some people. It may not appeal to others and that's fine as well. I like it and don't see it as harmful, if I did I wouldn't engage with it, I'd avoid it.

Nah.
I think people overreact to the whole online thing, that's all. Real life is still the only place you can get a decent meal and a bed for the night, so I don't think Sansar is going to take over any time soon.

Take over?
The two choices are (1) Take over, and (2) good thing?
You have my reaction.

You won't be laughing when I don my purple and green suit and unleash an army of robots.
Or...perhaps you will be?

It's hard not to laugh along when everybody else is laughing. I mean, these robots in this so-call army are fully equipped with laughter circuits, are they not? So even if they can or cannot feel the emotion that inspires laughter, as they mimic laughter while killing you, at least it will be a funny way to die, and done right, you can die laughing.

https://modemworld.me/2018/07/22/2018-s ... m-roadmap/More incentives to use Sansar from Linden Labs. Without paying a cent you can create up to 20 different 'experiences' (areas, virtual 'lands' if you like). Up until last week it was only three experiences. I haven't even tried to create one as yet. I may never try. I'm enjoying wandering around in the ones other people have built. Mine would be an endless beach, perhaps, with the odd campfire here and there. That's if I could be bothered doing it, which seems unlikely.
